The holiday season is just around the corner and with the holiday season comes the tradition of watching Christmas movies for many. Sure, you could watch Elf for the 500th time, but if you’re looking for something old to look at with new eyes, check out some of these holiday flicks featuring hip-hop artists or hip-hop songs on their soundtracks.

Note: Most films mentioned here are available on many streaming sites, but will likely vary based on your location.

Hip-Hop Family Christmas (2021): Featuring Ne-Yo, Keri Hilton, Redman, and more, this recent hit tells the story of one of hip-hop’s most famous fictional families using a live Christmas TV special to fix their image in the wake of recent negative press coverage.  (Bonus: a made-for-TV special, Hip-Hop Family Christmas Wedding dropped a year later in 2022 and is available on many streaming platforms.)

The Sound of Christmas (2022): Ne-Yo also has a lead role in this holiday flick about a nanny who develops complex feelings about the millionaire that she begins to nanny for right before Christmas.

A New Diva’s Christmas Carol (2022): Ashanti stars in this modern-day twist on Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” as a once-famous songstress turned harsh judge on a reality competition show who is visited by three spirits of past, present, and future who try to show her the real meaning of Christmas- and love.

Miracles Across 125th Street (2021): Featuring Akon, Nick Cannon, Lil Kim, and more, this film tells the story of a troubled rapper who returns to his family’s Harlem church on Christmas Eve to connect with his past and hopefully work towards a better future.

Friday After Next (2002): Ice Cube stars in the third edition of the famous franchise, this time saving their Christmas by taking on the thief that stole his and Day-Day’s (Mike Epps) Christmas presents and rent money.

Dancing Through the Snow (2023): Ludacris stars in this family-friendly feature about a single father who through a turn of events, rediscovers Christmas magic with his young daughter.

Fred Claus (2007): Ludacris makes another holiday film appearance, this time as a record-spinning elf DJ in this family comedy about Fred Claus (played by Vince Vaughn), Santa’s older brother, who is forced to move to the North Pole to help Santa and the elves prepare for Christmas in exchange for cash.

This Christmas (2007): This holiday movie’s soundtrack features Chris Brown, B2K, Jordin Sparks, TLC’s famous holiday hit “Sleigh Ride,” and more.

Die Hard (1988): In the past few years, society has come to the consensus that Die Hard is indeed a Christmas movie. The film features a holiday-themed intro by Run-DMC.

The Best Man Holiday (2013): This holiday-themed sequel features John Legend, Ne-Yo, Monica, Mary J Blige, and more on its soundtrack.

Darius Jackson Accuses Actress KeKe Palmer of Physical Abuse

KeKe Palmer has found herself entangled in a bitter legal battle with her ex-boyfriend, Darius Jackson. Last month, Palmer was granted sole custody of their 10-month-old son, Leo, along with a restraining order against Jackson, following allegations of assault.

However, the drama has taken a new twist as Darius Jackson has now accused KeKe Palmer of being the aggressor in their tumultuous relationship. Legal documents obtained by RadarOnline.com reveal Jackson’s claims of physical abuse against the actress and his demand for the dismissal of the restraining order.

The documents, filed in Los Angeles on Friday, outline several alleged incidents to support Jackson’s accusations of abuse. According to Jackson, KeKe Palmer, whose real name is Lauren, has been the aggressor for a significant portion of their relationship.

One incident mentioned in the filing occurred on August 20, 2021, where Jackson claims Palmer punched him in the face during a birthday party. Jackson also accused Palmer of grabbing his arms, punching him, and bombarding him with over 200 phone calls.

Another alleged incident took place on October 24, 2021, where Jackson claims Palmer violently gripped his arm to prevent him from leaving her house. On November 17, 2021, after Jackson declined to spend the night with her, Palmer reportedly called him over 200 times and sent over 50 emails.

The filing further details instances where Jackson claims Palmer physically attacked him, leaving marks on his body. Allegations include being punched and attacked by choking and hitting. Additionally, Jackson accuses Palmer of berating him with derogatory names such as a ‘b—-,’ a ‘punk a–,’ and a ‘loser.’

These recent accusations come after Palmer was granted a temporary restraining order against Jackson, citing domestic violence and providing security footage screenshots as evidence. The footage captured moments of physical aggression from Jackson towards Palmer.

