Killer Mike Says ‘Michael’ Album is Part of a Trilogy

Killer Mike wants fans to know more of the Recording Academy’s Best Rap Album, Michael, is coming. Speaking with Apple Music during the Super Bowl weekend, Mike revealed there is two more editions of the album.

“It’s gonna be three Michaels,” Killer Mike said. “The first album we got to kinda take the nine-year-old to where I’ve grown into as an adult, but I wanna cut deeper. There’s deeper levels to go. We’re already plotting out what the next one’s gonna be. Me and Cuz Lightyear were in the studio with Mike WiLL the next night.”

Killer Mike Shares A Tender Reimagining Of ‘Motherless’ Featuring Robert Glasper And Eryn Allen Kane

Killer Mike’s sixth studio album Michael has been out for around four months now, but true to his independent spirit, the Atlanta rapper is still finding new ways to promote his most personal project to date. The latest is a live studio reinterpretation of standout track “Motherless” remixed by Grammy-winning jazz revivalist Robert Glasper. In the video they shared today, Mike, Glasper, and guest vocalist Eryn Allen Kane perform the tender remix in the recording studio, with Glasper’s gentle keys enhancing the loving tone of Mike’s ode to his late mom.

In a statement about the remix, Mike wrote:

Two years ago I was asked to get on a “Black Superhero” by Robert Glasper. The song was incredible and he’d go on to win a Grammy for that album. My only regret was that we weren’t in the same room together when we made it. So when talks of him remixing “MOTHERLESS” came up it was a no brainer — only this time we wanted to be in studio together along with Eryn Allen Kane.

Someone was smart enough to have cameras there capturing us making this tribute to my mother, Druzella Denise Clonts aka OG Mama Niecy and Rob’s mother, Kim Yvette Glasper. Performing this song is never easy. I wept every night on tour.

The outpouring of emotions has been part of healing. To all those who belong to Motherless Club I pray this helps and to all those who are lucky enough to have their mothers: call them!

The song has been a go-to for Mike: On Friday, he performed the track with Glasper and Kane on The Tonight Show.

Killer Mike, the renowned rapper and activist, excited fans with the announcement of his new album that is set to release in June. Despite not releasing any solo music until 2008 with I Pledge Allegiance to the Grind II, Killer Mike has become a major staple in the rap industry, with his 2012 album R.A.P Music being considered a classic. However, Killer Mike’s skills as a rapper should not be underestimated. He is ready to remind us just how skilled he is with the announcement of his new solo album, MICHAEL. The album will be released on June 16, following a 10-year solo music hiatus. While he has been consistently releasing music with longtime friend and collaborator EL-P under the moniker Run The Jewels, fans are excited to hear what Mike has in store for his new solo outing. Upon announcing the album, Mike dropped the single “Don’t Let The Devil.” It was a small taste of what was to come. Now, the rapper has released another track from the album called “Motherless.” Along with it, he has released a music video.

Killer Mike Speaks On Losing His Mother

Killer Mike gets emotional on his new track, “Motherless.” It’s another gospel-tinged track with beautiful vocals from Eryn Allen Kane and a smooth bassline. Just like with “Don’t Let The Devil,” listeners will be transported while they listen to the track. Lyrically, Mike speaks about the loss of his mother and how it has affected him. Throughout the track, he speaks about the things that he wishes he could tell her. However, he also says that he would give up his fame to have her back. “If God sent me back to normal to be next to you,” Mike raps. “I would gladly trade it all ’cause I be missin’ you.”

In addition to the new single and video, Mike announced that he will be embarking on a solo tour in support of the album. “Let everyone know GOOD NEWS IS COMING!” Mike said in a social media post. “I’m excited to announce The High & Holy Tour. My choir, The Midnight Revival, and I will perform songs from my new album MICHAEL, as well as classic hits from R.A.P. Music, PLEDGE, and more.
