Dennis Schröder Makes Official Professional Soccer Debut In Germany

This offseason, Dennis Schroder, a guard for the Brooklyn Nets, exchanged his basketball sneakers for soccer cleats. Schroder made his debut in professional soccer on Wednesday with FC Germania Bleckenstedt, a team that competes in the sixth level of Germany. German-born Schroder participated in 62 minutes of the team’s 5-1 loss against SC Gottingen 05. Shroder, 30, who has always had a passion for soccer, had to be thrilled to play in the game regardless of the outcome. On June 6, Schroder will take the field again, this time against VfL Wahrenholz.

Regardless of the success of this side project, Schroder most likely will not leave his day job anytime soon. Formerly selected in the first round of the NBA Draft, Schroder divided his 2023–24 season between the Toronto Raptors and Brooklyn. Schroder averaged 14.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 6.1 assists in 80 games. In addition to his 11-year NBA career, Schroder has had success playing for Germany abroad. Schroder won the tournament MVP award and guided his nation to a gold medal in the FIBA World Cup last year. Before defeating Serbia in the championship game, the seasoned point guard led his side to a semifinal victory against the United States.

Dennis Schröder Plays In First Professional Soccer Game

Dennis Schröder was born and raised in Braunschweig, Germany. Prior to focusing on the NBA, he played for the Phantoms Braunschweig (2010–2013) and SG Braunschweig (2009–2013). After two years with the Oklahoma City Thunder, he played his first five years of professional basketball with the Atlanta Hawks (2013–18). Before joining the Nets in 2024, Schröder was a member of six different teams.

Schröder is using his pro soccer debut to stay in shape ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics. Germany is looking to build on their recent success with a strong showing at the Olympics. The world is loaded with superstars like Nikola Jokic and Luka Doncic, as well as rookie phenom Victor Wembanyama who will be leading a good French team. Team USA has put together a super team consisting of Steph Curry, LeBron James, Anthony Edwards, and Anthony Davis. Overall, the Paris Olympics are going to be cat nip for basketball fans.

“No Question” That Israel Will Compete At Paris Olympics, IOC President Says

IOC President Thomas Bach has made it clear that Israel will compete at the upcoming Olympics in Paris. “No, there is no question about this,” Bach said when asked if Israel could be banned from participating. A handful of protests have been made since Israel resumed hostilities with Palestine last October. These protests have primarily stemmed from Russia, who are currently prohibited from participating due to doping scandals and their invasion of Ukraine.

Furthermore, Bach said there would be special attention given to Israeli athletes who compete outside secured venues, such as cyclists. “Since the heinous attack on the Israeli team [Munich 1972], there were always special measures being taken with Israeli athletes. The authorities feel comfortable that the same will be true of course also for Paris, Marseille, or wherever there will be Israeli representation,” Bach noted. At the time of writing, 55 Israeli athletes have qualified for the Games.

Kevin Durant Sets High Team USA Benchmark For Olympics

As the Games draw closer and closer, more and more athletes have begun to speak on their intentions about the Games. Kevin Durant has stated that he wants Team USA to “really make a statement” at the Olympics with “40, 50-point wins” against their opponents. There are four Olympic berths left to decide for the men’s competition. However, currently, the USA’s opponents could include France, South Sudan, Canada, Japan, Germany, Serbia, and Australia. Durant, a member of the initial player pool for Team USA, is a frontrunner to return to the squad, which is expected to be announced in May.

During the 2020 Olympics, in which Team USA won gold, they averaged a margin of victory of 25.4 points. However, this involved bouncing back from an opening game loss to France. They would later beat by five in the gold medal match. Only one of Team USA’s games, a 120-66 win over Iran, met Durant’s 2024 benchmark of “40, 50-point wins”. Team USA has won every men’s basketball gold medal since the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

Snoop Dogg Will Be Bringing His Distinct ‘Snoop Style’ To Join NBC’s 2024 Paris Olympics Coverage

Snoop Dogg will be helping out with some coverage of the Olympics this summer, as he will team up with NBCUniversal in Paris. The news came during the Sunday Night Football halftime on New Year’s Eve.

As for what to expect when Snoop starts helping out on July 26, he’ll be chatting with NBC’s Olympics host, Mike Tirico, and will “explore the city’s iconic landmarks, attend Olympic competitions and events and make visits to the athletes, their friends and families,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. And it will probably be very entertaining, even if you’re not super into sports.

“I grew up watching the Olympics and am thrilled to see the incredible athletes bring their A-game to Paris,” he shared. “It’s a celebration of skill, dedication and the pursuit of greatness. We’re going to have some amazing competitions and, of course, I will be bringing that Snoop style to the mix. It’s going to be the most epic Olympics ever, so stay tuned, and keep it locked. Let’s elevate, celebrate and make these games unforgettable, smoke the competition, and may the best shine like gold. Peace and Olympic LOVE, ya dig?”

As an early teaser, Snoop appeared in a video with Olympic stars from different sports, including “Suni Lee (gymnastics), A’ja Wilson (basketball), Jagger Eaton (skateboarder), and Kelly Cheng and Sara Hughes (beach volleyball),” per the publication.

Back in 2021, Snoop Dogg had also provided some hilarious highlights commentary of the Tokyo Olympics on Peacock — which led to him being picked for primetime.
