DaBaby And Megan Thee Stallion Lead The 2021 BET Awards Nominations

The 2021 BET Awards have been announced and once again, DaBaby leads the field — although this year, there’s a little twist. Whereas last year, he had 12 nominations by himself, this year, he’s tied with Megan Thee Stallion with seven nominations each after what was an interesting and relatively slow year for hip-hop thanks to the pandemic shutdown. Behind them is another tie; Cardi B and Drake both received five nominations apiece. The BET Awards will air Sunday, June 27 at 8 pm ET/PT from the Microsoft Theater in LA. See below for the full list of music nominations.

Gucci Mane Recalls His ‘Verzuz’ Battle With Jeezy Was ‘Tense But It Was Real’

Gucci Mane admits his contentious Verzuz battle with Jeezy was “tense but real” in a new profile of the trap godfather for Billboard. Looking back on the night and the provocative goading the two rappers engaged in, Gucci expresses his appreciation for the opportunity. “It was a good step forward,” he says. “For us to do that and for nothing bad to happen, that was great.”

Gucci also spends some of the profile addressing his outsized impact on the rap game compared to the amount of credit he’s received for influencing some of the biggest names in rap — including, Future, Migos, Nicki Minaj, and Young Thug. “Is the true story of what really happened with all these artists and how I helped them going to come to light?” he wonders. “There are some interesting stories, and it was so long ago that they get lost. Nobody ever really told the true story. [Artists] want to tell you what made them look good… I don’t get the credit.”

Elsewhere, though, he acknowledges the possibility that he won’t receive those accolades in his time. “If you wait on [the world] to give some credit, either they’re going to do it when you’re dead or when somebody has fallen off and they’re not relevant anymore,” he reflects. “They never give it to the person when they’re still in the moment.”

Quavo Irons Hundred Dollar Bills With Migos “Straightenin” Spray

With the release of their infectious new single “Straightenin,” it’s officially Migos season. Their first official single of 2021 marked an impressive return for the Atlanta rap trio, and years after Culture II and the group members’ polarizing solo albums, excitement for a new Migos project is once again at an all-time high.

Leading up to Culture III, Quavo appears to be celebrating the success of “Straightenin” in one of his latest social media flexes. In a recent post to Instagram, the QUAVO HUNCHO artist is seen standing poolside behind an ironing board as he goes through his a stack of money and irons hundred-dollar bills one by one. The already odd flex is hilariously accentuated with Quavo’s use of a custom spray can that reads “MIGOS STRAIGHTENIN SRAY.”

“Ya Bankroll Out Of Order? Are U Losing Ya Fold Cuz The Money Got Swole,” Quavo writes in the caption for his latest Instagram flex. “Try STRAIGHTENIN Spray Today! #Culture3 6/11 @migos”

Whether or not Migos actually have plans on selling the “Straightenin” Spray is yet to be seen, but it would definitely be a highly sought-after merchandise item for collectors of Hip-Hop memorabilia.

Culture III is set to finally arrive on Friday, June 11, so stay tuned for more Migos-related news.

Zeina, Rising R&B Artist, Drops Moody “Teach”

While it’s been four years since Zeina’s breakout EP Odd One Out was released, fans have been treated to a handful of singles since the release. “Teach” marks the 9th single and serves as a continuation of a new artistic direction for the singer.

“Teach” takes note from its moody and atmospheric predecessors “Can’t Trust U” and “Consequences” with a simple beat driven by vocal samples and an expanding drum section. Floating through the empty space of the track, Zeina’s elegant melodies empower her sexuality with a variety of metaphors and imagery depicting her desires.

The accompanying video, which premiered last Friday, accentuates this empowerment with Zeina herself front and center. If the song itself wasn’t enough to convince you of Zeina’s encouragement of female sexual expression, the video is sure to set the message straight. Impressively accumulating over 146,000 views in just under a week, the video focuses around Zeina, her flaming nails, and her overwhelming confidence.

While there is no news of an extended release coming soon, “Teach” and the preceding list of single releases are surely enough to hold fans down in the meantime. If you’re looking for similar sounds to drive Summer 2021, check out our R&B SEASON playlist for more.

Quotable Lyrics:

I’ll teach you how to kiss it, teach you how to touch it
Teach how to lick it, no one else’s business
I’ll teach how to kiss it, hit it like you miss it (Hit it like)
Let me be your healing, beat it like you’re hurting

LeBron James Speaks Out After Russell Westbrook Popcorn Shower

Russell Westbrook has been one of the best players in the Eastern Conference this season although he is still wildly disrespected by opposing fans. Perhaps the most obvious instance of this was last night as he was playing in Philadelphia in the first round of the NBA playoffs. While coming out of the game due to an injury, Westbrook had popcorn poured on him by a fan.

