Who Is Luh Tyler? Meet The ‘Back Flippin’ Rapper

Rap has a long history of teen stars — the creation of the genre is largely credited to a group of New York teenagers throwing house parties in the Bronx — and the latest just might be one of its biggest yet. Luh Tyler is just 17 years old and already signed a deal with Atlantic Records — a deal that has already produced one of the better-received projects of the year — and been dubbed the “coolest rapper/teenager in America/rap” by Pitchfork and Stereogum, the “most exciting rapper in Florida” by Complex, and the “feel-good story in rap” by GQ.

Hailing from Tallahassee, Tyler — not to be confused with the similarly-named Luh Kel — creates low-stakes but engaging music supported by breezy rhymes that don’t so much detail the circumstances of his upbringing as his immediate surroundings at any given moment. He makes the basics sound fly — like a teen Curren$y — but what sets him apart from his contemporaries from the sunshine state is his insistence on defining his existence by good times rather than trauma.

Perhaps no song better exemplifies this than “Back Flippin,” one of his standout tracks and the one that has become his calling card. Then, there’s “Law & Order,” his most successful track to date, built on a sample of the theme from the long-running procedural. Tyler built on the momentum from these two tracks on his debut My Vision with songs like “Stand On Biz” and following up with “First Show,” and if he can keep it up, he might just remain the coolest well beyond the next three years he’s still a teen.

Florida Rapper Luh Tyler Follows Debut Mixtape With “First Show” Single

The weekend is quickly coming to a close, but we’ve got one more song for you to stream. This one is from Florida’s Luh Tyler and is called “First Show” with production from Just Call Me Chris. The lyricism is impressive, as expected for the rapidly rising star. It arrives shortly after his debut mixtape, My Vision, landed on streaming platforms earlier this year.

On that, he connected with names like Anti Da Menace, BabyTron, Loe Shimmy, Trapland Pat, and NoCap. The deluxe cut brought with it an even more impressive collaborator in the form of Lil Uzi Vert on “Ransom.” This weekend’s release finds Tyler operating solo, confidently bragging about the feats he’s managed to achieve in such a short time. “They like, ‘Damn, boy, you got your own flow, you on some different shit’ / This hoe getting my nerves, I need a different bitch,” he quickly rhymes on the chorus.

Luh Tyler is Back with “First Show”

Later, on the first verse, the 17-year-old continues to impress with his quick-wittedness. “At my first show, I might have your bitch front row / White bitch, look like Elsa, had to let her go,” Tyler raps. “I been kissing Mary Jane, you can smell the odor / Young, steady getting wiser, as I’m getting older,” he assures listeners of his ever-growing skill.

He’s been moving with nothing short of consistency in 2023, sharing “Dennis,” a solo effort, as well as joint efforts like “Can’t Move Wrong” and “Backstreet” with Trapland Pat, “Fat Racks Pt. 2” alongside BabyTron, and “Face” in tandem with BurnaMaleik. Luh Tyler Goes ‘Behind The Video’ For His ‘Law & Order’ Visual

Don’t be fooled by his age: 17-year-old rapper Luh Tyler is making a name for himself in Florida’s thriving rap scene. With two viral tracks, “Fat Racks” and “Law and Order,” to his name already, he’s off to a solid start in what could be a lengthy career. The teenage recording artist joins the likes of NLE Choppa, DDG, Yung Baby Tate, and 22Gz to drop by the Uproxx Studios for a Behind The Video breakdown.

Released late last year, the MontanaShotYa-directed video has already garnered 13 million views on YouTube. When asked by our very own Cherise Johnson if he used to watch the show in which the track is named after, he responds, “I did, but I wasn’t a big fan of it or anything,” confessing, “I just liked the beat,” used in the show’s opening credits. In the past, he did share a freestyle to the beat.

Throughout the video, several notable places in his hometown of Tallahassee, Florida, including Florida A&M University, also known as FAMU. Tyler revealed that several parts of the video were captured during the school’s homecoming, saying, “Everybody pops up in the city for homecoming,” a cultural tradition that his family has been taking him to for years.

Another cultural spot highlighted in the video is the restaurant Gutherie’s. When asked what first-time visitors should order, he recommended “a Gutherie’s box with chicken tender, fries, and Gutherie’s sauce.”

DJ Scheme, Danny Towers, & Ski Mask The Slump God Are Swimming In “Florida Water” With Luh Tyler: New Single

Before you turn your attention to the Super Bowl (and Rihanna’s Halftime show) this evening, we have a hot new single for all hip-hop heads to check out. On Friday (February 10), DJ Scheme and Danny Towers came together to finally drop “Florida Water,” which sees them link up with Ski Mask The Slump God. Additionally, the pair is joined by Luh Tyler to complete the joint effort.

For the producer’s part, he put together a low-note piano bassline for the three lyricists to coast over. Throughout his lyrics, Towers markedly taunts haters, reminding them that he’s not afraid to throw them in the shark-infested ocean that separates his home state and Cuba. Following him is the “Back Flippin” artist, whose bars are all about securing the bag.

Finally, Ski Mask closes things out on “Florida Waters.” As per usual, his emphatic ad-libs and signature animated flow steal the show, leaving listeners desperate for more from every artist involved. While we don’t have release dates for any other upcoming single, we do know the accompanying music video is due out sometime this week.

As noted in a press release, this song, in particular, marks a big moment for DJ Scheme. He previously made waves at the end of 2020 with his debut album, FAMILY. That 17-track effort saw him collaborating with names like Jackboy, Lil Yachty, Ty Dolla $ign, and the late Lil Keed.

Stream DJ Scheme’s “Florida Water” single with Danny Towers, Ski Mask, and Luh Tyler on Spotify or Apple Music below. Afterward, tell us your thoughts on the new track in the comments. Additionally, you can find more release recommendations on our Fire Emoji playlist update here.

Quotable Lyrics:

Know that I’m from Florida, in that water like a Chia Pet
And I’m with my dog like it’s Carter, where my gadget at?
What’s up in my pocket? It’s a thirty like a Percocet
Who that in my spliff? Never mind, I’ll be considerate
