RZA Compares DMX’s Raw & Real Energy To Ol’ Dirty Bastard

There are few emcees that have brought authenticity like DMX, and Ol’ Dirty Bastard was one of them. While they are two vastly different artists, they are both Rap icons who were never shamed into being silenced about the struggles in their journeys. What you saw was what you got, and it’s unfortunate that we lost two of the most real, and talented, artists to ever pick up a mic.

RZA reflected on DMX’s legacy during his recent conversation Ebro Darden on Apple Music. The filmmaking Wu-Tang icon spoke about his “though-provoking” film Nobody and the return of Wu-Tang: An American Saga‘s second season, but he took a moment to walk down memory lane with X and ODB.

“The first time I heard him was on the radio, with ‘Where My Dawgs At?’ That was ripping through New York on HOT97…and I knew automatically that it was a real dude on the mic,” said RZA. “I don’t like to compare artist to artist, but if I was to compare energy as far as realness and rawness, I’d have to compare him to ODB.”

“It was real, it wasn’t fabricated, he continued. “When I had the chance to meet the brother, his spirit, his purity, it’s just pure. I just caught a spine tingle right there just thinking about his purity.” Rest in peace to ODB and DMX. Check out RZA and Ebro below.

Cordae Announces “Just Until” EP Featuring Q-Tip & Young Thug Arrives This Week

He’s been hard at work in the studio and just to whet our appetites, Cordae is dropping off an EP. The former YBN member has been forging ahead without his crew, although they each have repeatedly stated that they still see one another as brothers. As Cordae has been shaping his own Rap career, the buzzing emcee hasn’t been steadily releasing new music like his fellow artists; Cordae has opted to take a bit more time crafting his next album and it looks as if it’s on the way.

Earlier today (April 20), Cordae delivered his own 4/20 news, albeit it didn’t have anything to do with lighting up. He shared on his Instagram that his new EP, Just Until, will be arriving this week.

Tomorrow at Midnight [red devil smiling emoji].” Cordae even gave us the tracklist to his four-pack project and hosts two features that some artists could only beg for.

Check out the tracklist below and let us know if you’re looking forward to hearing Cordae’s Just Until.

Ma’Khia Bryant Shooting: 16-Year-Old Killed By Cops After Reportedly Calling For Help

Fresh on the heels of Derek Chauvin’s guilty verdict for the murder of George Floyd, there has been news out of Ohio regarding a police-involved shooting death of a teenager. Columbus police are under scrutiny after Paula Bryant told local reporters that police officers shot and killed her 16-year-old daughter (some reports state 15-years-old), Ma’Khia Bryant, just hours ago (April 20).

Details regarding the shooting remain scarce at this time, but some are claiming that Ma’Khia called the cops because she was fearful that she was about to be jumped by a group of girls.

Reports state that dispatch received a call about an attempted stabbing and arrived on the scene at 4:30 p.m. Reports of shots fired occurred at 4:45 p.m. “Ma’Khia was named after a male prophet in the Bible. She was a very loving, peaceful little girl,” said her mother. “She was an honor roll student and um, Ma’Khia had a mothery nature about her. She promoted peace and that’s something that I always want to be remembered.”

There have been speculative reports about this case in its first hours. Some stated that witnesses at the scene claimed Ma’Khia was holding a knife to defend herself against a group of girls who were supposed to have arrived to jump her. Ma’Khia allegedly called the police for help and when officers saw her with a knife, they reportedly opened fire. There have also been reports that Ma’Khia was shot in the chest four times.

Videos of angry residents at the scene have circulated, including one where responding officers can be heard yelling, “Blue Lives Matter.”

A crowd of protesters has gathered outside of Ma’Khia’s home. Her first name has been mistakenly reported on and used in hashtags as “Makiyah.”

Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther tweeted, “This afternoon a young woman tragically lost her life. We do not know all of the details. There is body-worn camera footage of the incident. We are working to review it as soon as possible. BCI is on the scene conducting an independent investigation as they do with all CPD-involved shootings.”

“We will share information that we can as soon as it becomes available. I’m asking for residents to remain calm and allow BCI to gather the facts.” This story is developing and we will keep you updated as more information arrives.

Jhene Aiko Aiko Celebrates 4/20 With A Well-Timed Video For ‘Tryna Smoke’

Since releasing her Chilombo album in early 2020, Jhene Aiko has steadily released music videos for its various songs. Now she’s finally getting around to dropping one for “Tryna Smoke,” which she did in honor of 4/20. It finds Aiko surrounded by some friends, including Big Sean, as they gather in a That 70’s Show-esque circle to prepare for a smoke session. After testing out the weed, Aiko and friends spark up to enjoy the rest of their night.

