On this date in 1995, Death Row Records released one of the label’s most successful singles featuring Dr. Dre, Tupac Shakur, and Zapp frontman, the late Roger Troutman aptly titled “California Love” from ‘Pac’s All Eyez On Me LP.

As Tupac’s first single as a Death Row artist and as a free man after his 1994 rape conviction, California Love dropped during the height of the East Coast/West Coast rivalry and helped to propel Death Row to the top of the Hip Hop food chain, featuring the game’s hottest rapper and the most sought after producer. The B-side to the Jodeci-powered “How Do U Want It?” posted up in the Billboard pole position for a solid two weeks and ‘Pac was posthumously nominated for Grammys in the Best Rap Solo Performance and Best Rap Performance By a Duo or Group categories.

“Only In Cali where we riot not rally, to live and die/ In L.A., we wearing Chucks, not Ballys(yeah, that’s right)..”

Salute to the late, great Tupac Shakur, Dr. Dre, Suge Knight, the entire Death Row staff, the legend Roger Troutman and everyone involved with this smash single that will forever live in Hip Hop history.

Last year, the late Tupac Amaru Shakur received the biggest honor in entertainment; a star on Hollywood’s coveted Walk of Fame. Better late than never, since Shakur was gunned down 27 years ago in Las Vegas at the apex of his career, but his work still impacts pop culture to this day.

Hosted by L.A. radio personality Big Boy, celebrities and notables spoke at length about Shakur’s list of accolades and achievements such as Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni and Tupac Shakur director Allen Hughes, Pac’s sister Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur, chairman of the board of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Matt Fritch, writer and former Black Panther Party member Jamal Joseph.

“When we talk about that global influence, we think of Tupac Amaru Shakur,” Joseph said. “And yes, that impactful time of the world knowing who Tupac was, was a five- or six-year period. But for everybody who knew Tupac, everybody who was here, we knew he was a star from the time he was a little boy.”

Shakur’s star marks the 2,758th to grace Hollywood Boulevard. While the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce unanimously selected Tupac for star in 2013, it took a decade for it to happen.

Today In Hip Hop History: 2Pac’s Epic Diss Track “Hit ‘Em Up” Dropped 28 Years Ago

Tupac Shakur

On this date in 1996, 2Pac released the first single from his Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory album “Hit ‘Em Up”, aimed at his New York nemesis the Notorious B.I.G., his crew, Junior Mafia and the rest of NYC’s top tier emcees of the era.

Alongside his up and coming crew The Outlawz from New Jersey, Pac went full throttle at the Rotten Apple’s best of the best including Biggie, Lil’ Kim, Mobb Deep and the entire Bad Boy “as a staff, a record label and as a motherfuckin’ crew..” Pac took specific aim at the King Of NY when he boasted, “You claim to be a player, but I fucked your wife…”, which stemmed from the rumor mill which placed Biggie’s wife Faith Evans in a compromising circumstance with her husband’s opps.

Considered one of the best diss tracks of all time, no one from New York responded to Hit ‘Em Up except Mobb Deep, who responded with “Drop A Gem On ‘Em” just months before Tupac Shakur was tragically killed in Las Vegas.

Salue to ‘Pac(RIP), The Outlawz(RIP Khadafi and Fatal Hussein) for making such a pivotal piece of Hip Hop history!

Speaking on Instagram Live over the weekend, Miami Hip Hop pioneer Uncle Luke delved into his unsuccessful efforts to try to broker peace between the Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur before both of their untimely and tragic deaths.

Luke spoke to fans about his failed attempts to bring the two former friends to ther negotiating table for a man-to-man sit-down during their very public rivalry, which ended between the two superstars on September 7, 1996.

“I remember when 2Pac and Biggie had the beef going on. Now, mind you, I tried to get in the middle of it and squash it,” he said. “I kinda cooled it off, but it was a little too late. Outside people got involved.” Luke added, “Man, I remember going to St. Louis doing a show with Biggie. I went on before him and by the time he got to the stage, them people were screaming ‘2Pac.’ They was singing 2Pac songs. That is the most discouraging thing when you in a battle, when you in the heat of a battle on tour, that people would go to the stadium and don’t even wanna hear your songs.”

A South Florida woman whose given name is Tupac Shakur, was arrested yesterday(September 7) for allegedly beating an elderly man with a baseball bat, according to a report from The New York Post.

The 34-year-old woman was charged with aggravated assault on the same date that the original Tupac Shakur was shot in Las Vegas 26 years earlier. The famous Shakur died six days later, succumbing to his injuries.

Shakur is accused of hitting a 65-year-old man with a baseball bat several times as he sat outside of the Hileah Hospital just a day prior. The man suffered injuries to his face, upper lip, right arm, right hand and right leg before he managed to escape to safety inside of the hospital. Police found Shakur, arrested her and took her to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center to be booked..

It’s unsure whether Shakur was born Tupac Amaru Shakur or if she changed her name in commemoration of the late cultural icon.