Oprah Reveals Producers for ‘The Color Purple’ Remake Wanted Beyoncé or Rihanna in the Film

The Color Purple, dubbed a “bold new take,” is getting ready to make its Christmas Day career. In a new cover story in The Hollywood Reporter, Oprah revealed producers pushed for Beyoncé or Rihanna to be part of the cast.

“If you were doing this film for $30 or $40 million, the interest in the cast would be very different,” Oprah said. “Once the film moved to $90 to $100 million, then everybody wants us to bring Beyoncé. ‘Can you get Beyoncé or can you get Rihanna?’ So we’re sitting in a room saying, ‘Listen, we love Beyoncé. We love Rihanna, but there are other actors who can do this job.’”

Oprah also revealed it would be nearly impossible for Beyoncé to be a part, citing “she is going to be busy this year.”

Warner Bros. Pictures announced a “bold new take on the beloved classic” The Color Purple. The forthcoming film is directed by Blitz Bazawule and produced by Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders, and Quincy Jones.

The film will star Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, H.E.R., Danielle Brooks, Halle Bailey, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, and Fantasia Barrino in her major motion picture debut.

The screenplay is by Marcus Gardley, based on the novel by Alice Walker, and based on the musical stage play by Marsha Norma. The executive producers Alice Walker, Rebecca Walker, Kristie Macosko Krieger, Carla Gardini, Mara Jacobs, Adam Fell, Courtenay Valenti, Sheila Walcott and Michael Beugg.

Warner Bros. Pictures will distribute the film worldwide and open in North America on Christmas Day.

Famed Actor Andre Braugher Dead At 61

Several news reports have confirmed that Emmy Award-winning actor Andre Braugher has passed away from an acute illness. Braugher was 61 years old.

The Chicago native gained recognition for his role in the 1989 film Glory starring Denzel Washington and Norgan Freeman, however, he is most widely known for his roles in series such as Homicide: Life on the Street (earning an Emmy in 1998), Men of a Certain Age and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, where he starred alongside Andy Samberg.

Samberg spoke about Braugher’s acting skills in 2014, saying, “Andre has such a fluency in the world of cop drama, and that works to his advantage. Applying the polish and dramatics that you would to something very serious to something very silly is a classic move that I always love.”

Braugher was set to star in the upcoming Netflix series Residence, with filming scheduled to commence early next year, making it one of his last projects before his passing.

Braugher is survived by his wife Ami Brabson and their sons Michael, Isaiah, and John Wesley,

Today, the nominees for the 81st Annual Golden Globe Awards were revealed, building anticipation for the renowned ceremony set to air live on CBS and stream on Paramount+ on January 7, 2024, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

The announcement by Cedric “The Entertainer” and Wilmer Valderrama highlighted nominees across the 27 award categories. The executive-producing showrunners for the event are the multi-Emmy Award-winning duo Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner of White Cherry Entertainment. Tiffany Haddish’s Second DUI Case Under Review by L.A. District Attorney

Last month comedian Tiffany Haddish was arrested for another DUI charge after leaving her show in Hollywood California. The actress/comedian was spotted falling asleep behind the wheel on the street in Beverly Hills. Now the case is under review by the LA. District Attorney’s Office. The D.A.’s office will now decide what charges will stick after the comedian was arrested for her second DUI in less than two years last month.In January 2022, she was taken into custody in Atlanta after allegedly falling asleep behind the wheel after smoking weed.

Radar Online reports:

Tiffany Haddish’s DUI case is now in the hands of the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office, RadarOnline.com can exclusively reveal.

“The case is currently under review,” a spokesperson for the Bureau of Communications told this outlet on Tuesday.

The D.A.’s office will now decide what charges — if any — will stick after the comedian was arrested for her second DUI in less than two years last month.

As this outlet reported, the Girls Trip star was taken into custody by the Beverly Hills Police Department on November 24 when she fell asleep behind the wheel. Luckily, no one was hurt since her Tesla self-parked in the middle of the street.

Haddish was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and was released several hours later. But this isn’t the first time this has happened.

In January 2022, she was taken into custody in Atlanta after allegedly falling asleep behind the wheel after smoking weed. She was released after posting a $1,666 bond. The ordeal wasn’t caught on camera — unlike this time.

Georgia prosecutors are going hard on Haddish after learning of her second arrest. They are demanding the Haunted Mansion actress be restricted from consuming drugs and alcohol.

Legal documents obtained by TMZ last week showed that they want to modify Haddish’s bond conditions from her open DUI case by taking booze and drugs off the table for her. They are also asking for weekly testing.

