A Gigantic Twerking Hologram, J Balvin, And Ryan Castro Perform ‘Nivel De Perreo’ At The 2022 MTV VMAs

J Balvin is one of the biggest stars in the world. He has a No. 1 single under his belt with the Cardi B and Bad Bunny collaboration “I Like It,” and the list of artists who get more streams than him on Spotify is a short one. Now his resume has gotten a tad more fleshed out, as he just performed at the 2022 MTV VMAs.

Balvin was joined by Ryan Castro to perform their collaboration “Nivel De Perreo.” With all due respect to Castro, though, the most notable guest of the performance was the giant twerking hologram that shook what its mama gave it throughout the song.

For this year’s ceremony, Balvin has a nomination, as his and Skrillex’s “In Da Getto” is up for Best Latin.

Aside from Balvin, also performing during this year’s show are Nicki Minaj, Jack Harlow (both of whom are also co-hosting alongside LL Cool J), Lizzo, Blackpink, Bad Bunny, Måneskin, Anitta, Panic! At The Disco, Kane Brown, Marshmello x Khalid, Snoop Dogg with Eminem, and 2022 MTV VMAs Global Icon Award recipients Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Lizzo Busts Out A Show-Stopping Medley Of ‘About Damn Time’ And ‘2 Be Loved’ At The 2022 MTV VMAs

Lizzo is having a moment right now. Her new album Special is her highest-charting so far, earning a peak at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, while “About Damn Time” was a multi-week chart-topper and a strong “song of the summer” contender (even if she wasn’t always so sure it would be the right lead single for Special). Now, she can put another feather in her cap as she’s fresh off a performance at the 2022 MTV VMAs.

Her performance started with a bit of “About Damn Time” before transitioning into her latest single, “2 Be Loved (Am I Ready),” all the while accompanied by a delightfully colorful light show behind her, complete with herself as a background dancer on the massive triangular video screen behind her.

Lizzo has some major nominations at this year’s show: She’s up for Artist Of The Year while “About Damn Time” is up for Song Of The Year. The track is also nominated for Best Pop and Video For Good.

Aside from Lizzo, also performing during this year’s show are Nicki Minaj, Jack Harlow (both of whom are also co-hosting alongside LL Cool J), Blackpink, Bad Bunny, Måneskin, Anitta, Panic! At The Disco, Kane Brown, Marshmello x Khalid, Snoop Dogg with Eminem, J Balvin, and 2022 MTV VMAs Global Icon Award recipients Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Jack Harlow Kicks Off The VMAs With Fergie And Their High-Flying Performance Of ‘First Class’

Jack Harlow opened the 2022 MTV VMAs with a literal performance of his hit song “First Class,” rapping as he entered the Prudential Center stage from a hallway mocked up to evoke the aisle of an airliner. Sitting in the seats were fellow stars like Lil Nas X and Chloe. But the surprises kept coming, as he was joined onstage by none other than Fergie, who blended in her hit “Glamorous” — which Harlow sampled for “First Class” — and finished with a crowd-pleasing call-and-response. In addition to performing, Jack’s co-hosting the show along with LL Cool J and Nicki Minaj and co-leads all nominees with Kendrick Lamar and Lil Nas X. They each have seven nominations.

Harlow has had a tremendous year leading up to the 2022 VMAs. In April, he acquired his first-ever solo No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “First Class,” which returned to the top of the chart twice. He followed up with his second album, Come Home, The Kids Miss You a month later, giving him his highest-charting album yet with a debut at No. 3. Meanwhile, when a pop culture faux pas incensed fans of ’90s R&B staple Brandy, Jack flipped her fiery response into an opportunity, performing alongside Brandy at the 2022 BET Awards.

Even with all that behind him, he’s got plenty to look forward to as well. In September, he’ll embark on his Come Home, The Kids Miss You Tour with City Girls, beginning in Nashville, TN on September 8, then finishing up in Atlanta, GA on October 16. He’s also set his sets on his next high-profile collaboration, revealing that he’s been manifesting a song with Andre 3000 “for a while” during an interview with Today.

Who Will Host The 2022 MTV VMAs?

The MTV VMAs awards show is happening this year on August 28th. The MTV Video Music Awards crowns the best music videos from artists of all genres and while the 2021 MTV VMAs was hosted by Doja Cat, the MTV VMAs 2022 actually has three different hosts. One is a familiar hosting face, and the other two are more eclectic choices that will make for a unique broadcast.

Who will host the 2022 MTV VMAs?

