Eminem Did Not Diss Jay-Z On New Song “Tobey” According To Royce Da 5’9″

Eminem’s new song “Tobey” featuring BabyTron and Big Sean caused quite the commotion this week, building up hype for The Death Of Slim Shady and turning over detractors of the last single, “Houdini.” However, one particular set of bars had some fans thinking that Marshall Mathers was aiming for Jay-Z’s neck. “Ain’t feelin’ your top five favorite rappers / So I know they about to be pissed at me / But this, to me, is a mystery / How rappers I’ve already ripped could be higher up on a list than me?” he raps on the cut. Billboard and VIBE ranked Em as the fifth best MC of all time in their list of the 50 best rappers last year to celebrate 50 years of hip-hop history around the five-decade anniversary of the art form and culture’s inception.

Hov landed at number one, followed by Kendrick Lamar at two, Nas at three, and Tupac Shakur at four. Given all this, many interpreted Eminem’s lyrics as a possible Jay-Z diss, but according to Royce Da 5’9″‘s response to a curious commenter on Instagram, that’s all cap. “You not gonna answer this but…. They saying Em was throwing a shot at Jay in that Tobey joint. Is that true??” the fan asked. “Of course not,” Royce responded concerning his Bad Meets Evil partner, and we all know that Slim Shady has no qualms about rap beef.

Royce Da 5’9″ Dismisses Rumors That Eminem Dissed Jay-Z

As such, maybe these lyrics are combative, or maybe fans are just reaching here. Either way, it’s hard not to think of Eminem and Jay-Z’s collab “Renegade,” on which Nas famously said that Em “murdered” the Roc Nation boss during his beef with Jay. Perhaps this is what the Detroit spitter referred to with “ripping” other rappers. Either way, we might never know for sure.

Meanwhile, it looks like there are even rappers in Eminem’s city who might take issue with this GOAT stance. “Numbers wise, Eminem is the best Detroit rapper but the gag is nobody would say that in Detroit,” Skilla Baby recently posited. “Everybody had a turn being Detroit’s favorite rapper. Numbers wise, it’s Eminem but nobody in Detroit is playing Eminem right now and I was an Eminem fan as a kid. I’m a fan of Eminem but do we consider him our best rapper? I don’t think Detroit does.”

Royce Da 5’9″ Reveals Grudge Over Kanye West & Big Sean Upstaging Slaughterhouse

During a recent appearance on The Joe Budden Podcast, Royce Da 5’9″ spoke to its titular host about their rap group Slaughterhouse’s time at SXSW in 2012. They performed for S.O.B.’s 30th anniversary party and were the last show of the night with a lineup that also included 2 Chainz, Machine Gun Kelly, and Big Sean. The latter, Royce’s fellow Detroit MC, brought out Ye to perform “Can’t Tell Me Nothing,” and the crowd went ballistic. Now, Joe and his Slaughterhouse partner recalled how they felt when the G.O.O.D. Music duo (at the time) upstaged them and killed a lot of hype for their performance with something grander that came right before in the form of the Chicago artist.

“I’m still mad at [Ye] about that,” Royce Da 5’9″ shared on the podcast, although not in an overtly serious or combative tone. Him and Joe Budden got around to talking about it when the latter brought it up, and Budden even joked about still having nightmares about it. “I’m mad at Big Sean too,” the podcast’s special guest continued. “He’s the one who brought him out. He was on stage. He f***ing showed me, I’ll tell you that.” For what it’s worth, neither artist seems to hold any true animosity for the Yeezy mogul.

Royce Da 5’9″ Appears On The Joe Budden Podcast: Watch

Their conversation around Big Sean, Ye, and SXSW begins at the two-hour, 14-minute, and 30-second mark (2:14:30).

“Big Sean was up at SXSW, Slaughterhouse was closing… Why?!” Joe Budden told Royce Da 5’9”. “Man, we back there doing our little Slaughterhouse chant. ‘All hands in the middle! Slaughterhouse on three! One, two, three!’ Then from the stage, [we heard], ‘La, la, la, la, wait ’til I get my money right.’ Everybody’s like, ‘Ahhh!’ I said, ‘Give me my hand! I ain’t f***ing with y’all! Y’all cr*zy as hell!’ By the time we went up there, it ain’t look like the same crowd. I was tight.”

To be clear, though, the Bad Meets Evil member isn’t really mad at the Sean Don; they’ve collaborated a lot and have shown each other a lot of respect over the years. “Royce Da 5’9 is a literal big brother, so I gotta go with Royce,” “The Baddest” MC said of his fellow spitter on Drink Champs, picking him over another Detroit legend in Eminem. “Eminem is, like I said, a god MC and a dream come true to work with, but I’ve been in the trenches with Royce for real.” For more news on Royce Da 5’9″, Joe Budden, Big Sean, and Kanye West, stay logged into HNHH.

Royce Da 5’9″ Sends Shots At Lupe Fiasco On New Song

These days, rap beef can feel more personal and combative due to social media and the fact that MCs are finding any and every reason to compete or call each other out. While this is never a good thing, it’s always been a part of hip-hop, and can actually be an entertaining, relevant, and legitimately useful tool in competition, displays of skill, and bettering each other. That is, as long as it’s about the rapping, not about the drama. One of the best current examples of that is the feud between Royce Da 5’9″ and Lupe Fiasco, former podcast co-hosts turned lyrical opponents. On his new song with KXNG Crooked and Benzhan, “Never the Same,” the former seemed to re-spark this fire.

“I’m not here to bury the hatch, it’s just I don’t care to relax,” Royce Da 5’9″ rapped on the cut. “I don’t think that Lupe’s who I should spit my disparity at, I don’t think Mickey Factz is who I should give a charity match.” It’s not a hard diss and might even be interpreted as a peace offering, but the first line paints it in a very particular context. For those unaware, he and Lupe Fiasco started beefing after some light lyrical exchanges as podcast co-hosts on The Lupe & Royce Show. However, when they scrapped the show after getting more serious about their disses, it was clear that they set their sights on dominating each other through their pen.

Lupe Fiasco Gets Shots On New Royce Da 5’9″ Verse: Listen

“You forgot the dude who about the Chi whose was locked inside,” Royce Da 5’9″ rapped on “Silence of the Lambda,” referencing Charles “Chilly” Patton, the Chicago rapper’s longtime manager who’s been behind bars for a while. “Without him, you’d be dead, probably dread standing beside you, fed salmon and lied to, while the red camera disguise you. You violent but where was that for the Craig Kallmans and Kysers?” On the other hand, this is what Lupe Fiasco had for Royce on “Steve Jobs.” “Listening to your track record, I could see you were skipping classics, I did it on my first one and delivered to the masses. Your songs are unmemorable, your verses are impenetrable, I ain’t even listen to that diss record, I only f**k with you ’cause of your interviews.”

Meanwhile, some time after the Detroit MC called Lupe a “b***h” on IG Live, he slightly backtracked. “Do I regret it?” he pondered on The Breakfast Club. “I don’t know if ‘regret’ is the right word, but I’m not happy about saying that, ’cause I don’t think he’s a b***h. I don’t think we should speak to each other that way, but I do understand why I said it, ’cause it was just a reaction. It was a point that [things pushed me] to, and I feel like I gave a lot of warning points. I gave a lot of lead into it, and that’s me knowing myself.” For the record, Royce still likes Lupe on a personal level despite not speaking since their podcast, so this seems like a purely artistic duel.
