Michigan State Apologizes For Running Hitler Trivia On Jumbotron During Football Game

Michigan State has released an apology after a trivia question about Adolf Hitler was displayed on the jumbotron during the school’s football team’s matchup with inter-state rival Michigan on Saturday. The university’s associate athletic director Matt Larson addressed the incident in a statement, placing the blame on a third party.

“MSU is aware that inappropriate content by a third-party source was displayed on the videoboard prior to the start of tonight’s football game,” Larson said in a written statement. “We are deeply sorry for the content that was displayed, as this is not representative of our institutional values.” He added that the school plans to cut ties with the unnamed third-party source and “will implement stronger screening and approval procedures for all videoboard content in the future.”

Shortly after the trivia was displayed, pictures of it began circulating on social media. In the pictures, it’s clear that the question was displayed sometime before kickoff. “I’m not saying it’s the end of the world or anything but you can’t have Hitler on your pregame scoreboard,” one Twitter user wrote in response. Another added: “Hi. Alumnus here. This is Disgusting.” According to Uproxx, the trivia question stems from The Quiz Channel’s General Knowledge Trivia Quiz on YouTube. Mark Dantonio Returns To Michigan State Amid Mel Tucker Scandal

Michigan State legend Mark Dantonio has returned to the Spartans amid the scandal surrounding the football team. With head coach Mel Tucker suspended pending a sexual harassment investigation, Dantonio has returned to help pivot away “the MSU of old”. It’s the first time Dantonio has returned to the sidelines since his abrupt retirement in 2020. “Mark Dantonio is a man of integrity. Since his retirement, he’s continued to be a presence and a unifying force in the MSU community. When I called him, he selflessly offered to do whatever he could to help the football program,” athletic director Alan Haller told ESPN.

However, Dantonio’s return has raised some questions. Dantonio’s tenure as head coach coincided with allegations and accusations of its own. Back then, Michigan State was accused of mishandling sexual assault complaints leveled at athletes. Furthermore, Dantonio himself was accused of interfering in at least one case being investigated by the athletic department during his tenure. However, for the time being, he is being seen as Michigan State’s savior.

Michigan State Attempt To Focus Amid Scandal

Amid the chaos and uncertainty, Michigan State still has to play a season of football. They had started 2-0 with easy wins over Central Michigan and Richmond. However, now they must take on the hardest team on their non-conference slate. A visit from #8 Washington is on the books for the Spartans this weekend. Behind Michael Penix Jr., the Huskies have dispatched Boise State and Tulsa. This is not a team that Michigan State would want to face before their sideline chaos. However, this will likely be a battle between whether the Spartans’ defense or the Huskies’ rush defense can step up.

Dantonio will not lead the team on Saturday. That job will be left to interim head coach Harlon Barnett. However, it’s likely that there will be a level of deference to Dantonio, whom Barnett served under as an assistant. Barnett referred to Dantonio as a “calming presence” who would “aid [the team] in all aspects of operations.” Additionally, Barnett praised the addition of Dantonio to the coaching squad. “I’m glad he’s here. I love me some Coach D. That’s my guy.”

Michigan State To Host Penn State In Regular Season Finale At Ford Field

2022 was a season to forget for the Michigan State Spartans, finishing 5-7 in a major step back from their 11-2 2021 campaign. The 5-7 record included losses in all three of their rivalry games (Indiana, Michigan, and Penn State). Furthermore, long-time starting quarterback Payton Thorne opted to transfer, choosing to join Hugh Freeze at Auburn.

Meanwhile, Penn State is expected to vie for the Big Ten title this season. They have been building towards this point for a number of years and 2023 feels like the best year to do it. The Nittany Lions have a number of highly-regarded draft prospects, such as offensive tackle Olu Fashanu. Furthermore, they have a new quarterback in Drew Allar after the graduation of Sean Clifford. This could be Penn State’s year. This belief is exacerbated by the loss of major starters for both Michigan and Ohio State. However, both programs still remain at the top of the conference power rankings.

The first game between Michigan State and Penn State was played in 1914, with the fixture becoming an annual tradition in 1993 when Penn State joined the Big Ten. The two schools are the the oldest land grant colleges in the United States. Therefore, the rivalry trophy is thus known as the “Land Grand Trophy”. The all-time rivalry record is tied at 18-18-1. Furthermore, the teams are 5-5 in their last 10 matchups. However, Penn State has won three of the last four matchups.

Additionally, the 2023 edition of the game will get an all-star setting. As part of a broadcasting deal with NBC, the game will be played at Ford Field in Detroit. As per tradition, the game is the season finale for both schools. Furthermore, the game will serve as part of NBC’s Thanksgiving Weekend coverage, which will also feature a Lions-Packers game on Thanksgiving as well as the Michigan state football championships. The Spartans-Nittany Lions matchup will have a primetime slot on Black Friday (November 24). “We anticipate that the experience will be so much more than a football game for our Spartan faithful,” Michigan State AD Allen Haller said in a statement.