Nov. 30, 1982, marks the anniversary of the undisputed King of Pop’s monumental album Thriller. So it is no surprise that Thriller 40, a documentary that profiles and illuminates MJ’s artistic accomplishments added to an uptick in his streaming stats. 

Thriller 40, which premiered on Dec. 2nd on Showtime, takes a deep dive into his music and massive influence on the industry at large and not as much into the complications of who Michael Jackson was as a person.

Thriller was easily one of Michael Jackson’s most impactful album projects ever released.

Produced by legendary music producer Quincy Jones, it is considered a culture-shifting body of work, created by Jones and MJ.

Fast forward to now and just last week, three of Jackson’s albums eased into top spots on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart. Keep in mind the coveted chart only allows for 25 slots. As expected with the marketing of the documentary and other publicized fanfare, Thriller took a peaked at No. 6 for the week ending on Dec. 2, according to Luminate. 

It looks like Thriller is still a masterpiece, and now experiencing the story behind the art is renewing all the excitement for one of Michael Jackson’s greatest achievements.

Netflix Trailer for New ‘Griselda’ Series Shows Karol G Starring Opposite Sofia Vergara

Netflix released the first trailer for Griselda, the highly anticipated crime series based on the notorious drug kingpin. Sofía Vergara stars in the lead role as Griselda. Vergara will also serve as series executive producer.

Alongside Vergara, the cast includes Alberto Guerra, Christian Tappan, Martín Rodríguez, Juliana Aidén Martinez, and Vanessa Ferlito. Directing duties for all episodes are being helmed by Andrés Baiz (The Hidden Face). The series was created by Eric Newman, Doug Miro, Ingrid Escajeda, and Carlo Bernard. Escajeda and Miro are the series’ showrunners.

The trailer shows Carolina Giraldo, professionally known as reggaeton star and pop artist Karol G, who hails from Colombia. Karol G will play Carla’s character as this huge role marks her acting debut. Carla, is a close friend and confidant of Griselda, who arrives in Miami from Medellín, Colombia, with other sex workers. She will play a vital role in the Netflix series.

Netflix dropped the official series description: GRISELDA is inspired by the life of the savvy and ambitious Griselda Blanco, who created one of the most profitable cartels in history. In 1970s-80s Miami, Blanco’s lethal blend of unsuspected savagery and charm helped her expertly navigate between business and family, leading her to become widely known as “the Godmother.”

We can expect the series to premiere on Jan. 25, 2024.

The posters give a glimpse of the movie’s stars in addition to Murphy and Ellis Ross, there’s Thaddeus J. Mixson, Genneya Walton and Madison Thomas.

As reported by Blavity, Candy Cane Lane stars Murphy back into his familiar comedy swagger as a happy go lucky dad whose grandest life dream is to make sure his house is the best-decorated home in his community. After his deal with the devil, ironically an elf played by Jillian Bell, places his family and entire neighborhood in a state of chaos.

Eddie Murphy stars in this holiday comedy adventure about a man on a mission to win his neighborhood’s annual Christmas home decoration contest. After Chris (Eddie Murphy) inadvertently makes a deal with a mischievous elf named Pepper (Jillian Bell) to better his chances of winning, she casts a magic spell that brings the 12 Days of Christmas to life, and wreaks havoc on the whole town. At the risk of ruining the holidays for his family, Chris, his wife Carol (Tracee Ellis Ross), and their three children must race against the clock to break Pepper’s spell, battle deviously magical characters, and save Christmas for everyone.

Candy Cane Lane also stars Robin Thede, Chris Redd, Ken Marino, Nick Offerman, Anjelah Johnson-Reyes, Lombardo Boyar, D.C. Young Fly, Danielle Pinnock, Timothy Simons, Riki Lindhome and Stephen Tobolwsky.

The backstory on the development of the film is based on screenwriter Kelly Younger’s life memories of the real Candy Cane Lane in El Segundo, CA a town near LAX in Los Angeles County. Directed by Reginald Hudlin and produced by Brian Grazer, the film reunites the filmmaker team behind Boomerang, Murphy’s hit ’90s comedy. Murphy, Karen Lunder and Charisse Hewitt-Webster, also serve as producers while Doug Merrifield will executive produce.

Candy Cane Lane premieres on Dec 1, exclusively on Prime Video.