Previous Chilombo tracks to get the video treatment include “Born Tired,” “10K Hours,” ‘Speak,” and “Summer 2020.” The 20-track album — which grew to be 29 songs after a deluxe reissue — seemed to be her most well-received effort, landing her a trio of Grammy nominations earlier this year. The album was featured in Best Progressive R&B Album and Album Of The Year categories, while “Lightning & Thunder,” her collaboration with John Legend, was nominated for Best R&B Performance.

On top of that, Aiko recently celebrated the tenth anniversary of her breakout mixtape, Sailing Soul(s), by re-releasing it to streaming services with additional songs. She also joined Ty Dolla Sign, Saweetie, and Big Sean for recent collaborations over the past few months.

Joe Budden Jokes That Tory Lanez Wants Mal’s “JBP” Seat

With all the reports of in-fighting, Tory Lanez is shooting his shot for a spot on The Joe Budden Podcast—jokingly, of course. We’ve recently reported that co-hosts Rory Farrell and Jamil “Mal” Clay were noticeably absent from a few episodes, and Budden addressed the controversy by saying the group of friends was dealing with personal issues.

Later Budden shared that he approached Rory with the opportunity to go to therapy, and it has been suggested that he accepted the invitation. As Budden and Co. get their longstanding friendships back on track, Tory Lanez hopped on Budden’s Instagram Live session with an offer of his own.

“Tory Lanez, no get out of here,” Budden quipped when he saw the singer-rapper in his comments. Then he said with a laugh, “See look, even if I say your name, the blogs are gonna attack me now.” He seemed to read Tory’s next message. “You wanna come sit in Mal’s seat. What kind of friend would I be? [laughs] That would be funny though, but…nah, it wouldn’t be funny [laughs].”

Undeniably, Lanez would turn things up but we’re not sure Mal is completely ready to let someone else move into his spot. Check out the clip below and read Drake’s recent funny take on his “beef” with Rory.

Biden Speaks On Chauvin Verdict, Says Lives Of Black Men “Must Be Valued”

Following the revelation of the Derek Chauvin verdict, President Joe Biden was on the phone with George Floyd’s family. President Biden has been vocal about this case, and like the rest of America, along with a global audience, has awaited the results. Chauvin has been convicted of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter, and now, America’s president has addressed the country.

“I can’t breathe. Those were George Floyd’s last words,” said Biden. “We can’t let those words die with him. We have to keep hearing those words. We must not turn away. We can’t turn away.”

“This can be a moment of significant change,” he added. “Nothing can ever bring their brother, their father back, but this can be a giant step forward in the march towards justice in America,” Biden said. “For so many people it seems like it took a unique and extraordinary convergence of factors. A brave young woman with a smartphone camera. A crowd that was traumatized.”

“Black men, in particular, have been treated throughout the course of our history as less than human. Their lives must be valued in…our nation. Full stop,” the president stated. While speaking with Floyd’s family, Biden can be heard on the phone telling them, “We were watching every second of this… We’re all so relieved.”

Check out video clips of Biden’s speech and his conversation with the Floyd family below.

Pacman Da Gunman & Icewear Vezzo Team Up On “Did That”

The West Coast is thriving right now. The current wave of artists emerging from California has been putting on for Los Angeles and beyond in their own way as they usher in a new era of hip-hop. However, many of them aren’t just up-and-comers who had one hot single. It’s a slew of legends who’ve played a role in propping up the underground scene and helping put a spotlight on it.

Pacman Da Gunman is known for his affiliation to Nipsey Hussle but his latest releases have proved that he stands on his own two. This week, Pacman connected with Icewear Vezzo for a chilling new banger titled, “Did That.” The banger brings the two rappers together as they discuss authenticity and resilience in both the street and the rap game.

There are a fair number of siblings active in the music industry today: Chance The Rapper and Taylor Bennet; D Smoke and SiR; Chloe x Halle; VanJess. Then there’s Young Thug and his brother Unfoonk, who joined forces for the track “Real,” off the former’s newly released album Slime Language 2. The song has become one of the fan favorites off the project. And now there’s a music video, which begins with Unfoonk being released from jail and returning home, where he gets back to recording music. Thug eventually joins him for a makeshift studio session, kicking off what turns out to be a nice display of brotherly love.

The video for “Real” is the second that’s been released since Slime Language 2 arrived last Friday. The first was the one for “Ski,” in which Thug and Gunna threw a lavish pool party, with appearances from Swae Lee, Nav, Seattle Seahawks’ wide-receiver DK Metcalf, and fellow YSL members T-Shyne, Strick, and Lil Duke.
