Welcome back to our R&B Season playlist, whose latest update rounded up the best of the best releases of the week pertaining to the genre’s orbit. To start, we have to shout out the new single from Roy Woods, as “Rockstar Baby” is a very smooth and charismatic cut. It fuses some elements of woozy, psychedelic, but nonetheless hard-hitting trap with passionate vocal runs, light string embellishments, and what sound like some The Weeknd-inspired deliveries and flows. It’s energetic enough to perk your ear up and engage you in the sound, but chilled-out enough to let you sit back and enjoy the vibes.

As for more genre fusions in the R&B world, Jessie Reyez and Ari Lennox teamed up for a slightly dancehall-inspired and relaxing collab, “JUST LIKE THAT.” Both vocalists share a lot of vocal chemistry on the track thanks to their whispered harmonies and more powerful exclamations, and the acoustic guitar is a very tender anchor to the cut’s atmosphere. The drums are very light as well, keeping things simple so your attention mostly goes to the singers’ melodic prowess.

HNHH R&B Season Playlist: Stream

Elsewhere on R&B Season, we have more dreamy and somewhat melancholy fare, such as Chase Shakur’s new song “2ofUs.” The big draw behind this record on impact is the slick, crisp, and steady drum break that energizes an otherwise ethereal and minimal sonic pallet. Chase’s voice remains buttery throughout, mixing in well with the synth pads and keys embellishments. However, the single also adds some subtle melodic elements here and there to flesh this aspect of it out, namely some floating synthesizers and background vocals that harmonize with ease.

Finally, we’d be remiss not to mention Nao’s chilling, wondrous, but still funky new jam, “Elevate.” The high-pitched vocal delivery offsets you a little bit on impact, but by the time it matches with dramatic chords, slow-burning and cavernous drums, and a buzzing electric guitar solo, it fully reaches its evocative potential. Even though the year is starting to die down a bit as far as new music releases, we still have some gems to talk about on our latest R&B Season playlist update. First off, we have two new records from Jorja Smith on her most recent two-pack: “Loving You” featuring Maverick Sabre and “Don’t Let Me Go.” The former is a piano-led ballad with lovelorn lyrics, a gorgeous vocal performance, soft snaps, and grand harmonies to beef the cut up a little bit. As for the latter, it’s a soft acoustic guitar track along a similarly romantic and melancholy line, with vocal harmonies that serve more as emphasis than the building swells of the other song.

Elsewhere on R&B Season, we also wanted to shout out another collection of a few loosies, Ella Mai’s 3 EP. As the title suggests, these three new records are pretty distinct from each other, with “One Of These” being a peppy and highly percussive brass cut and “Little Things” being more of a smooth, woozy journey over a trap beat. For our money, though, the highlight is definitely “Hearts On Deck” thanks to its warm bass, glistening synth keys, catchy melodies, and a simple but grounded snap-based instrumental.

HNHH R&B Season Playlist Update: Stream

Finally, we’d be remiss not to mention the ongoing return of one of the R&B world’s most beloved stars of the early 2000s. Mario brought a lot of soul and class to his latest single “Glad You Came,” built around a crisp and groovy drum kit, light piano flutters, and gliding vocal runs. The heartwarming record definitely embodies its comforting and optimistic lyrical matter in its sonic presentation, as it doesn’t feel overly dramatic or bombastic. If there was any doubt if he still had it, you can cross that skepticism off.

As the year starts to close out, the music industry as a whole is slowing down a bit with its new releases. But we still have a couple of killer tracks to share from the R&B world on our latest R&B Season playlist update, including a selection from Jacquees’ new aptly titled album, Baby Making. It’s a big blend of a lot of what makes the genre so great, and what has made fans appreciate him for so long. The track “Touchdown” in particular is what we want to point you to, with its slow-burning drums, light guitar licks to kick it off, and some subtle but welcome background vocal harmonies.

Next up on our R&B Season playlist update is the new single from Lola Young, “Charlie” featuring Lil Yachty. It’s a fitting link-up given their musical styles, and one that starts off pretty smoky and intimate. The lengthy cut builds little by little with some muted and evolving drums, gruff electric guitar riffs, and soaring vocals from Lola. Yachty eventually breaks through with a steady but still enveloping flow that transitions from a verse to some great melodies.

HNHH R&B Season Playlist: Stream

Finally, Cleo Sol’s new cut “Fear When You Fly” is a very tender and soothing guitar-led ballad that’s also very patient. It’s not until over a third of the way in that the drums come in. Most importantly, it’s probably the most passionate vocal performance on all this R&B Season update, beautifully balancing soars and soft-spoken affirmations seemingly about companionship. It’s mostly a minimal cut, but small yet effective additions of brass and background vocals give it that extra kick.

The fall is still bringing us a lot of great new music releases, and our latest R&B Season update is here to round up the best of the best the genre’s related drops had to offer this week. As for our blockbuster pick, we can’t deny that Tommy Richman made his mark with his debut album COYOTE. We’d recommend you check the whole thing out, but “TENNESSEE” with Trevor Spitta and Zachary Moon is a particular highlight. Each artist compliments each other’s charisma with trade-off verses and refrains over a bouncy and nocturnal trap-inspired beat. It’s the right balance of building off past work while putting a foot forward.