This ultimately enraged Westbrook and rightfully so. After all, no one wants to have popcorn poured all over their head, especially when they are in a vulnerable position. Since the incident, many have been trying to figure who the fan was, and now, even LeBron James is getting involved.

“By the way WE AS THE PLAYERS wanna see who threw that popcorn on Russ while he was leaving the game tonight with a injury!! There’s cameras all over arenas so there’s no excuse! Cause if the shoe was on the other foot…” LeBron wrote. Even Westbrook was livid about the whole thing as he said “The amount of disrespect, the amount of fans just doing whatever the f*ck they want to do. It’s just out of pocket.

Both players certainly have a point here as some NBA fans take one too many liberties while in the stands. At the end of the day, the players are human too, and treating them in this way should be grounds for a substantial ban from the arena in question.

Joyner Lucas Returns With “Back In Blood Remix”

Fans likely remember the era where Joyner Lucas was absolutely bodying freestyles, and today, the lyricist has taken a moment to return to his roots. Queuing up “Back In Blood” for the occasion, Joyner uses the opportunity to not only showcase his first-rate technical prowess, but to air some of the grievances that have been piling up.

“They say, “J, I miss when you was broke, way before all the fame and glory,” he spits. “‘Money changed you, it made you corny / The material things just bore me / You’re no different than all of these industry ni*gas, I thought you were special and awesome / Now you sellin’ your soul and just hopin’ on records with anyone, ni*ga, you lost it.”

Perhaps in direct retaliation to some of the misconceptions, he proceeds to let fly some of his signature flows, though not at the expense of his punchlines. “Please shut the fuck up anytime I bring somebody real around,” he raps. “You versus me, ni*ga? That’s like a whale pushin’ a seal around.”

Check out Joyner’s long-awaited return to the freestyle game with the “Back In Blood Remix,” and sound off if you think he needs to come through and drop a good-old-fashioned mixtape over previously-released beats.

QUOTABLE LYRICS

They say, “J, I miss when you was broke
Way before all the fame and glory
Money changed you, it made you corny”
The material things just bore me
You’re no different than all of these industry ni*gas, I thought you were special and awesome
Now you sellin’ your soul and just hopin’ on records with anyone ni*ga, you lost it
I miss when you made music that I could relate to ’cause all of your new shit ain’t thoughtful
When you gon’ make some new music with Marshall?
When you gon’ pull some new shit out the arsenal?

Soulja Boy Says He Was The First Rapper With An Iced-Out G-Shock After Kid Cudi Shows His

If you’re in the rap game and you’ve ever considered yourself a trendsetter, it’s time to get off of your high horse because, in all actuality, Soulja Boy probably started your wave. The 30-year-old rapper has been on a rampage as of late, reminding folks about all he’s accomplished as such a decorated artist in the business. Among his claims, Big Draco has claimed to have been the first rapper on YouTube, the first rapper to go viral, the first rapper to eat Fanta Jello, and more. Now, he’s asserting himself as the first rapper to ever ice out his G-Shock watch after Kid Cudi showed off his own bedazzled timepiece.

This week, Kid Cudi found his old G-Shock watch and decided to spice it up, taking a trip to the jeweler and getting pink diamonds all over it. The hip-hop icon didn’t claim to be the first to have iced out his G-Shock, but Soulja Boy took the opportunity to claim credit for the trend, sharing receipts that he may have been the initiator of this one too.

“I was the first rapper with the iced out g-shock,” wrote Draco on Twitter shortly after Kid Cudi’s video went viral. If there’s one thing about Soulja Boy, you know he’s been keeping receipts for the last decade and he’s ready to pull them out.

What do you think he’ll take credit for next? Make sure to read our latest interview with Soulja Boy: “Soulja Boy Everything: The ‘She Make It Clap’ Rapper Dives Into Getting His Credit, Drake, Bow Wow & Elon Musk.”

Jayson Tatum Debuts The Air Jordan 36

Over the last year, Jordan Brand athletes have been sporting the Air Jordan 35 during NBA games. Perhaps the two most popular athletes to do so are Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks and Jayson Tatum of the Boston Celtics. Tatum has come through with some great colorways of the Jordan 35 over the past year and Jumpman has entrusted him with helping to grow the shoe and make it a top-tier option for aspiring ballplayers.

Every single year, Jumpman drops a brand new silhouette and 2021 is poised to be no different. In fact, during Game Two against the Brooklyn Nets, Tatum got to wear the Air Jordan 36, making him the first NBA player to wear the shoe during a game. As you can see in the photos below, the shoe is a mid-top and the initial colorway is black, purple, and orange.

Overall, it is a pretty unique model and just like most new Jumpman silhouettes, we’re sure it will be polarizing for a few months prior to its release. For now, however, no release information has been given, so keep it locked to HNHH for all of the latest updates.

In the meantime, let us know what you think of this new model, in the comments below.
