Here’s Why Doja Cat Changed Her Album Title From ‘Hellmouth’ To ‘Scarlet’

Over the past few months, there are many things “Paint The Town Red” rapper Doja Cat has altered. From her now signature haircut to her countless tattoos (that have sent users online into a frenzy), the Grammy Award winner isn’t afraid to make changes spontaneous changes. However, fans were vocal about their annoyance with Doja’s indecisiveness behind her latest album’s title.

Yesterday (October 12), during her appearance on Hot Ones, she addressed the thought process behind the creative call. So, here’s why Doja Cat changed her album title from Hellmouth to Scarlet.

When asked by host Sean Evans to elaborate on what goes into selecting an album title, Doja replied, “I don’t care about the meaning being so deep, as much as the word being a cool word. I just like good words. I thought Hellmouth was cool… it’s like the gates of hell. But that felt so aggressive to me after a while, and I don’t know if I even like it anymore. I change my mind constantly. And Scarlet felt like the right thing to do.”

She continued, “It’s kind of an ode to Hot Pink. I did the name of a color, but it’s not really; you think of Scarlet as someone’s first name and not as a color. That was kind of the twist to it. And also red is just a passionate shade.”

Doja Cat Explains Changing Album Name From “Hellmouth” To “Scarlet”

Doja Cat says that the name Hellmouth felt too aggressive for her new album, hence the change to Scarlet. She discussed the name of the project during an interview with Sean Evans on Hot Ones, for an episode that premiered Thursday.

When Evans asked about the changing of the name, Doja explained: “I don’t care about the meaning being so deep, as much as the word being a cool word. I just like good words. I thought Hellmouth was cool … it’s like the gates of hell. But that felt so aggressive to me after a while, and I don’t know if I even like it anymore.”

From there, she explained that Scarlet made more sense. “I change my mind constantly,” Doja admitted. “And Scarlet felt like the right thing to do, ’cause it’s kind of an ode to Hot Pink. I did the name of a color, but it’s not really; you think of [Scarlett] as someone’s first name, and not as a color. That was kind of the twist to it. And also red is just a passionate shade.” Check out her appearance on Hot Ones below.

Doja Cat Takes On “Hot Ones”

Elsewhere in the interview, Doja spoke about how deep into internet culture she is, revealing that she’s currently obsessed with “YouTube poop,” which Evans described as a “sub genre of YouTube comedy.” Doja explained: “I like it most when it’s a talk show, and you go in and edit it to make it sound like someone’s saying something that’s super crass and cr*zy,. Like, there’s some Dr. Phil YouTube poops that are some of the best ones. I keep going back to them, but it’s a very deep rabbit hole.” The interview comes after Doja recently faced backlash online for wearing a t-shirt featuring the face of alleged neo-Nazi Sam Hyde.

Doja Cat Blames Her ADHD For Constantly Changing Her Album Title: ‘I’m Good At Doing Things Last Minute’

Doja Cat has said her new record will be influenced by rave music, then that it’d be R&B, then predominantly rap. Similarly, she’s continued to backpedal on album titles. It started with Hellmouth, then became Moist Holes, and then First Of All.

At the Patrón El Cielo launch party in New York City, the “Woman” singer discussed her new album more. Insider asked her how she picks an album title, and she predictably answered, “Good God. I don’t know.”

She elaborated, “I put my ADHD kind of on display — by accident, I guess,” she said. “I thought that Hellmouth was the name of the album, but then it wasn’t. But I’m good at doing things last minute. So I’ve been firing off random stuff and reading comments and seeing how people receive it and then, you know, saying ‘no’ a lot. ‘Just kidding.’”

“I do think that I finally have a title,” she said, “It’s not First Of All.”

Later in the interview she explained her aesthetic. “It fluctuates. I can’t really define what it is,” she said. “But musically, I’ve been trying to go back and sort of pull from things that were huge influences to me as a kid. You know, like jazz influences and stuff like that. So that’s been a big inspiration for me lately and sort of a defining characteristic of my music.”

Doja Cat Leaked A Snippet Of Her New Album On Instagram And Backpedaled On The Title Again

Being a Doja Cat fan is not easy. In March, speculation emerged about the title of the musician’s highly anticipated new album after she tweeted “#hellmouth.” It seemed like a simple announcement, especially after she kept confusing people about what the genre would be, saying it would be rave-influenced, rap, R&B, punk, and not pop.