Elsewhere on R&B Season, we also wanted to shout out Ciara and Busta Rhymes for their woozy and minimal new record, “Wassup.” The cut starts off with some whispered and rapid R&B flows and vocal melodies, building up the track’s sultry but nonetheless hard-hitting and atmospheric instrumental. Eventually, Busta comes through with his trademark speed, beating the drum pattern into the ground and electrifying the sparse synths and bass. At the end of the day, the song succeeds at its goal to entrance and excite listeners thanks to its balance of speed and vibes.

HNHH R&B Season Playlist: Stream

As far as new albums from the R&B world this week, we have to mention Leon Thomas’ latest full-length, MUTT. With guests like Masego, Wale, Ty Dolla $ign, Freddie Gibbs, Baby Rose, and Axl Folie, he was able to construct a versatile, lush, and engaging body of work. However, Thomas shines solo on the standout “SAFE PLACE,” which is a horn-bolstered and stark display of passion. The big highlight, though, is his performance, which goes through various fast flows that don’t compromise his charismatic bars and deliveries.

Finally, we’d be remiss not to send Mustafa’s new album Dunya your way. It’s a gorgeous, heartfelt, and tender collection of tracks like “I’ll Go Anywhere” that really entice you with their light but resonant instrumentation. Welcome to autumn, where the influx of new R&B-related tracks isn’t slowing down. Moreover, we’ve got our latest R&B Season playlist update here to round up the best of the best around the genre that came out this week. This time around, we wanted to first shout out the new Laila! album, Gap Year! It’s a 17-track of some really funky and lush bedroom pop mixed with R&B-style vocal melodies, infectious basslines, airy deliveries, and a lot of fun-loving charisma. As one of the rising stars within the game this year, she’s displaying her versatile talents even more here thanks to excellent cuts such as “Want 2.”

On a more classic R&B tip, we have the new Queen Naija single “Good Girls Finish Last.” It’s another example of acoustic guitar balladry, but the earthy percussion pattern does a lot to separate it from the more sad and down-trodden style associated with that archetype. Some harmonious backing vocals and a tight lovelorn narrative also help to center this track into more of its own identity. If you’re looking for some tender jams this week to soothe you, then this should be right up your alley.

Another project we wanted to highlight on this R&B Season update is RINI’s new seven-tracker, Lucky 7. Its sonic character is mostly built around dreamy guitar tones, softly buzzing bass, crips drums, and an overall atmospheric approach to indie and R&B fusions. One particular standout is “Far Away,” whose chime embellishments and measured vocal approach closes the project out quite well. But don’t let that fool you: the rest is just as worth it.

Finally, we’d be remiss not to mention the genre-fusing full-length from Fred again.., ten days. While not all of it takes influence from R&B, as it’s mostly an electronic experience, “fear less” with Sampha is among its most interesting and well-developed experiments. If you’re looking for a particular highlight from this new record to get you started, we’d recommend “When He’s Not There” featuring Lucky Daye. Back to more traditional R&B vibes, though: Muni Long came through with her new album Revenge, and there are many songs that live up to this title. Another mention on this playlist update is Mustafa’s new single ahead of his next album. The track is titled “Old Life,” and there’s a very palpable sense of nostalgia and tenderness that is captivating to witness.

Our latest R&B Season playlist update might be a bit scant this week, but fortunately, the new tracks from the genre’s orbit this week are top tier. First up is an unexpected but welcome collaboration from Jessie Reyez and Lil Wayne, the gentle and indie-inspired “RIDIN.” Of course, this guitar-led and percussively steady instrumental contrasts quite markedly with Tunechi’s more lewd and playful lyrical content. Nevertheless, the passion and lust definitely comes through here, especially thanks to the Toronto singer’s tender vocals that charismatically reach higher registers as the track evolves. If you’re looking for a summery jam to close out the season soon, play this with the windows down.

Also on our R&B Season update is the funky and confidently boastful new single from Chxrry22, “Poppin Out (Mistakes).” The XO signee sounds self-assured on this cut, excitedly anticipating a fun night out after a long time away from her city. Moreover, the drums here are reminiscent of some 2000s Timbo or Neptunes worship, matched with rubbery bass, gorgeous vocal harmonies, and some very light and atmospheric background synth pads. While there isn’t much of a melodic anchor in the instrumentation, the Toronto star definitely makes up for it through her own runs and refrains.

Elsewhere, we have another genre-fusing R&B record with Eric Bellinger and Jastin Martin’s new collab, “Chase.” This time around, it mixes some familiar ’90s soul vocal melodies with the infectious New York drill bounce that has dominated the East Coast as of late. As expected, there’s not a standout synth or melodic riff to the beat itself, but the two vocalists take center stage. Their light and airy voices mix together really well for a chemistry-filled team-up, and we’re sure that if you’re a fan of these styles, this will be right up your alley.
