Popstar Benny Recruits A Fleet Of Atlanta Femcees For His New Album “Oasis”

“Atlanta is in its female renaissance. All the girls got something to prove — that’s why they can do it better than a lot of the guys.” These are the words of Atlanta producer and curator Popstar Benny on his brand-new album, Oasis. He definitely makes a valid point there, especially in the case of this year. Outside of the Drake and Kendrick Lamar beef, they have been the biggest trending topic in hip-hop. To help put more people on to the rising female rap stars in the ATL, the veteran beatmaker (Rod Wave, Kevin Abstract, Destroy Lonely) has brought on an entire roster of them.

Names include Coco, Clair Clair, Vayda, SPOOK, Woo Da Savage, sadboi, and more. If you have heard previous beats from Benny, you know he’s not your typical trap maestro. Instead, he likes to incorporate some off-kilter sound effects. Those are all over the 18-minute-long tape and they are bolstered by some of the MC’s off-beat flows/deliveries. Princesa 28 on the grimy and alien-like “Britney Spears” is a great example of that. However, “Reverb” with Glorygirl2950 might take the cake in that regard. Overall, it’s a tape that doesn’t overstay its welcome but is memorable given how some of these songs are demo length. Adding to its weirdness is the fact this project was supposedly recorded by Benny in a treehouse Airbnb in roughly a week.

Here’s Who Will (And Who Won’t) Get Inducted Into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame In 2024

In February, the nominees for the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame’s 2024 class were revealed. It was a stacked and diverse roster, featuring everybody from Mariah Carey to Ozzy Osbourne to A Tribe Called Quest.

Now, all the votes are in (including those of Uproxx’s own Steven Hyden), and last night (April 21), the Rock Hall revealed who’s getting in this year. The list is as follows:

Performer Category

Mary J. Blige
Cher
Dave Matthews Band
Foreigner
Peter Frampton
Kool & The Gang
Ozzy Osbourne
A Tribe Called Quest

Musical Influence Award

Alexis Korner
John Mayall
Big Mama Thornton

Musical Excellence Award

Jimmy Buffett
MC5
Dionne Warwick
Norman Whitfield

Ahmet Ertegun Award

Suzanne de Passe

The “performer” inductees are the ones selected by Rock Hall voters, while the other honors are doled out by the Rock Hall themselves.

As for nominees who didn’t end up get the votes for induction this year, that list includes Mariah Carey, Jane’s Addiction, Sade, Sinead O’Connor, Oasis, Lenny Kravitz, and Eric B. & Rakim.

Liam Gallagher presumably won’t be too upset about Oasis not making the cut this time around. After his band’s nomination was announced, he tweeted, “F*ck the Rock n Roll hall of fame its full of BUMBACLARTS,” as well as other things like, “I don’t need some wank award by some geriatric in a cowboy hat.”

Ka$hdami “oasis” Review

Ka$hdami is an up-and-coming rapper born in Las Vegas, Nevada and raised primarily in the DMV. He first started writing and developing his music skills between the ages of 8 and 13, before dropping several singles and projects from 2018 to the present day. The rapper, who is currently 19 years old, just dropped the latest in a long line of projects, titled oasis. Despite his young age, Dami has amassed a loyal following of over 1.1 million monthly Spotify listeners and even managed to pull in over 500,000 streams on oasis in less than 24 hours, showcasing his high-profile viral output.

Like many modern young artists, Ka$hdami broke into the industry by blowing up on social media apps such as TikTok, with a viral pop-rap sound that spread as the backing music for a number of highly-proliferated videos. Like many TikTok-era rappers, Dami has tailored his music to cater to the platform’s algorithm, which seems to remain the case with his latest album. In fact, the longest song on oasis clocks in at just barely over 2 minutes. The full project touts 12 tracks at a full length of 18 minutes. Here’s a brief look at the project and a review of the material therein.

