On this date in 1990, original Hit Squad member K-Solo dropped his debut album, Tell The World My Name, on Atlantic Records.

Produced primarily by PMD(Parrish Smith) of EPMD, Tell The World My Name was the launch of Solo’s hardcore delivery, which was his calling card on his introduction into the music biz on EPMD’s “Knick Knack Paddy Wack” off their Unfinished Business album. Solo’s signature spell-out style along with his uncanny storytelling abilities made his first album one of the tope drops of 1990.

Tracks that led the album’s momentum includes the alphabetic “Spellbound”, his prison to the booth saga on “Fugitive” and the timeless “Your Moms In My Business”, which was a catchphrase in teenage love situations of that era.

Salute to K-Solo, EPMD, DJ Scratch and even Al B.Sure for their contributions to this integral piece of Hip Hop history!

On this date in 1992, the Brooklyn/Teaneck, New Jersey duo Das EFX dropped their game changing single “They Want EFX” on East West Records.

When Krazy Drazy and Skood dropped their signature, off beat, stuttering style, am entire wave of rappers with an identical or similar style emerged in Hip Hop during the early 90s. With samples from “Buffalo Gals” by Malcolm McLaren, “Blind Man Can See It” by James Brown and “Breath Control II by Boogie Down Productions. They Want EFX was the blueprint for many of those who came after them. Their usage of famous TV commercials and slogans distinguished DAS’ style from the others, but later proved that they can switch their stutter to a consistent cadence and still keep up with their peers.

The lead single from the group’s debut album Dead Serious did numbers commercially as well appearing at number 25 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 and even reached the pole position for Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs in ’92.

On this date in 1994, Parrish “PMD” Smith of the legendary Long Island rap duo EPMD released his first solo album after his split from Erick Sermon entitled Shadē Business under the RCA Records umbrella.

This LP received less than its fair share of fanfare, peaking at number 42 on the Billboard 200 with no “crossover” single, ironically a term coined by EPMD just two years earlier on their last album together. Even with solid, exclusive production from EPMD’s own DJ Scratch, Shadē Business’ Zoneside vs. Darkside concept did not grab the ears of Hip Hop fans who were due to hear another “Business” album from the “brothers from Brentwood, Long Island”.

The 14-track album featured the likes of DJ Mark the 45 King, Jesse West and the Hit Squad’s most recent signees at the time, Das EFX.

Salute to PMD, Scratch, Das EFX and the rest of the Hit Squad for this piece of Hip Hop History!
