What Was Sexyy Red’s First Official Viral Hit?

In what seems to be a little bit of time, the world has come to know Sexyy Red. The 25-year-old rapper has made her mark on the rap scene, and is well on her way to becoming an unshakable force in Hip Hop. In 2023, a number of publications recognized her as one of the year’s biggest breakout stars, and rightly so. While her swift rise to the top may not be unprecedented, it is certainly worthy of note.

In a short amount of time, she has worked with some of music’s biggest artists, and we imagine it feels surreal. However, her success is certainly not undeserved, and her discography points to how much of a hard worker she is. Sexyy Redd now has a number of hits to her name. However, the most important of them all is arguably her first viral hit, and the song that put her on the map.

Sexyy Red Takes Us To “Pound Town”

On January 27, 2023, Sexyy Red released “Pound Town,” accompanied by a music video. Before then, she had released a number of tracks and one mixtape between 2019 and 2022. However, it was “Pound Town” that catapulted her to fame. In a May 2023 interview with Complex, the rapper spoke about how the track came to be. “I was in the studio, just on some lazy stuff, and my people was like, ‘Come on, you got more songs to record.’ And I’m like, ‘I ain’t got nothing wrote down, come on now.’ So I went in the booth, and this was my first time ever freestyling. I heard the beat and just started rapping from there. The whole thing was a freestyle,” she said.

Later in the interview, Sexyy Red admitted to having no expectations for the song becoming a hit. According to her, it was a “cool little fun song to sing with your friends.” However, she was pleasantly surprised when “Pound Town” started doing unprecedented numbers after its release. Subsequently, it gained traction on TikTok, largely due to the infamous lyrics: “My coochie pink, my booty-hole brown.” Soon, it sparked the viral Pound Town Challenge on the social media app, which earned Sexyy Red more internet fame. The popularity of the track on TikTok eventually led to it becoming the rapper’s first viral hit.

Commercial Success, Worldwide Fame, & Co-Signs

Subsequently, Sexyy Red linked up with Nicki Minaj to work on a remix of the viral track. On May 26, 2023, “Pound Town 2” was released, and as expected, fans ate it up. It didn’t take long after its release for “Pound Town 2” to appear on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It became Sexyy’s first song to appear on the chart, and peaked at No. 66. In addition, it also appeared on the Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs chart, as well as the Rhythmic, and R&B/Hip Hop Airplay charts. On the year-end Hot 100 chart, “Pound Town 2” ranked in 64th place.

While “Pound Town” and its remix did impressive numbers, Sexyy Red grew in renown. The rapper received co-signs from several celebrities, including Cardi B and Post Malone, among others. Furthermore, the success of the song kickstarted the very impressive feature run Sexyy Red was on throughout 2023. Her subsequent appearance on Drake’s “Rich Baby Daddy” can be traced back to this very track. Without a doubt, it is one of the most important songs in her discography. Although she originally did not regard “Pound Town” very highly, Sexyy Red will probably never forget the song.

King Isis Shared A Moody, Alternative Cover Of Sexyy Red’s ‘Pound Town’

King Isis continues to show us why they’re one of the most exciting act in the indie landscape right now. Earlier this week, the queer-led, Afro-futuristic artist from Oakland shared a trippy cover of Sexyy Red‘s “Pound Town.”

Driven by hypnotic guitars and clashing drums, Isis transformed the viral hip-hop hit into a moody, alternative banger. In a video shared to Isis’ YouTube channel, they are accompanied by a backing band, as they perform in a grungy, garage-like setting.

Throughout their discography, Isis has experimented with rock, hip-hop, R&B, and jazz sounds. In an interview with DIY Magazine, Isis explained that they don’t like to be kept inside a box, nor do they care for their music to be palatable or accessible to everyone. Rather, they make music that reflects what’s happening inside their mind at the moment, not sticking to any set routine for making music.

“I feel like it’s more palatable for songs to have a bright-sounding instrumental, and then dark lyrics. But that’s not the intention of how I write, to be accessible,” they said. “In my head it all goes together, but an outside perspective might be like, ‘What the f*ck is going on?’”

Sexyy Red Plans To Launch A Lip Gloss Line With Truly Unhinged Names Inspired By ‘Pound Town’ Lyrics

These days, it’s not really enough just to have a consistent run of hit records — artists must have multiple revenue streams, including at least one product closely tied to their personal brand. Cardi B has Whip Shots, Tyler The Creator has Golf nail polish, and so on.

As one of rap’s hottest rising stars, Sexyy Red is also launching a product inspired by her music. It’s a line of lip glosses with color names taken right out of her “Pound Town” lyrics. As she told Interview magazine, though, that has resulted in some truly unhinged titles.

“I got a lip gloss line dropping soon, y’all better shop with your girl,” she said. “I got all different flavors: Coochie Juice, Bootyhole Brown, Coochie Pink, Sex on My Period, Gonorrhea, Yellow Discharge, and Nut.”

…….

Yikes. I’m not so sure anyone would want to slap on a shade called “yellow discharge” — that just sounds gross. Of course, the hilariously outrageous turns of phrase made Sexyy’s breakout hit a memorable fan favorite and a viral classic in just a few short months, so maybe they’ll respond a little better to these than I think. Either way, if she can really find a business partner willing to go all-in and bring products with such unappetizing names to market, I’d get that money up front — leave the stock options on the table.

Who Is Sexyy Red Signed To?

