Sonya Massey Update: Sangamon County Sheriff Promises To Retire

Sangamon County Sheriff Jack Campbell, embroiled in controversy following the fatal shooting of Sonya Massey on July 6, said he is stepping down. Campbell, who has been sheriff since 2018, is retiring no later than Aug. 31, he said in a statement on August 9. Former county deputy Sean P. Grayson has been charged with Massey’s murder. He pleaded not guilty and remains in custody after again being denied pre-trial release.

Sangamon County Board Chairman Andy Van Meter has final say in naming an interim replacement. Campbell’s second in command is Chief Deputy Anthony Mayfield. Calls for Campbell’s resignation had come from many sides, including Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton. Campbell previously refused to resign, saying it would be “irresponsible.” Massey’s family members also called for him to be let go. In a statement provided, Pritzker hoped a fresh start with new leadership “will usher in a new era of reform and rebuilt the trust lost between the Sangamon County community and sheriff’s office. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump said Campbell’s retirement “marks a turning point in the ongoing pursuit of justice for Sonya Massey.”

Head Coach And GM Of USWNT Both Resign

Head coach Vlatko Andonovski and General Manager Kate Markgraf have both resigned their positions with the United States Women’s National Soccer Team (USWNT). The moves come after the team suffered its worst-ever performance at a World Cup. The two-time defending champions only managed to win one game at the tournament in Australia and New Zealand, beating Vietnam 3-0 in the Group Stage. After two draws to close out the group stage, they lost on penalties to Sweden in the Round of 16.

Both Andonovski and Markgraf had held their respective positions since 2019. Markgraf made hiring the Macedonian coach the first major decision of her tenure. Andonovski had no prior international coaching experience while Markgraft, a USWNT legend herself, had no prior experience in sports administration. Their tenure has been marked by a noted downturn in the fortunes of the American side. The team earned a bronze medal at the 2020 Olympics preceding their World Cup failures.

Future of USWNT In The Balance

Both decisions were expected. Markgraf, whose contract expired at the end of August, had already made the decision to leave the role before the World Cup. Meanwhile, there was no way that Andonovski could stay on after an abysmal performance from the sidelines at the World Cup. In short, Andonovski ran the USWNT like you would a domestic club. He brought in masses of young talent in the hopes of developing them into superstars. Meanwhile, he ran a tactical philosophy counter-intuitive to the demands of a national team. However, with an Olympic campaign less than a year away, the US Soccer Federation must act fast to stem the bleeding.

It’s unclear if the position of GM will be filled after Markgraf vacates it. Given that the team won multiple World Cups without one, it’s not exactly necessary for US success. Meanwhile, numerous superstar candidates have been floated for the vacant head coach position. The problem is that many of these candidates are still under contract with their current federations. Those federations would demand an absolute ransom to have them join the US. The most likely solution would be to announce an interim coach until the Olympics and then hire a full-time leader to coach the team into the 2027 World Cup. A host for that competition will be selected next year. Bids from Belgium/Germany/The Netherlands, South Africa, Brazil, and The US/Mexico have been accepted by FIFA.

College Bowling Coach Goes Viral After Defending Affair With Student

Ten-pin bowling has been a sanctioned NCAA championship since the early 2000s. A women’s only event, the first NCAA championship for the sport was held in 2004. It’s an NCAA sport that doesn’t get a lot of attention or love but has a thriving fandom and a high level of competition. However, it has suddenly been thrust into the mainstream sports spotlight for all the wrong reasons.

Stephen F. Austin University, located in the Texan city of Nacogdoches, is a two-time NCAA bowling champion. They most recently won the national title in 2019 behind MOP Paige Breeney. Furthermore, they finished as runners-up to McKendree in 2022. But now the program is at the center of a controversy that has taken the sports world by storm.

SFA Bowling Assistant Coach Gives Wild Interview After Resignation

First reported by The Nacogdoches Daily Sentinel and The Lufkin Daily News, SFA bowling assistant coach Steve Lemke resigned after it was revealed he was having an affair with a student-athlete. Furthermore, the affair was discovered by Amanda Lemke, his wife and head coach of the SFA bowling team. The Lemkes have since filed for divorce. If the story wasn’t wild enough already, Steve chose to defend the relationship in public comments.

“I knew it was kind of a no-no, but there’s not a rule saying it can’t happen,” Steve Lemke said. “There’s not a law saying I’m going to go to jail for doing something like this. There’s nothing in stone. I guess it’s just an ethics code, like we frown upon it, but there’s no rule, there’s no law broken.” The affair was discovered when Amanda saw texts from the student-athlete on Steve’s phone and questioned her husband about it. However, the story is set to blow up further after Stephen A. Smith remarked that he was preparing to comment on it on the next episode of The Stephen A. Smith Show.
