Orange Soda

Baby Keem’s breakout smash “ORANGE SODA” arrived on July 16, 2019 as the lead single from his mixtape Die For My Bitch. The self-produced track, co-crafted with Keanu Beats, depicts Keem rhyming about his romantic interest, metaphorically dubbed his “orange soda.” It explores the complexities of their tumultuous relationship, addressing her demands and meddling friends. Despite being a sleeper hit initially, “ORANGE SODA” became Keem’s first Billboard Hot 100 entry in January 2020 at #98. Subsequently, its widespread popularity led to a music video dropping four months after the Baby Keem song’s unveiling. Certified platinum within a year, the fan-favorite cut established Keem’s budding stardom.

Honest

The candid song “HONEST” arrived as the second track off Baby Keem’s 2019 mixtape Die for My Bitch. In his verses, Keem deals with authenticity amidst feelings of isolation and the façade of transactional relationships. Despite confessing infidelity, he questions whether his partner reflects his honesty. Keem’s lyrics hint at his desire for genuine connections. Produced by Sounwave, Keem, and Bēkon, “HONEST” has undoubtedly solidified as one of the rapper’s most-streamed offerings to date. Racking up over 300 million Spotify plays by August 2023, the July 19, 2019 release resonated deeply with fans drawn to its raw vulnerability.

Lost Souls

On The Melodic Blue’s laid-back track “lost souls,” Baby Keem paints a poignant portrait of individuals seduced by celebrity’s allure, disconnected from their authentic selves. His lyrics metaphorically depict these “lost souls” surrounding the narrator. They explicitly prompt Keem’s desire for a genuine connection with someone removed from fame’s trappings. Released September 10, 2021, the Baby Keem song samples Che Ecru’s “Sex A Pill” and went on to receive a remix featuring Brent Faiyaz for the album’s deluxe edition. Ultimately, “lost souls” achieved RIAA gold certification on June 7, 2022.

Family Ties” Ft. Kendrick Lamar

The highly-anticipated collaboration “Family Ties” marked a seminal moment for real-life cousins Baby Keem and Kendrick Lamar. Released in August 2021, the anthem served as the fourth single from Keem’s debut album. It was also Lamar’s first offering under his pgLang imprint after a hiatus. With its nostalgic cover art paying homage to Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city, clever lyrics showcasing Lamar’s newly-unveiled “Oklama” persona, and an award-winning music video, “Family Ties” celebrated their unbreakable brotherhood. The Baby Keem song’s widespread acclaim, including Grammy and BET triumphs, cemented its lasting impact.

Durag Activity” Ft. Travis Scott

Baby Keem revealed the lead single “durag activity” from his debut album The Melodic Blue on April 30, 2021. He recruited Travis Scott for his first featured collaboration. The hard-hitting track, produced by Brick!, finds the rappers exuding self-assured bravado. They trade bars about their lavish lifestyles, wealth, and romantic pursuits over a snapping, distorted beat. The song’s title nods to the durag representing their cultural swagger.

Upon release, it sparked a playful Twitter exchange when Madonna evidently donned a bandana printed with the song’s name. Keem was prompted to cheekily offer to send her an actual durag. Preceded by teasers in March, the song made waves with an accompanying music video. By merging raw charisma into slick lyricism, “durag activity” announced Keem’s arrival as rap’s latest prominent voice, strengthened further by Scott’s star power.

Trademark USA

Kicking off The Melodic Blue, the opening track “trademark usa” (originally titled “llc the dead” in early album tracklists) immediately immerses listeners into Baby Keem’s distinctive soundscape. With hype building after being teased during his “ORANGE SODA” video, the song’s production basically flips a reversed gospel sample over sparse instrumentation, allowing Keem’s introspective bars to shine. His candid lyrics delve into his meteoric rise, family sacrifices, and naysayers-turned-supporters. It’s all wrapped in an enigmatic title that hints at Keem’s artistic identity and American roots. Moreover, as an album opener, “trademark usa” highlights the depth of Baby Keem’s songs. It establishes him as a bold new voice not afraid to reveal a vulnerable side amid his unconventional sonic capabilities.

16

The poignant closing track “16” on Baby Keem’s debut album The Melodic Blue explores issues of self-worth and upbringing while poetically exploring the dynamics of a relationship. Teased months prior through merch and early tracklists, the song’s titular number reflects its sequential placement. Keem’s introspective lyrics read like an open dialogue, further empathizing with a lover’s hidden struggles stemming from an impoverished background. He urges this unidentified partner to appreciate their inherent value above materialistic concerns. The refrain “Just appreciate yourself” emphasizes self-acceptance over external validation. “16” provides a nuanced look at how one’s origins can influence identity and emotions. He concludes his acclaimed debut with a piece that highlights its rich themes.

