What Is The JID ‘Surround Sound Challenge’ On TikTok?

One of last year’s standout rap albums was JID’s The Forever Story. Fueled by singles like “Surround Sound,” “Dance Now,” and “Kody Blu 31,” the album was a critical and fan favorite and commercial success for the Atlanta rapper, peaking at No. 12 on the Billboard 200 — his best-performing album to date.

This year, though, The Forever Story is receiving renewed attention, thanks in large part to the “Surround Sound Challenge” on TikTok set to the song. So, just what is the Surround Sound Challenge?

Its alternate name, the Ceiling Challenge, offers a hint: Users have been taping their phones to the ceilings of their homes, classrooms, offices, and even retail establishments in order to get a top-down view as they dance to the beat of JID’s hyperactive single. The team at Dreamville shared some of their favorite examples on the label’s TikTok account:

Meanwhile, the label’s president, Ib, noted the song’s recent streaming resurgence as a result of its TikTok popularity, joking on Twitter (never X), “Crazy. Great music never dies it just needs a little tik tok.”

He ain’t wrong. TikTok has increasingly become the launching pad for older or overlooked singles, juicing the stats for tracks like Flyana Boss‘ “You Wish” and Tyla’s “Water,” taking them from relative unknowns to charting major label artists.

J.I.D, 21 Savage, And Baby Tate’s “Surround Sound” Goes Platinum

J.I.D’s 2022 The Forever Story track “Surround Sound,” featuring 21 Savage and Baby Tate, is certified platinum. The single was released in January of last year, and uses a sample of Aretha Franklin’s “One Step Ahead.” The song’s official music video also currently has over 30 million views on YouTube.

In March, J.I.D discussed the critically-acclaimed album that the track is a part of. He told People that the album saw him digging up past wounds, making it tough for him to consistently perform it live. “This project, it’s helping open up the door for the rest of the stuff I’m going to be doing,” he told the outlet. “So I like how intentional it was. And it was so serious, to the point like I have to have fun on the next one.”

The Success Of “Surround Sound”

“I was a little stressed,” J.I.D continued, I was going through emotional s**t, I was digging up old traumas. I was dialing backwards. It’s hard to perform it every night, you know what I’m saying? I’m ready for the next album cycle. The [setlist] stretch from ‘Sistanem’ to ‘Kody Blu 31,’ I’m cooked. And then ‘Workin Out,’ I’m cooked. Yeah, I’m an emotional wreck at that point.”

Earlier this year, J.I.D also shared his thoughts on the current state of hip hop. “I got a weird theory about how music is right now. In the blog era with those superstars like Drake. They came up in the blog era, and they came up in a time [when] you ain’t see anybody rapping like that,” he told the Throwing Fits podcast in March, “They weren’t like, it wasn’t too much—it was a first-time thing. Now, it’s so much of fast food and microwave. Everything is really quick. So, it’s not really like, rap.” He went on to explain that he feels as though many rappers these days care more about virality than the quality of the work they put out. “People don’t really care about it as much,” J.I.D claimed.

JID Drops New Video For “Surround Sound”

JID

J.I.D. is making his musical comeback with the release of a video for his single “Surround Sound.” The visual shows the usually reserved J.I.D. rapping and chopping it up with his fellow Georgia natives, 21 Savage and Baby Tate. The Dreamville rapper recently announced that he will be performing at the Coachella Festival.

JID, 21 Savage, And Baby Tate Fire Shots Louder Than ‘Surround Sound’ On Their Hard-Hitting Collaboration

JID has spent the past two years working on his upcoming album, The Forever Story. He seemed ready to release it in 2020, but uncertainty behind sharing a project during a pandemic caused the rapper to hold off on its release as he revealed during a string of tweets that year. “I’m tryna line it up perfect cuz it’s hard to create in uncertain times,” he wrote. The following year, he teased the project once again by sharing in-studio shots with collaborators like 6lack, Buddy, Denzel Curry, Rico Nasty, and Smino. This year, it seems like the cards have fallen in the right place for the arrival of The Forever Story.

JID kicks off his 2022 campaign with his brand new single, “Surround Sound.” The track features contributions from 21 Savage and Baby Tate for what amounts to a hard-hitting release. JID leads the way with a quickfire verse that sits perfectly over the song’s thumping production. 21 Savage checks in for a menacing verse and Baby Tate closes out the first half of the song with fluttering vocals to bring those to an end. JID then returns to lay another cut-throat to conclude his grand return. The single also arrives with a matching video that captures JID, 21 Savage, and Baby Tate out on the prowl for some late-night fun.

For what it’s worth, JID hasn’t left us high and dry with music since his 2018 sophomore album DiCaprio 2. He delivered multiple verses on Dreamville’s Revenge Of The Dreamers III and Spillage Village’s Spilligion. He also delivered guest verses for Khalid, Imagine Dragons, Lute, Masego, Doja Cat, Conway The Machine, and more.

You can listen to “Surround Sound” in the video above.
