Jonathan Majors Admits He’s “Heartbroken” After Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom Reveal

Over the weekend, it was revealed that Robert Downey Jr. will be making his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in two upcoming films, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. He announced his role as Doctor Doom at San Diego Comic-Con on July 27, and the moment later went viral on social media. In footage from the event, he dramatically rips off his mask, then the crowd unsurprisingly goes wild.

Of course, fans are looking forward to seeing RDJ’s comeback, though the announcement also reignited conversation around Jonathan Majors. Majors previously played Kang, and was set to reprise the role in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, which was announced a couple of years ago. Late last year, however, he was found guilty of assaulting his ex Grace Jabbari. Marvel cut ties with the actor as a result.

The announcement left fans to speculate about how bummed Majors must have been over the news, which he confirmed during a recent chat with TMZ. As expected, he is, as he grew fond of his iconic character. “Yeah, heartbroken,” he explained. “Come on, yeah, of course. I love him. I love Kang.” They went on to ask Majors if he’d ever be interested in playing Kang again in the future. According to him, he’d be in if that’s what fans and Marvel Studios want.

“Hell yeah. … If that’s what the fans want, if that’s what Marvel wants, let’s roll,” Majors confirmed. Robert Downey Jr. To Star As Doctor Doom In Upcoming Avengers Films

Since then, however, Majors has been found guilty of assaulting his ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari. As a result, Marvel cut ties with the actor in December. Now, Majors is trending on X as users react to the announcement, and consider how he must be feeling right now. Many are also looking back on the time Majors told Lifehacker Australia that he’d love to share the big screen with RDJ.

“I would love to be across from him on screen to see how our philosophies, acting-wise and character-wise, just personally, match up,” he said in 2023. “You know, I find him to be such a fascinating artist, which is why Iron Man is so fascinating. His portrayal of Iron Man is so fascinating and he represents a very clear worldview and energy of the Avengers. And I think Kang represents a different era.”

Robert Downey Jr.’s MCU Fate Revealed

Marvel has confirmed that Robert Downey Jr. will not be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Vice President of Production and Development at Marvel Studios, Stephen Broussard, says Iron Man options “aren’t on the table.” As can be seen, Iron Man died in Marvel’s most successful film yet, Avengers: Endgame. Furthermore, He sacrificed himself to save the world. His funeral topped off the emotional scenes of his final moments. However, Broussard says that, since then, the MCU is now in a huge transition period. Now, they’re moving away from the Avengers narrative and Phase Five will connect everything released in Phase Four.

Specifically, Broussard told io9, “I think one of the meta-narratives of Phase Four was about new characters. It was about new people stepping into mantles. If you look at, like, Cassie [Lang in Quantumania] getting a suit and Kate Bishop [in Hawkeye], new characters being introduced like Jack in Werewolf by Night. After these first 10 years of Marvel storytelling, torches are being passed, like with Robert Downey Jr. no longer being [on the] table and stuff like that. So, it was kind of like a new generation stepping to the forefront which, again, has always happened in the comics.”

Additionally, This news comes with the announcement that Harrison Ford is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ford has appeared in some of the biggest film franchises in the world– from Star Wars to Indiana Jones. Rightfully, there are high expectations for him in the MCU. He will replace William Hurt, who passed away in March at the age of 71. Hurt played Thaddeus E ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross in the MCU. Ford will now play the character.

Fans have already seen his character, Thunderbolt, in The Incredible Hulk, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Black Widow. Furthermore, in the fifth phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sebastian Stan and Florence Pugh will star a stand-alone Thunderbolts film. The film is set to follow a group of supervillains who are recruited to go on missions for the government. Additionally, Ford has also signed a deal with Marvel to appear in Captain America: New World Order, as well.