Baby Keem Shares “Melodic Blue” Short Film Featuring Three New Songs

Baby Keem is getting a lot of mileage out of his breakthrough album The Melodic Blue. The album originally dropped in 2021 and was met with substantial critical acclaim. Among the original 16 tracks are some major hits for Keem including “16,” “trademark usa,” and “family ties” with Kendrick Lamar. A year later in 2022 Keem shared a deluxe edition of the album which featured 10 new tracks. Among them was yet another hit song, the track “lost souls” with Brent Faiyaz.

It explains the short seeks to “take you through Keem’s internal battle and leads you through fragments of memory and temptation as he navigates the depths of The Melodic Blue.” The film also debuts three new songs likely from the same era as the rest of The Melodic Blue. Those tracks include “Rock Me,” “Torch,” and “White Laces” which features guest vocals from James Blake. The film was shared on Prime Video overnight. Check out the trailer released last week below.

Baby Keem’s New Short Film

Keem hasn’t announced if the newly released songs will be on streaming platforms any time soon but fans have been anticipating new music all year. That hasn’t been helped by Keem’s repeated teasing of new music and sometimes even promising an entire new album. Earlier this year he teamed up with Kendrick Lamar for the third time and the pair shared the song “The Hillbillies.”

Last month, Kendrick and Keem headlined Tyler, The Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw festival together. They performed as The Hillbillies and also made the live debut performance of the track together. Prime Video Trailer: Kendrick Lamar Executive Produces ‘The Melodic Blue’ Starring Baby Keem and Amandla Stenberg

The Melodic Blue

The trailer for The Melodic Blue is here, and Baby Keem is teaming up with Amanda Stenberg (The Hunger Games) in the Prime Video film, executive produced by Kendrick Lamar.

The Melodic Blue is directed by Savannah Setten, who was also behind the camera for Keem’s music video for “No Sense.” Unsurprisingly, the film shares the exact title of Keem’s 2021 debut album. The visual aesthetics are elaborate, and the story feels immersed in an exciting world with Keem playing opposite Stenberg as his love interest.

The Melodic Blue also stars Ja’nai Paye (House Party), Francis Lovehall (Masters of the Air), and Séréna Sy. The film’s trailer, which feels like a cinematic music visual, is the brainchild of the collective pgLang Kendrick Lamar and Dave Free founded.

The official Prime Video logline reads as: “Keem’s internal battle leads us through fragments of memory and temptation as he navigates the depths of The Melodic Blue.”

Jamie Rabineau and Cornell Brown produce the Melodic Blue, and Free is executive producer.

The Melodic Blue hits Prime Video on Dec. 5.

Baby Keem‘s debut album The Melodic Blue continues to stand the test of time. Though it was released back in 2021, the PGLang signee just announced a hotly-anticipated companion project for the album. This week, Keem will drop a film called The Melodic Blue to accompany his critically-acclaimed album. He first showed the trailer at Camp Flog Gnaw earlier this month, but today (November 28), Keem dropped the trailer online.

With so many music-related films arriving on different formats this winter, fans are excited to tune in for this one.

Baby Keem Goes To A Place Where ‘You Feel More’ In His Eerie ‘Melodic Blue’ Trailer

In the trailer for Baby Keem’s film, The Melodic Blue, the title is given to a mysterious location described as “a place where all human sensitivities are heightened.” The trailer gets very abstract in a hurry, depicting some of the feverish, surreal imagery we’ve come to expect from the PgLang crew, as well as other Amazon Prime Video productions like Swarm.

Keem initially shared the trailer at Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival ahead of his and Kendrick Lamar’s headlining performance at the festival. The film’s premise was later described in a press release: “Keem’s internal battle leads us through fragments of memory and temptation as he navigates the depths of The Melodic Blue,” it said.

The film, of course, borrows its title from the California-born, Las Vegas-raised rapper’s 2021 debut album. Since its release, Keem released a deluxe edition the next year, then teamed up with his cousin Kendrick to drop a single called “The Hillbillies.” Later, they teamed up as a duo — also named The Hillbillies — to headline Flog Gnaw, where the festival’s founder Tyler The Creator came out to join them during their performance.

Baby Keem Shares Trailer For “The Melodic Blue” Short Film

Baby Keem’s breakthrough album The Melodic Blue dropped back in 2021. The project rode in on a wave of hype off high-profile collaborations with artists like Kendrick Lamar and Travis Scott and received positive reviews from critics. The album was a massive success spawning even more hits like “16” and “trademark usa.” But Keem isn’t done with the album and era yet. Earlier today he announced a new short film based on the album.

While the trailer doesn’t reveal a ton about the plot and direction of the film, it does feature some enticing imagery and writing. In the trailer, the “melodic blue” is described as a place where all human emotions and feelings are heightened. It also features Keem himself in a series of dark and flashy sets alongside numerous other actors and actresses. The announcement also reveals when fans will be able to see the film in its entirety. It’s expected to arrive next week on January 5. Check out the trailer he shared below.