Drowning In His Influences

Despite having spent years tinkering with music behind the scenes, Ka$hdami is still a relative newcomer to the hip-hop landscape. As a result, it becomes rapidly clear on oasis that he is still developing his own sound, and remains in the shadows of his favorite artists sonically. The opening track to the project, “Ain’t Me – Intro” sees the rapper doing a semi-decent Juice WRLD impression, with emo crooning vocal passages leading into a break-up voicemail from an unnamed female love interest.

Despite touting his namesake, the track “Kount Kash” sounds like the young MC’s best attempt at performing a Young Thug track at karaoke night, with high-pitched vocal inflections contrasting against the low-end 808s. Subsequent songs on oasis borrow flow patterns, melodies, and rhyme schemes from the likes of Playboi Carti, Trey Songz, Trippie Redd, and other hip-hop & R&B acts who have taken the time to carve out unique sounds within the industry. While Ka$hdami’s take on these sounds is perfectly acceptable and sonically enjoyable, it’s hard not to see that the 19-year-old has a lot of growing to do before he can deliver a unique classic all his own.

Ka$hdami’s Age Shows

Some of the best songs on oasis, such as “Loyalty,” offer interesting production choices which should, in theory, provide the record with an identity of its own. Unfortunately, the hyper-brief run-time of the record, at just one minute and 16 seconds, leaves little to no time to get invested in the musical themes or concepts at play. Furthermore, comparing Ka$hdami to his contemporaries, such as 19-year-old Redveil, displays how shallow and empty Dami’s lyrical content can be. Most tracks on the recent project have very little to say beyond the run-of-the-mill references to partying, being gangster, and stealing girls from uncool peers.

The only track on the album that is truly terrible is the penultimate song, “UshyGushy.” “UshyGushy” is nearly unlistenable, with jarring and unpleasant vocal tenors, disgusting juvenile references to female anatomy, and lyrics that reference the video game Minecraft, truly making the song sound like an anthem for a 10-year-old’s Twitch stream.

oasis Shows Promise For The Future

Despite the clear and present issues plaguing the release, oasis still displays a good deal of musical talent. Ka$hdami is obviously more than capable of delivering smooth lyrics and carrying a tune, and his ear for production is genuinely quite refined. Even though this project is unlikely to wow new listeners, Ka$hdami seems to have what it takes to become a formidable force in the rap industry, as long as he continues to refine his sound.

Oasis Recruits G Herbo, 19 Keys, Faheem Muhammad, EYL & More for Rebuild Chicago Event

Oasis held its REBUILD Chicago event at the Harold Washington Theater on Monday night. The event included panel talks, fireside chats, and a town hall meeting with Chicago locals to discuss ways to give back to the city. G. Herbo made an unexpected appearance on a panel to explore the value of community ownership.

The one-day seminar looked at concrete solutions to enhance, advance, and rebuild Chicago. Rashid Bilal and Troy Millings of Earn Your Leisure, Michael Amir and Faheem Muhammad of Oasis, Global Leader 19 Keys, Professional Boxer Mike Rashid, and Cory Jacobs, Senior Advisor to Sean “Diddy” Combs, were also in attendance.

“Last night was EPIC! For a thousand people to come out, in the cold, on a Monday, to learn more about OASIS is AMAZING! But REBUILD isn’t about a day, it’s a movement, it’s about action,” said Amir. “So although yesterday was a success, the real work comes tomorrow.”

G. Herbo discussed the significance of communication in order to achieve change, and he believes he has been effective in getting his message over to Chicago’s teens and young adults because he speaks to them from a place of experience rather than authority.

“These kids see me and understand I was once them,” he said. “I talk to them in a way where I’m not telling them what to do. I’m telling them I understand them and they respect it.”

19 Keys started the event with an intense speaker-to-audience conversation that drew in the crowd immediately. Mustapha Farrakhan Jr. and Julian Mitchell are also on the panel. Jermaine McArthur, an investor in Oasis, was also present. DJ Preme provided the music, and Los Angeles radio personality DJ Hed presented the broadcast.

“Rebuild Chicago was not an event! It was the launching of a program that aims to uplift people all over America,” said Muhammad. “Oasis is changing the narrative through Real Estate. Build with us!”