St. Louis rapper Sexyy Redd broke through into the mainstream world thanks to her breakout hit “Pound Town.” The Tay Keith-produced record quickly went viral thanks to its raunchy and blunt that fans couldn’t help but recite and/or stand in shock at what they heard. Fellow musicians like Summer Walker have covered the song while others like GloRilla have shared their love for the record. Sexyy Red would go on to prove that she’s far from a one-hit wonder with the release of her debut project Hood Hottest Princess.

That record was released on through Open Shift Distribution and Gamma Records. Open Shift Distribution is also home to rappers like Real Boston Richey and Lil Double 0 while Gamma Records is an independent record label based in Chicago that was founded by former Apple Music executive Larry Jackson and connected to artists like Snoop Dogg, Usher, and Rick Ross.

Sexyy Red’s Hood Hottest Princess arrived 11 songs and features from Nicki Minaj, Tay Keith, Sukihana, Juicy J, and ATL Jacob. The rapper recently made headlines for an impromptu performance of “Pound Town” at the BET Awards. She delivered the performance from her seat in the crowd and was joined by the her fellow audience members, though gospel singer Dr. Bobby Jones was a bit shocked with the song’s lyrics. Sexyy Redd caught wind of Jones’ reaction and replied in a tweet, writing, “Wait I’m sorry Dr Bobby we did that on a Sunday too [crying emojis].”

Nicki Minaj And Ben Shapiro Are Talking About Dicks And Butts On Twitter As They Beef Over Sexyy Red’s ‘Pound Town’

Explicit music lyric offendee Ben Shapiro is making the rounds again. This time, he shared a video criticizing Sexyy Red’s “Pound Town” and the “Pound Town 2” remix with Nicki Minaj. Long story short, Shapiro isn’t a fan of the song, which he sarcastically dubbed “one of the great pieces of art in the history of Western civilization” and declared makes Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s “WAP” (which he famously has a viral history with) “look childhood-friendly.”

Minaj later clapped back on Twitter, writing, “Roman said leave his ass out of it sir! No pun intended.” Now, the two are officially beefing.

Yesterday (June 21), Shapiro responded to Minaj’s tweet, “Not possible, @NICKIMINAJ, since you have apparently never recorded a song that left your ass out of it.” To that, Minaj replied, “Next time I’ll be sure to add my dick. So you can suk it. Love you [tongue out emoji] [face surrounded by hearts emoji] [kissy face with heart emoji].” Shapiro fired back, “Surprise twist: @NICKIMINAJ was the one with the anaconda all along.” As of now, that’s the end of the dialogue between the two.

So far, Red hasn’t responded to Shapiro’s video except by retweeting some clips from it.

Infamous ‘WAP’ Hater Ben Shapiro Has Set His Sights On ‘Pound Town,’ So Sexyy Red And Nicki Minaj Both Reacted To The Criticism

Sexyy Red and Tay Keith have a hit on their hands with “Pound Town,” which received further attention when Nicki Minaj hopped on the remix, dubbed “Pound Town 2.” It’s a super saucy song, so naturally, people who aren’t into that sort of explicit lyric won’t love it. In that category of reaction content, conservative commentator Ben Shapiro has become the ultimate purveyor of flabbergasted music responses since going viral for his reading of Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s “WAP” back in 2020.

Now, he has some thoughts about both “Pound Town” versions. Minaj and Red, though, are just brushing it off: Responding to a clip of Shapiro discussing “Pound Town,” Minaj tweeted, “Roman said leave his ass out of it sir! No pun intended.” Red also retweeted a six-second video of Shapiro reciting the “My coochie pink, my booty-hole brown” line of the song.

As for Shapiro’s take on “Pound Town” and the remix, he tackled the subject in a recent video from his Daily Wire outlet, in which he sarcastically calls the song “one of the great pieces of art in the history of Western civilization.” After breaking down some of Red’s background, he declared that “Pound Town” is so explicit that “it makes ‘WAP’ look childhood-friendly.”

He then played a clip from Red’s recent UPROXX Sessions performance of “Pound Town,” in which Red raps the opening verse: “I’m out of town, thuggin’ with my rounds / My coochie pink, my booty-hole brown / Where the n****s? I’m lookin’ for the hoes / Quit playin’, n****, come suck a b*tch toe.”

Shapiro could only snicker and laugh before immediately launching into some ad reads. After that, Shapiro recited the lyrics himself and questioned Minaj’s decision to hop on the remix. Shapiro acknowledged that his reading of the “Pound Town” lyrics will probably go viral, and since Minaj and Red themselves have caught wind of it, it seems like he was right on that one.

Sexyy Red Lays Down The Five Laws Of ‘Pound Town’

It’s hard to go anywhere without hearing the lyrics “I’m outta town, thuggin with my rounds” thanks to Sexyy Red’s Tay Keith-produced summer anthem, “Pound Town,” which is why she had to stop by Uproxx to speak to our very own Cherise Johnson and gives the lay of the land with “Sexyy Red’s 5 Laws of Pound Town.”

While the song is raunchy, downright fun and easily relatable, there are rules you must follow when you go to Pound Town. The first law of Pound Town is: Condoms. Sure, Sexyy is all for having a good time, but safety and sexual health comes first! The rest of the laws follow the same tone of responsibility, fairness, and hygiene.

With mind-blowing lyrics like “my coochie pink / my booty hole brown,” the self-proclaimed hood hottest princess speaks on what a night in Pound Town is like in its descriptive, adrenaline-fueled glory. It’s really the best place to be for showing out, but in a fresh and safe way.

Sexyy Red’s rise to fame has also been studded with a Nicki Minaj collab, who is featured on “Pound Town 2,” the remix for the viral hit. Sexyy also just released her new album Hood Hottest Princess, which features eleven songs proving exactly why she’s a star.
