Nas Gives Rakim His Flowers At Grandmaster Hip-Hop Awards

Nas had some major love for Rakim at the Grandmaster Hip-Hop Awards. “When I first heard your music…If you had told me that I would be on stage saluting you…Like, this is crazy. This is a rapper’s dream. This is a hip-hop artist’s dream. This don’t make no sense. It not regular, this don’t happen. This happen because it was supposed to happen. What you laid down, the foundation…When I first heard your music, they was doing a dance to your music in my neighborhood. I didn’t understand how there was a synchronized dance to a song that just came out called the wop,” Nas said in his speech.

Of course, Rakim is widely considered one of the greatest hip-hop artists of all time. 1987’s Paid In Full is seen as one of the genre’s most influential albums. However, that can be said for most of Rakim’s catalog. It’s only fitting that Nas shout out the pioneer as passionately as he did as part of the final weeks of hip-hop’s 50th anniversary. Furthermore, it’s extra poignant coming from the Queens rapper, who has been open in the past about just how much Rakim has inspired his own work.

Nas’ Paid In Full Audition Resurfaces

Speaking of Paid In Full, it turns out that Nas actually auditioned for the film of the same name. In his resurfaced audition tape, Nas auditioned for the role of Rico, which would eventually go to fellow rapper Cam’ron. Paid In Full came out four years after Nas’ acting debut in Belly. However, fans weren’t impressed with Nas’ performance, saying they were glad that Cam’ron landed the role instead.

The same year that Paid In Full dropped, Nas would release God’s Son, his sixth studio album. Seen as his “most personal” album, it reflects on everything from his beef with JAY-Z to the death of his mother. However, it only peaked at #12 on the Billboard Album 200. It marked Nas’ third consecutive album that failed to reach #1. However, he would return to the top of the album charts four years later. His eighth album, Hip Hop Is Dead, would be his first #1 album since I Am…

Nas Teams With Steve Stoute, & More To Give $500k To Underappreciated Artists

Nas, Steve Stoute, Ben Horowitz, and more have all come together with the Paid In Full Foundation to provide $500,000 to under-recognized artists in hip-hop. They are putting on the first-ever Hip Hop Grandmaster Awards and will give away 100% of the event’s proceeds to this end. They plan to honor Rakim and Scarface with the awards.

“Over the past several decades, Hip Hop music and culture rose from a local niche New York art form into a global phenomenon,” a statement on the Paid in Full Foundation’s website says. “In doing so, it has created countless careers, many fortunes, and, most importantly, gave hope and aspiration to a generation of young people.”

It continues: “Unfortunately, many of the most impactful original artists never received recognition proportional with their exceptional contributions to arts and culture. The Paid in Full Foundation aims to rectify that through its grantmaking program, by both honoring the people who built Hip Hop and enabling them to pursue their creative and intellectual pursuits for the benefit of society.” Steve Stoute recently discussed his efforts with the Paid In Full Foundation during an appearance on the Rap Radar Podcast. “What I wanna do is, all of the artists who [came in] early who signed bad deals or were taken advantage of, that the least we could do is give to them,” Stoute said at the time. “Pay that forward and give to them.” Check out that interview below.

He added, “No one’s ever done this before. No one’s given the people who’ve helped move this industry forward reparations of some sort for what they’ve done but didn’t get back.” Be on the lookout for further updates on the Paid In Full Foundation on HotNewHipHop.

Damian Lillard Recreates Iconic “Paid In Full” Scene With Cam’ron

Paid In Full is cult classic crime drama from 2002. Starring Wood Harris, Mekhi Phifer, and Cam’ron, the film follows three Harlem drug dealers. The film is a fictionalized version of the lives of actual 80s dealers AZ Faison, Rich Porter, and Alpo Martinez. Largely panned by critics, the film found a following amongst select audiences. It currently holds a 93% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. One of the most iconic scenes of the film is when the three main characters get Chinese takeout in an artfully shot scene.

Now, 21 years later, Cam’ron has recreated that scene with the help of a surprise guest. In a photo posted to social media, Cam’ron can be seen recreating the Chinese food scene with the help of NBA star Damian Lillard. The Blazers superstar was 12 years old when Paid In Full came out and still a full decade away from joining the NBA. However, it’s a fun moment of levity amid a brutal offseason for Lillard.

It’s now been several months since Damian Lillard requested a trade out of Portland. That request appears to be going nowhere. The Blazers appear happy to wait on an offer they would be willing to give Lillard up for. If you have forgotten, and who can blame you at this point, Lillard is under contract for four years and has no trade clauses in his contract. If the Blazers don’t trade him and he refuses to play, he’s the one that suffers.

Meanwhile, there doesn’t appear to be a trade market beyond Miami, who aren’t willing to meet the Blazers’ demands. “There’s not that many teams that are going to give you a bunch of players and picks for a 33-year-old who can’t stay healthy and has a giant contract sitting there. It was not anything Dame said or Aaron Goodwin said that shut down the market. That stuff didn’t help. But there weren’t teams lined up for him even before that,” an anonymous NBA executive told Forbes.
