Rihanna Says Her Next Album Is ‘Completely Different’: ‘You’re Not Going To Expect What You Hear’

In news that Rihanna fans are painfully aware of at this point, this singer’s most recent album is 2016’s Anti, which was released nearly six years ago now. In the years since, Rihanna has periodically offered statements on either when she expects to release the album or what her upcoming music is sounding like. Her latest dispatch on this front falls in the latter category, as she’s teasing an experimental new project.

In an interview with the Associated Press (on the red carpet of her latest Savage X Fenty fashion show), Rihanna said:

“You’re not going to expect what you hear. Just put that in your mind. Whatever you know of Rihanna is not going to be what you hear. I’m really experimenting. Music is like fashion: you should be able to play. I should be able to wear whatever I want, and I treat music the same way. So, I’m having fun and it’s going to be completely different. That’s it.”

This expands upon what she noted at the end of 2020 when she said, “2021 is a little unknown for everybody and nobody is sure what restrictions there are going to be. My creativity is within my control, though, and I want to take my music and my brands to a different level.”

Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty Vol. 3 Fashion Show Trailer Previews Skyline Views And A Star-Studded Cast

When Rihanna put on her first Savage X Fenty fashion show in 2018, it was clear she intended to revolutionize the industry. Rather than simply sending models down the runway in her lingerie garments, Rihanna tapped celebrities and famous models to showcase their outfits in a cinematic and size-inclusive show complete with live music and choreography. This year, Rihanna is once again inviting a number of today’s top stars to join her for her third Savage X Fenty fashion show.

The singer just dropped an exciting trailer for Savage X Fenty Vol. 3, previewing how the runway show will take over an entire building. Along with previously announced performances by Normani, Daddy Yankee, and Nas, Rihanna has invited musicians like Troye Sivan, Erykah Badu, Sabrina Carpenter, and Jazmine Sullivan to make a cameo in the performance. The entire show will be available to stream starting on September 24 exclusively on Amazon’s Prime Video.

According to an official press release, Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty 2021 lingerie collection fashion show are meant to exude “baddie energy” by incorporating “strong lines that trace contours of the body and unconventional silhouettes that push the boundaries of individuality to bring out the baddie in everybody.”

The second, titled Vol. 2, was filmed over a few days in September 2020 in an empty Los Angeles Convention Center. “Being in lockdown, all you have is really yourself — your mind, your own thoughts, your imagination — and it forces a lot of creative out of a lot of people,” Rih told The New York Times last year about prepping a pandemic fashion show. “You come up with incredible material because you’re forced to be with yourself.”

Lizzo Picked The Best Artists In R&B, Pop, And More, But She Intentionally Skipped Hip-Hop

If there is one thing that will never change about music, it’s that people will spend non-trivial amounts of time ranking the best artists, albums, and songs and then debating those rankings. It seems like every other day, somebody makes headlines because they ranked the best rappers or the best artists in another style. Now Lizzo has decided to enter the conversation, doing so by declaring the “king,” “queen,” “prince,” and “princess” of various genres.

She began by declaring in a tweet that Usher is the “king of R&B,” and from there, she decided to hand out similar superlatives in subsequent tweets. Her picks include Beyonce, Justin Bieber, Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, and others:

“King of Pop- Michael Jackson
Queen of Pop- Janet Jackson
Prince of pop- Bieber
Princess of Pop- Britney Spears
The Pop princess- Rihanna
Queen of music- Beyonce
Queen of soul- Aretha
Queen of R&B- Mariah
Queen of hip hop soul- Mary J
Queen of rock & roll- Tina Turner.”

Notably, she didn’t touch on rap. She responded to a fan asking why she did that, writing, “Pop is easier to speak on rap got too many variables– I have my opinions tho…. But Ima mind my business.”

Rihanna Announces Her Third Savage X Fenty Show With A Sultry Teaser

Rihanna’s annual Savage X Fenty shows have become an event to look forward to in recent years. There have been two editions so far, and now Rihanna has shared some details about this year’s show. Rihanna posted a trailer for the event, Savage X Fenty Show Vol. 3, on social media today, which goes down on September 24 and will again be broadcast on Amazon Prime Video. The clip doesn’t offer more info beyond that, but it does offer stylized footage of Rihanna sporting some revealing looks.

There’s no word yet on who will be making appearances at the show, but based on past events, it should be a star-studded affair. Either performing or making an appearance at last year’s show, for example, were Travis Scott, Roddy Ricch, Rosalia, Miguel, Bad Bunny, Ella Mai, Mustard, Lizzo, Bella Hadid, Big Sean, Cara Delevingne, Christian Combs, Demi Moore, Irina Shayk, Laura Harrier, Normani, Paloma Elsesser, Paris Hilton, Rico Nasty, and Willow Smith, among others.

Even beyond this, times are good for Rihanna, as it was revealed earlier this month that she is now a billionaire.
