Fans were forced to choose which 1D star was right and which was wrong. Zayn Malik and Liam Payne were two of the most polarizing members during post-1D years. Payne’s tragic death on October 17, however, has put things into perspective for Zayn Malik. Zayn, as well as Louis Tomlinson, took to social media to pay tribute to their former band member and “brother.”

Zayn Malik posted a photo of him and Payne during their One Direction days. The two teens appear to be leaning against each other while sleeping in a car. Zayn then delves into the complications and the tragic dynamics of his relationship with Payne. “Even though you were younger than me,” he wrote. “You were always more sensible than me. You were headstrong, opinionated, and gave no f**ks about telling people when they were wrong.” Zayn Malik then noted that he appreciated the ways in which Payne challenged him, even if he didn’t show it in the moment. “Even though we butted heads because of this a few times, I always secretly respected you for it,” he added.

Liam Payne Was Praised By His Former Band Mates

Zayn closed out his tribute to Liam Payne by referring to the late singer as his brother. Through all of the adversity, the two men remain bonded. “[I] can’t explain to you,” he concluded. “What I’d give to just give you a hug one last time and say goodbye to you properly. Tell you that I loved and respected you dearly.” Zayn wasn’t the only One Direction star who felt the need to speak up after Liam Payne’s untimely death. Louis Tomlinson also took to Instagram to praise Payne and the impact the singer left on life.

Liam Payne and Tomlinson also had personal issues, according to an interview the former gave in 2021. He claimed that he and Tomlinson actually hated each other while they were in One Direction, and it was only after the band broke up that they became close. Tellingly, Louis Tomlinson also referred to Payne as his brother. “I wish I got chance to say goodbye and tell you one more time how much I loved you,” he wrote on IG. “Payno, my boy, one of my best friends, my brother, I love you mate. The circumstances surrounding Payne’s untimely death are still being sorted out. TMZ reported that the singer fell from the third floor of his hotel room in Argentina. The outlet also alleges that he was acting erratically in the lobby, and had to be carried to his room shortly before his fatal fall. Regardless of the circumstances, the music world has been mourning Liam Payne’s death.

Juicy J, who collaborated with Liam Payne on the 2016 single “You,” tweeted his condolences. “R.I.P. Liam Payne,” he wrote. “Wow I can’t believe it prayers up for the family.” A similarly heartbroken thought was shared by Flavor Flav, who was shocked to learn the singer had died at such a young age. “R.I.P. to Liam Payne,” the Public Enemy rapper tweeted. “Much too young.” Payne was the One Direction singer who leaned into R&B and hip hop the most throughout his solo career. Zedd, who appeared on Liam Payne’s only solo album, LP1, celebrated the singer for his musical legacy. “R.I.P. Liam,” he wrote. “I can’t believe this is real. Absolutely heartbreaking.”

Liam Payne admitted hesitation to break away from the pop-rock of One Direction in his own music. He told Entertainment Weekly that he loved hip hop music, though, and cited Migos and Lil Uzi Vert as some of his favorite artists. “I listen to a lot of rap music,” he asserted. “It’s important to do something that you want to do, but you can’t forget your fan base, you can’t forget your roots.” Payne’s aforementioned song with Quavo was a top 10 Billboard smash in 2017, so fans didn’t seem to mind.

Payne reportedly fell off a hotel balcony to his death on October 16. The singer was staying in Argentina, and TMZ claims to have obtained photos of his body in the immediate aftermath. The footage that has left fans shocked, however, is the Snapchat Story that Liam Payne posted just one hour before his death.

In a deleted Snapchat Story, Payne updated fans from his Argentina hotel. He announced that he was having a “lovely day” with girlfriend Kate Cassidy. He also detailed some of the activities he had planned. The couple intended to go horse riding and play polo. Cassidy, who appears in the Snapchat, can also be heard joking about their lazy habits. The actress/influencer claimed they slept in until 1 pm, and Payne playfully refuted the notion they are “losers.” The One Direction star also posted photos of his breakfast and various parts of the hotel. “Happy I got some time away,” he wrote in the caption of one scenic shot.

Liam Payne Claimed To Be Having A ‘Lovely Day’

Liam Payne’s Snapchat Stories are a far cry from the TMZ reports about his behavior. The outlet spoke to several eyewitnesses who claimed the singer was acting “aggressive” in the lobby. He allegedly broke a laptop and was carried back to his hotel room. The outlet further alleges that a 911 call was made due to alarming behavior by a guest. Payne was not mentioned, but the timing of the call aligns with the claims of his disruptive behavior.

It’s also worth noting the presence of Kate Cassidy in the Snapchat Stories. TMZ reported that Cassidy left Argentina on October 14, meaning she was not present when the videos of her were posted. Page Six theorizes that Liam Payne was posting videos and photos taken from the preceding weekend in the time leading up to his death. The outlet claims that the singer fell to his death shortly after 5 pm. By 5:30, the aforementioned Snaps were removed from his Main Stories and archived under “Spotlight.”

Liam Payne Was Found Dead At Age 31

Liam Payne was forthright about his personal struggles in the years leading up to his death. During a 2021 appearance on the Diary of a CEO podcast, the singer admitted to struggling with alcoholism and suicidal thoughts. These issues surfaced while he was still a member of One Direction. “I was worried how far my rock bottom was going to be,” he explained to the host. “Where’s rock bottom for me?