The three hosts for the VMAs in 2022 are LL Cool J, Nicki Minaj, and Jack Harlow. Harlow is an interesting choice, because along with Kendrick Lamar and Lil Nas X, he leads the way in the field with seven MTV VMAs nominations as well. Along with hosting duties, Minaj will be accepting the yearly MTV Video Vanguard Award, too. While Minaj and Harlow have never hosted an awards show of this magnitude before, LL Cool J has hosted the Grammys five times, so he should have no trouble helping them along.

The VMAs will also feature performances from Lizzo, Red Hot Chili Peppers, J Balvin, Harlow, Maneskin, Blackpink, Kane Brown, Marshmello with Khalid, and Panic! At The Disco, as well as Minaj and Harlow. There will also be pre-show performances from Dove Cameron, Yung Gravy, and Saucy Santana.

The 2022 MTV VMAs are on August 28 at 8 p.m. ET. Get full details on the award show here.

Jack Harlow, LL Cool J, And Nicki Minaj Will Emcee The 2022 VMAs

The 2022 MTV VMAs have been rolling out the announcements for nominees, performers, and Video Vanguard honorees all month. Today, we learn who will be hosting the show on August 28: Jack Harlow, LL Cool J, and Nicki Minaj. The press release makes it a point to say that they’ll emcee the event, “taking a more innovative and unique approach to the traditional ‘host’ gig.” That’s some intriguing wording and could mean that the show’s producers have thrown in a few surprises.

So far, the performers who have been announced include Anitta, BLACKPINK, J Balvin, Jack Harlow, Lizzo, Marshmello & Khalid, Nicki Minaj, and Panic! At The Disco. The nominations are led by Jack Harlow, Kendrick Lamar, and Lil Nas X with seven apiece, while Doja Cat and Harry Styles have six each. Other artists nominated for awards include Billie Eilish, Drake, Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, and The Weeknd, who are all nominated for five awards each.

In addition to her emceeing and performing duties, Nicki Minaj is set to be awarded the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award for her decade-plus of innovation at the forefront of the music video format.

The 2022 MTV Video Music Awards will air live from Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey at 8 pm ET on 8/28.

The 2022 VMAs Add Performers Blackpink, Jack Harlow, And Lizzo

With the MTV VMAs airing on August 28, MTV has been slowly revealing the performers to build hype for the show. The first batch was revealed earlier this month and included Anitta, J Balvin, and Khalid, while the latest group was announced today and features Blackpink, Jack Harlow, and Lizzo.

In addition to the performers, MTV previously announced the full list of nominees, which is led by Jack Harlow, Kendrick Lamar, and Lil Nas X, who have seven each. Artists of the Year include Bad Bunny, Drake, Ed Sheeran, Harry Styles, Jack Harlow, Lil Nas X, and Lizzo, while the coveted Video of the Year category sees Doja Cat, Drake, Ed Sheeran, Harry Styles, Lil Nas X, Olivia Rodrigo, and Taylor Swift nominated for their biggest videos of the year.

Of course, not everyone is excited about the award show. During an interview last year, Ed Sheeran noted that American award shows have “a horrible atmosphere” compared to their British counterparts. He blamed it on a sense of resentment driven by artists’ entourages, saying “It’s just lots of people wanting other people to fail and I don’t like that. It’s a really horrible atmosphere to be in. I always walk away feeling really sad, and I don’t like it.” Let’s hope this year’s VMAs can break that tradition.

MTV Unveils The First Batch Of 2022 VMAs Performers, Featuring J Balvin, Khalid, Anitta, And More

MTV Video Music Awards season is approaching. Last month, MTV unveiled the full list of nominations for the 2022 VMAs, which are set to go down on August 28. Now, what the broadcast will look like is starting to become more clear, as the first set of artists set to perform on the show was revealed today: Anitta, J Balvin, Marshmello with Khalid, and Panic! At The Disco. The show usually has a lot more performers than just a handful, so this first artist drop is surely just the start of what should shape up to be a worthwhile lineup.

It could be an even bigger night for Anitta than just her time on stage, as she’s also nominated for Best Latin with “Envolver.” In that category, she’s up against fellow performer Balvin and Skrillex’s “In Da Getto,” Balvin’s sole nomination. Meanwhile, Panic! At The Disco has a Best Alternative nomination with “Viva Las Vengeance.”

Elsewhere on the nomination side of things, Kendrick Lamar, Jack Harlow, and Lil Nas X are tied for having the most, as they’ve each racked up seven nods for this year’s show.