However, as Doja backpedals on what genre it is, she’s also backpedaling on what the title is. “The whole album is no longer rap yall its rock/spoken word and the album title is not Hellmouth anymore,” she tweeted last month. A minute later, she added, “Album is called Moist Holes.”

The shenanigans continued Tuesday, May 9, when Doja took to Twitter to stir the pot further: “its not called hEllMoUth either its called ‘First of All’ and yes I’m announcing the album title right now.” This followed her Instagram Live in which she shared a snippet of a new song.

Moist Holes was hard to believe. First of All is now suspiciously normal. Fans are tired of hearing about it, though. In the replies, some are demanding she drop the record already. She leaked a possible tracklist on her Instagram Story last month as well. Still, no release date has been teased.

Doja Cat Was Spotted Filming A Music Video In LA, Now Fans Believe That Her ‘Hellmouth’ Album Is Moving Along Quickly

Doja Cat often speaks about her desire to quit music. Whether the “Women” rapper is joking or not is unknown. However, over the past few weeks, Doja Cat has taken to Twitter to share updates on the new music she’s working on. In March, the musician revealed the working title for her forthcoming album, Hellmouth. Shortly after, she shared the project’s direction, proclaiming, “No more pop,” letting fans know it is solely a rap project.

Now, fans believe that her Hellmouth is moving along quickly after Doja Cat was spotted filming a music video in downtown Los Angeles. In the clip, Doja Cat is recorded fiercely walking down South Broadway as a team of videographers films her.

Although fan pages have claimed the footage is from late April, no further information is known about the filming. As for Doja Cat’s forthcoming album, the entertainer has shared snippets of tracks set to make the final project. The Grammy Award-winner even shared the album’s tracklist.

“I also agree with everyone who said the majority of my rap verses are mid and corny. I know they are. I wasn’t trying to prove anything. I just enjoy making music, but I’m getting tired of hearing yall say that I can’t, so I will,” said Doja on social media, referring to the pending project.

Doja Cat Teases Snippets Of Her New Album And Shares The Possible Tracklist

Doja Cat is having fun messing around with her fans about her new album. The follow-up to 2021’s singular Planet Her is highly anticipated and rumors abound, mostly started by the singer herself. For instance, she has continuously backtracked on what genre it will be: rave-influenced, rap, R&B, punk, not pop.

As if that’s not enough, Doja has fans confused about what it will be called. She’s teased the title Hellmouth and then claimed it was “not Hellmouth anymore,” and instead Moist Holes. Of course, fans did not take that at face value.

Yesterday (April 17), the “Woman” performer shared an Instagram Story that seemed to unveil the LP tracklist, which included 19 songs. It displays questionable titles such as “Wet Vagina,” “Gun,” and “Ouchies.”

Afterward, she went on Instagram Live and played snippets of songs to build up the hype even further. Luckily, the stream has since been shared to YouTube and can be viewed. During it, she says, “You’re probably wondering how I’m hearing this for the first time when it’s my song, but whenever I make a song or an album, I’m so high that I forget what it sounds like until I come back to it.”

Is Doja Cat’s Next Album Called ‘Hellmouth?’

Doja Cat is having a hard time keeping quiet about her new album. She’s also having a hard time telling the truth about it. First, she claimed it had rave influence, and then she said it was a lie and that it was actually R&B-leaning. Finally, she said it would be “predominantly rap,” and began teasing a title.

“DC4 has a title now,” the “Woman” singer tweeted on March 22. She then followed that up with another tweet: “#hellmouth.” Of course, fans proceeded to freak out and conclude that she was officially announced that as the album title, but it’s safe to say that you can never know with Doja.

Yesterday, April 9, she demonstrated her capriciousness once more with another frustrating tweet: “The whole album is no longer rap yall its rock/spoken word and the album title is not Hellmouth anymore.” A minute later, she tweeted, “Album is called Moist Holes.”

On April 8, she also took to Twitter to share a screenshot of audio files, apparently leaking upcoming song titles such as “Wet Vagina,” “Balut,” and “Agora Hills.” She continued to confuse fans about what genre she’ll be tackling with the next LP by writing in a tweet, “No more pop.”