Baby Keem’s Short Film On The Way

The announcement of the short film came as a surprise to many fans who assumed that Keem’s next undertaking would be a new album. He gave fans reason to suspect that at the end of a performance at Osheaga Music Festival earlier this year. “New album coming soon motherf*ckers,” Keem said to the crowd as he closed his set.

Earlier this year Keem released his third collaboration with Kendrick Lamar, a new single called “The Hillbillies.” The two did a joint headlining performance at Tyler, The Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw festival earlier this month. They performed under the joint name “The Hillbillies” and made the live debut of the single during the hyped headlining set. What do you think of the trailer for Baby Keem’s new short film? The Hillbillies, more or less an alter-ego duo of cousins Baby Keem and Kendrick Lamar, headlined Tyler, The Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival last weekend. Before their set, a mysterious trailer played on the stage’s screen for what we now know to be Baby Keem’s forthcoming The Melodic Blue visual. This morning, November 16, a press release confirmed that The Melodic Blue will be available to globally stream on Amazon Prime Video on December 5.

“Keem’s internal battle leads us through fragments of memory and temptation as he navigates the depths of The Melodic Blue,” the press release teased.

The Melodic Blue first arrived as Baby Keem’s major-label debut album in September 2021, which Uproxx’s Wongo Okon reviewed as “Baby Keem’s attempt to balance his individuality with a reduced dose of his trademarked chaotic energy.” Keem dropped a deluxe version in October 2022.

According to the press release, The Melodic Blue visual was directed by Savannah Setten. It stars acclaimed actress Amandla Stenberg opposite Keem, Shakira Ja’nai Paye, Francis Lovehall, and Séréna Sy. The visual presented by Eerie Times, pgLang, and Amazon Music was co-executive produced Keem, Kendrick Lamar, and Dave Free. Jamie Rabineau and Cornell Brown are also credited producers.

In September 2021, Baby Keem released his major-label debut album, The Melodic Blue. A deluxe version followed in October 2022. And Keem still isn’t finished with The Melodic Blue, as an accompanying visual was announced today (November 16).

As per a press release, The Melodic Blue visual will be presented by Eerie Times, pgLang, and Amazon Music to stream globally on Amazon Prime Video on December 5. Information is sparse, other than the fact that it stars acclaimed actress Amandla Stenberg. “Keem’s internal battle leads us through fragments of memory and temptation as he navigates the depths of The Melodic Blue,” the press release teases.

Last Saturday, November 11, The Hillbillies — comprised of Baby Keem and Kendrick Lamar — headlined Tyler The Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival (newly labeled “The Best Festival In America” by Uproxx’s Aaron Williams and Philip Cosores). Before the set’s start, a trailer for Keem’s The Melodic Blue visual played.

Someone in attendance captured the trailer on video, later circulating on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Along with Stenberg, the Savannah Setten-directed visual will co-star Baby Keem, Shakira Janai Paye, Francis Lovehall, and Séréna Sy. The press release confirms that it was co-executive produced by Keem, Kendrick Lamar, and Dave Free. Jamie Rabineau and Cornell Brown are also credited producers.

Baby Keem’s “Scars” Shows Why He Is One Of The Most Exciting Artists Of The Decade

Back in 2021, there were plenty of fantastic records that were drawing heavy album-of-the-year consideration. But, one that you have to include on that list is Baby Keem’s, The Melodic Blue. It is crazy to think that this project is already two years old. Sometimes, albums can grow stale in a short time after their release. However, with all of the various sounds and instrumentals that Keem attacks here, it is still holding its value to this day.

There are tons of outstanding tracks across this 16-track LP. The opening cut, “trademark usa” is a fan-favorite. The drone-like beat in the first half is very unique and Keem’s lyrics cover a wide range of topics such as artists not taking risks in their music. That is all the California rapper does on The Melodic Blue. Other examples of this include the glitchy pop track “16” which is a beautiful closer to an ever-changing tracklist. Another cut here that is a stunner is “scars.”

Listen To “Scars” Off The Melodic Blue From Baby Keem

This song draws a lot of inspiration from Kanye West’s massively influential 2008 record, 808s & Heartbreak. Specifically, it samples the hit “Love Lockdown” which is very light on the instrumentation. “Scars” is also minimal but takes a different lyrical approach. Keem is passionately singing and rapping about how the toughest decisions in his life are messing with his mental fortitude. The multi-talent put out an impressive deluxe version in October 2022. Most of those songs really could have shown up on the original, which shows how much potential Keem still has left to tap into.

What were your initial thoughts on The Melodic Blue from Baby Keem? Was this one of the best albums of the last few years? Is he one of the most exciting artists in hip-hop today?
