The Controversy Surrounding Reggie Bush & His Heisman Trophy: A Breakdown

In a historic and unprecedented move, the Heisman Trust has announced a formal reinstatement of Reggie Bush’s long-rescinded Heisman Trophy. This has been praised by football fans, especially those who hail from USC, as a righting of a decades-old wrong. Reggie Bush originally earned his Heisman Trophy in 2005 before having the prestigious honor stripped from him in 2010. Now that he has been welcomed back into the wings of the Heisman alumnus, Bush will be invited to attend all future Heisman ceremonies.

In a statement to ESPN, Bush said, “Personally, I’m thrilled to reunite with my fellow Heisman winners and be a part of the storied legacy of the Heisman Trophy, and I’m honored to return to the Heisman family. I also look forward to working together with the Heisman Trust to advance the values and mission of the organization.” Let’s examine the history of Bush’s tenure with the Heisman Trust, and the reasoning behind his Trophy being returned nearly 20 years after he initially received it.

2005: Bush Earns The Heisman At USC

The Heisman Trophy is one of the highest honors any college athlete can achieve. The honor is bestowed upon one player each year, who is recognized for their outstanding skills on the field. When Reggie Bush received his Heisman in December 2005, he had just concluded an incredible season. The athlete rushed 1,740 yards for 16 touchdowns, and averaged 8.7 yards per carry, according to ESPN. On their recent decision to return the trophy to Reggie Bush, reps from the Heisman Trust referred to him as “unquestionably… the most outstanding college football player of 2005.”

2010: Bush Forfeits His Trophy Amid USC Scandal

Five years after receiving the Heisman Trophy, Reggie Bush forfeited it back to the Trust, following a scandal at USC. Reportedly, Bush and other Trojans players received benefits from their time on the field, which were sanctioned by the NCAA. This included thousands of dollars in compensation and even a brand-new car. As a result, the NCAA stripped the university of 14 victories from Bush’s 2003-2005 tenure, including a historic 2004 game against Oklahoma that put Bush on the national stage.

The NCAA also stripped USC of its 2004 national title in the first-ever ruling of this kind. In July 2010, USC officially returned their replica of Reggie Bush’s Heisman. This prompted Bush to follow suit a few short months later. For years, this move was looked at as a miscarriage of justice. Many fans firmly believe college athletes deserve to be compensated for the millions of dollars they bring in each year.

2021: The NCAA Rules On Athlete Compensation Changed

For years, that 2010 forfeit was where the Reggie Bush Heisman story concluded. That is, until 2021 when the NCAA updated its rules regarding student-athlete compensation. These new rules offered student football players to benefit from their name and likeness. Bush, and many others, felt that this retroactively exonerated him from his NCAA violations in 2003-2005. Since then, Bush has campaigned for a return to his Heisman status. He has also launched a defamation lawsuit against the NCAA in 2023.

2024: The Heisman Trust Finally Comes Around

Now, the Heisman Trust finally recognizes Reggie Bush’s rightful status as a Heisman winner and has reinstated his position. Many football fans and college football insiders have lobbied for this moment, including several other Heisman Trophy winners, such as USC’s Matt Leinart and Notre Dame’s Tim Brown. Johnny Manziel even went so far as to mount a personal boycott of all Heisman ceremonies earlier this year as part of a voracious push to have Bush’s honor reinstated.

Heisman Trust president Michael Comerford issued a statement upon returning the Trophy to Reggie Bush. In it, he says, “We are thrilled to welcome Reggie Bush back to the Heisman family in recognition of his collegiate accomplishments. We considered the enormous changes in college athletics over the last several years in deciding that now is the right time to reinstate the trophy for Reggie. We are so happy to welcome him back.”

Deion Sanders Ripped By Twitter For Viral Comments On Recruiting

Deion Sanders is one of the most famous coaches in college football right now. Overall, he is known for winning and turning programs into contenders again. That is exactly what he did at Jackson State. However, he eventually left the HBCU so that he could get a bigger opportunity with Colorado. Now, he is trying to turn that team into a contender again after some poor seasons. Although it is going to be a tough task, there are many who believe that Sanders is the one who can turn that program around.

