New music from Princess Nokia has been a rarity in 2022. In March, she dropped the piercing “No Effort,” hitting back at anyone who dares doubt her steez. That’s been it so far, but there’s a reason for this. It’s because Nokia is about to make her film debut in the Daughter Of The Sea, directed by Alexis Garcia and filmed in Puerto Rico. In the film, Nokia plays the starring role of Yanise, who returns to Puerto Rico from New York following her grandfather’s death and has a vision that leads to a spiritual awakening. It’s a role that the Afro-Boricua rapper from Harlem was born to play and it illustrates the deep connection she forged as of late with her Puerto Rican roots.

Now on “Diva,” Princes Nokia’s second track of the year, she’s showcasing her Puerto Rican heritage and the Taíno culture in full force. The beat sounds like it was forged on the Caribbean Seaside, as Nokia raps about powerful women in music who have laid the groundwork for her to walk on, singing: “I feel like Beyoncé, I feel like Shakira, lemonade, I’m juicy, hips don’t lie, Selena. Britney, Christina, rest in peace, Aaliyah. I feel like a goddess, I feel like a diva.” All the while a trumpet bellows, and a tropical guitar strums over breezy a thump.

The video, directed by Robot MoonJuice, was filmed in Puerto Rico. The rapper and activist is among the townspeople before coming into a lively house party that ends with a drum circle and dance-off.

Princess Nokia Claps Back At Doubters On ‘No Effort,’ Her First Track Of 2022

Princess Nokia is already a marquee hip-hop act but now the Harlem rapper is signed to a major label and slated to take on a range of summer festivals worldwide. Her pointed style on the mic remains unchanged, though, and if there was any doubt, “No Effort” claps back at any doubters left in the dust.

“Look at me, so clean, no effort, ponytail, ripped jeans, no effort. Face clean, gold ring, no effort, insane, my chain, big pressure,” she raps over a throwback beat. She cruises through a cold and sunny NYC day in the new clip, flashing her dance moves in the process. She’s always had the juice, no doubt, but how many rappers do you know that can pull off opening for Haim at MSG? Princess Nokia will be doing that on May 17 and then some from there.

Yung Baby Tate Backs Up Princess Nokia On The Flouncy ‘Boys Are From Mars’

Riffing on the popular dating advice book, Princess Nokia points out the differences in genders on her new single “Boys Are From Mars.” Offering her own, slightly salty advice to listeners, she asserts that not only are men and women from different planets but that it’s also up to women to set the terms of engagement in the gender war — and in love. Yung Baby Tate joins her sister-in-arms to spit her own clever verse goofing on men’s inability to deliver and telling girls to “focus on yourself” while doing helpful activities like tai chi and yoga.

“Boys Are From Mars” is Princess Nokia’s second single of the year after the J-Lo-inspired “It’s Not My Fault” which symbolized coming of age for “the average millennial woman, taking control of herself as the subject.” However, whereas “It’s Not My Fault” and Nokia’s other most recent video, “I Like Him,” took a techno-futuristic approach to their respective visual components, the lyrics video for “Boys Are From Mars” takes its inspiration from retro cinema instead — particularly the Saturday afternoon matinee double-features of the 1970s, which featured Blaxploitation and martial arts flicks as their main draws. As the lyrics flash on the screen, the two artists can be seen in silhouette, throwing flare-legged high kicks and waving curved Chinese swords.

Ashnikko And Princess Nokia Bring The Renaissance Fair To A Whole New Level In The ‘Slumber Party’ Video

Ashnikko has been on a tear ever since her stint opening for Danny Brown put her on the map in the underground rap world, and the release of her Demidevil album at the top was diverse enough to put her on our 2021 Rising Pop Stars To Watch list, too. She’s as versatile as they come, perhaps best illustrated on her Birds Of Prey soundtrack co-write, Doja Cat’s “Boss Bitch” (Which shares a name with a song she features on off Brooke Candy’s 2019 album that I highly recommend).

Despite her obvious skill in writing songs for other artists, though, today she’s back to promoting songs off her own Demidevil, sharing the video for the Princess Nokia-featuring “Slumber Party,” a raucous affair that finds Ashnikko quite literally stealing your girl. Dressed in a deconstructed renaissance fair style of corsets and flowy hair, the two women playfully subvert heteronormative ideas about innocent slumber parties with a decidedly sexual, queered account of what might happen between the two of them. As each frame of the painting comes to life, eventually the women are dancing through their explicit lyrics together, as sex toys and almost-make-out-moments abound. Princess Nokia’s J. Lo-Inspired ‘It’s Not My Fault’ Video Is An Ode To OnlyFans

Princess Nokia has been making music for nearly a decade. With a handful of albums and mixtapes to her name, her most recent project was the 2019 double LP Everything Is Beautiful/Everything Sucks. Though the rapper has received a fair number of accolades for her independent releases, Princess Nokia makes her major label debut with the J. Lo-inspired video to her new track “It’s Not My Fault.”

Directed by Sebastian Sdaigui, the “It’s Not My Fault” video takes place in a futuristic timeline. The rapper is able to connect with her viewers through virtual reality, and she uploads content on her OnlyFans page while flaunting her worth. “It’s not my fault / That I’m that b*tch / So talk your sh*t / ‘Cause I’m still rich,” she spits at the single’s chorus.

The rapper’s “It’s Not My Fault” visual is heavily inspired by J. Lo’s “If You Had My Love” video, which Princess Nokia says is one of her “favorites of all time.” Speaking about the video’s concept in a statement, Princess Nokia said:

“My video symbolizes my mainstream coming of age, just as it did Jennifer’s. It symbolizes the average millennial woman, taking control of herself as the subject. I control my narrative and I celebrate my beauty. It’s hyper-futurism and almost 22 years later we are moving into a more interactive era.”
