Shawn Kemp Pleads Not Guilty In Shooting Case

Last month, former NBA star Shawn Kemp was charged with first-degree assault after firing a handgun outside a mall in Tacoma, Washington. The charges reportedly stemmed from a video showing the incident, which occurred in March 2023. At the time of the charges, Kemp’s attorney indicated that he would plead not guilty. Kemp had been arrested at the time of the incident but was released without being charged. The charges came over a month later.

“Today, Shawn Kemp learned that the Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office elected to file charges against him,” attorney Scott Boatman, “He will be entering a plea of not guilty at his upcoming arraignment. Kemp has been fully cooperative with the police and the prosecutor’s office throughout this process. He is confident that once the jury hears from the witnesses and sees the evidence at trial, they will conclude that he was justified in defending himself that afternoon. He has retained the law offices of Aaron Kiviat and Tim Leary to defend these charges.”

Kemp Files Not Guilty Plea

On May 4, Kemp officially filed a plea of not guilty at Pierce County Courthouse. He would remain free on the charge of first-degree murder, with the conditions that he surrender any firearms and not attempt to contact the alleged victims. However, Kempt has maintained throughout these proceedings that he was acting in self-defense at the time of the shooting. Kemp will return to court next month for a second hearing on the charge. Kemp did not speak to the media upon leaving the courthouse with his attorney. It is not the first time Kemp has faced legal trouble. He was arrested twice on possession charges in 2005 and 2006.

Kemp spent 14 seasons in the NBA, mostly with the Seattle SuperSonics. A six-time all-star, Kemp retired in 2003 after a single-season stint with the Orlando Magic. Aside from the SuperSonics and Magic, Kemp also spent time with the Cavaliers and Trail Blazers. Additionally, he attempted a comeback for several years, but to no avail. Furthermore, He now owns several businesses in the Seattle area. The most famous of his ventures is a dispensary called Shawn Kemp’s Cannabis.

Shawn Kemp Charged For Firing Gun Outside Of Mall

Shawn Kemp recently made headlines after a video seemed to show the NBA legend firing a weapon outside of his vehicle. The alleged incident happened outside of a Tacoma, Washington, shopping mall. Kemp is now being charged with assault in the first degree over the incident in March. However, NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski obtained a statement from Kemp’s lawyer Scott Boatman, saying Kemp will plea not guilty.

The incident took place on March 9th of this year. In a report by TMZ stated that witnesses told police that Kemp fired around 5 to 10 shots during the incident. Shawn Kemp Released From Jail, Avoids Charges

Yesterday, former Seattle Supersonics superstar Shawn Kemp stole all of the headlines. Overall, this was due to a report that he had been involved in a drive-by shooting in Tacoma, Washington. This was a truly shocking report as it didn’t seem like something he was capable of. Subsequently, more details began to roll in, which ultimately painted a clearer picture for fans. According to ESPN, Kemp had stuff stolen from him on Tuesday. The following day, he went to get his goods back, however, someone allegedly opened fire on him. Since yesterday, Kemp has been released from jail, according to ESPN. The Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office has made it clear that no charges have been filed. The news about Shawn Kemp has earned a reaction from just about everyone, including 50 Cent. Following Kemp’s Wednesday night arrest and the footage that emerged afterward, the Internet erupted with opinions, memes, and general reactions. However, 50 Cent’s response to the arrest of Shawn Kemp was less humorous. The Power EP shared a headline surrounding Kemp’s felony arrest, urging people not to jump to conclusions. “I don’t know what’s going on here, but don’t judge this brother till all the facts come out,” 50 Cent wrote on Instagram.

Police booked Shawn Kemp on Wednesday afternoon around 2 p.m. after reports of gunfire at the Tacoma Mall. The former Sonics player was taken into the Pierce County jail on a felony drive-by charge and no bail has been set yet. Police said they responded to a call after gunshots were fired between the occupants of two different vehicles. They said one individual, who they initially described as a 53-year-old, fired shots at the other vehicle before the alleged victims fled the scene. Police also recovered a gun on the scene.

Around the time of his arrest, footage of the altercation emerged online. A man in a red jacket appears to be arguing with a man in the video.