Recently, the NFL legend was on the Rich Eisen Show where he got to talk about how he recruits his players. While these comments were made weeks ago, they are now starting to viral on social media. In particular, people are taking issue with his recruitment philosophy as it pertains to quarterbacks and defensive positions. “Well, we have different attributes. Smart, tough, fast, disciplined with character. Now, quarterbacks are different,” Sanders said. “We want mother, father. Dual parent. We want that kid to be 3.5 [GPA] and up. Because he has to be smart. Not bad decisions off the field, at all. Because he has to be a leader of men.”

Deion Sanders Speaks

Subsequently, Sanders spoke about what he looks for in his defensive linemen. These are the comments that truly came across as problematic for a lot of people. As you will see, his criteria are completely different, and a bit patronizing. “Defensive linemen is totally opposite,” Sanders explains. “Single mama, trying to get it, he’s on free lunch. I’m talking about just trying to make it. He’s trying to rescue mama. Like mama barely made the flight. And I want him to just go get it.“

In the Tweets down below, you can see just how upset people were with Sanders and his remarks. “A bunch of white folks kee-keeing and it didn’t give him a bit of pause. Yuck.” one user wrote. Another person pointed out the hypocrisy, saying “His own fuckin son not even from a ‘dual household,’” Overall, these comments were not a good look for Sanders. Although, it is being pointed out that every coach thinks this way, which is most definitely problematic. Let us know what you think of all of this, in the comments below.

Lil Wayne Stunned By Deion Sanders’ Colorado Locker Room Tour

Lil Wayne is one of the biggest hip-hop artists in the entire world. Overall, he is in a lot of people’s top 5s, and he will continue to be for decades. To this day, Wayne remains one of the most respected artists ever, and it has afforded him some cool opportunities. From meeting athletes to billionaires, Lil Wayne has truly seen and done it all. Moreover, he is connected with tons of athletes, who have been able to show him the behind-the-scenes version of what sports can be like.

As it turns out, the latest person to do this for Wayne was none other than Deion Sanders. Over the last few months, Coach Prime has been a huge story around college football. Following his departure from Jackson State, Sanders signed on with Colorado. Moving forward, he is expected to bring this team back to its glory years. Although this is going to be very difficult, Sanders seems up to the task. In fact, with Coach Prime going to Colorado, numerous recruits are following suit. Consequently, this team could be in for an amazing season.

Lil Wayne Gets Blown Away

As it pertains to Wayne, he got to visit Sanders at the University of Colorado facility. College football programs oftentimes have facilities that are more impressive than some NFL squads. In the video above, you can see just how impressed Wayne was with what he was seeing. “Oh, this the locker room? This the fucking locker room? C’mon man!” Wayne exclaimed. “It’ll be hard for a n-gga to feel bad after a loss up in here. I’m telling you that right now.” As you can also tell, Sanders was very happy with Wayne’s reaction. Sanders is doing his best to build something great at Colorado, and there is no doubt that the players will enjoy where they’re spending most of their time.

Overall, building a football program is not easy. However, Sanders did a great job doing so over at Jackson State. Now, he just has to go out and do it all over again at a school that has a few more resources. If he keeps going down this path, Colorado should be on pace for a phenomenal campaign.

Shannon Sharpe Gives His Honest Thoughts On Stetson Bennett

Shannon Sharpe was watching the National Championship game last night, just like millions of sports fans. As many of you know by now, the Georgia Bulldogs won their second-straight title. This came against the TCU Horned Frogs, who were awful throughout the game. In fact, the final score was 65-7.

Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett did a great job as he scored four touchdowns and over 300 yards. The 25-year-old is now graduating, and he could very well be on his way to the NFL. However, he has not received the hype you would expect from a two-time National Championship winner.

Shannon Sharpe Reacts

Overall, Bennett just isn’t that type of recruit. However, Sharpe does see some potential for the Georgia star. On Undisputed, Sharpe made it clear that other back-to-back champions haven’t had much NFL success. Although this is the case, he still thinks Bennett deserves an invitation to a team’s training camp.

“I don’t know if he’ll be drafted, but I do believe that based on his resume, someone will give him an opportunity to come into camp as a street free agent and see what he can do,” Sharpe said.

If Bennett does get drafted, it will likely be in the later rounds. This doesn’t necessarily mean defeat though, as Tom Brady became the best player ever despite being taken in the sixth round. Sure, Bennett is not Brady, however, he has proven himself to be a winner. In the NFL, being a leader who can win ball games goes a long way, and some teams out there could use that in the locker room.

Let us know where you think Bennett should go, in the comments section down below. Additionally, stay tuned to HNHH for more news from around the sports world.
