Gerwig’s filmography is a diverse canvas showcasing her growth from an actor in the mumblecore movement to a writer-director of acclaim. Her directorial debut, Lady Bird, catapulted her to the forefront of cinema, followed by her astute adaptation of Little Women. However, her 2023 film Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, marked a new pinnacle in her career. The film, a critical and commercial juggernaut, was a satirical take on misogyny and societal norms. It earned plaudits for its innovative storytelling and direction.

Despite the overwhelming success of Barbie, both Gerwig and lead actress Margot Robbie faced a surprising snub at the Oscars. It was an event that caused a stir in the industry. Gerwig did snag a nomination for Best Screenplay, but she was absent from the Best Director category. The film’s powerful narrative on gender stereotypes and its commercial success made the snub more ironic, especially given Ryan Gosling’s nomination for the same film. This incident highlighted ongoing conversations about recognition and representation in Hollywood. Gerwig’s and Robbie’s omission from the nominations is seen as a significant oversight.

Known for her advocacy for gender equality in Hollywood, she continues to use her voice to champion more inclusive narratives in cinema. Her personal life, though she keeps it private, is an integral part of her creative process, often reflected in the authenticity and depth of her films. Her commitment to philanthropy, particularly in arts education, underscores her dedication to fostering new talent and perspectives in the industry.

Greta Gerwig’s ascent to a net worth of $12 million is interwoven with her contributions to cinema as a visionary director and storyteller. Her career, highlighted by films like “Barbie,” demonstrates her ability to challenge norms and captivate audiences, making her one of the most influential figures in contemporary filmmaking.

Ryan Gosling Is Now A Grammy Nominee Thanks To His Smash ‘Barbie’ Hit

warner bros.

It should not be a shock to you that Ryan Gosling is a talented musician, or that the man has a Halloween-themed band called Dead Mans Bones where he sings about death alongside a choir of schoolchildren. The fact that that wasn’t nominated for a Grammy is shocking, but they seem to be making up for it this year by finally recognizing Gosling’s contribution to the music industry and giving him a Grammy nom. He’s come so far.

I’m Just Ken” from Warner Bros smash hit Barbie received a nomination for Best Song Written For Visual Media, along with fellow Barbie nominee Billie Eilish, who also received a nom for “What Was I Made For,” a song that will make you cry no matter where you are or what you are doing. Also nominated are Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice, and Aqua for “Barbie World” and Dua Lipa for “Dance The Night” so Barbie has some stiff competition with herself.

Unfortunately, Gosling did not receive recognition for his cover of “Push” by Matchbox Twenty but there’s always the Kid’s Choice Awards for that one.

Barbie’s director Greta Gerwig told Rolling Stone earlier this year that the track came together organically. “He has a beautiful voice, and he’s a beautiful dancer. We kind of got there organically. I think if I had said, ‘I want you to sing and dance in this movie,’ he would not have necessarily done that for me. But it was kind of that thing of boiling a lobster. I think by the time he was singing and dancing, he didn’t even totally know how we had gotten there. [Laughs] But he’s so fabulous at it.” Pete Davidson was also fabulous at it.

Until the Grammys hold the ceremony where the winners are announced, feel free to watch this video every day.

Nicki Minaj Received A Letter From Greta Gerwig To Be On “Barbie” Soundtrack

Earlier this year, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie became the definitive pop culture event of the summer. The film had an absolutely stacked cast and built up massive hype through its various trailers and promotions. That clearly paid off because the film broke all kinds of box office records. Part of that hype was no doubt the soundtrack for the film. Some of the biggest artists in the world like Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish, Lizzo, Khalid, and many more appeared in the tracklist of the film’s soundtrack.

One of the standout songs from the film and one of the biggest hits it produced is “Barbie World” from Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice. It was the pair’s second collaboration following Nicki hopping on a remix of Spice’s song “Princess Diana.” “Barbie World” has been on the Hot 100 for over 3 months now peaking at number 7. It’s still inside the top 15 as well, sitting at the 12th spot on the chart this week. Now in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, one of the film’s producers went into detail on how Nicki’s involvement was procured.

Greta Gerwig’s Letter To Nicki Minaj

“From the very beginning, we had felt like having Nicki, who is Barbie essentially, be a part of this thing,” Barbie producer Kevin Weaver said. “We went to Greta and asked Greta if she would write a letter to Nicki and Greta wrote this beautiful note to Nicki and basically said like, ‘You are Queen Barb and when I set out to make this film, as I was thinking of artists, you were the first artist that really came to me as somebody that I felt was going to be an important collaborator and contributor to this.’

Clearly the letter worked not only to get Nicki Minaj on board, but Ice Spice as well. “Nicki hit us back and said that she was 100 percent in.” What do you think of Greta Gerwig’s letter to Nicki Minaj? Let us know in the comment section below.

Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” Makes Billion-Dollar Herstory

Since the live-action Barbie movie was first announced, the inner child of adults all across the globe has been buzzing with excitement. Amy Schumer was first cast in the prestigious role. After she stepped down, it went to Australian starlet Margot Robbie, who was undoubtedly the perfect choice for the part. Of course, many other women also play the part of Barbie, including Issa Rae and Dua Lipa. As for the male lead, Canadian actor Ryan Gosling covered that flawlessly, even with the internet expressing concern that he was too old.

Greta Gerwig was the mastermind in Barbie‘s director chair, following her work on projects like Little Women and Lady Bird. It was an ambitious project, but thanks to her efforts, the 40-year-old is now the first female filmmaker to join the billion-dollar box office club with their solo work. As TMZ notes, Jennifer Lee and Anna Boden are both already in the category (for Frozen and Captain Marvel respectively), but their co-director status makes Gerwig’s standalone effort marks a noteworthy accolade for her resume.

Barbie is One of a Kind

As for solo female directors who come behind Greta in line, Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman brought in a considerably lower $412M during its time in theatres. Following that is Betty Thomas’ Alvin and the Chipmunks ($219M), Catherine Hardwicke’s Twilight ($192M), and Elizabeth Banks’ Pitch Perfect 2 ($184M). There are no clear plans for a Barbie sequel at this time, though Mattel has expressed interest in creating a full cinematic universe with other toys, including Barney, Polly Pocket, and Magic 8 Ball.

Seeing as Barbie brought in over $155M in its opening weekend alone, we’re not surprised to see the pink-filled film continuing to do numbers. What did catch viewers off guard, however, was the lack of physical intimacy between Barbie and Ken on-screen. Read what Margot Robbie had to say about that at the link below, and check back later for more music/pop culture news updates.

What Song Does Ken Sing To Barbie In ‘Barbie’?

[Warning: this post contains spoilers for Barbie]

Lady Bird was a younger generation’s introduction to Dave Matthews Band. Will Greta Gerwig’s new film, Barbie, do the same thing for Matchbox Twenty?

Late in the movie, after Ken (played by Ryan Gosling) takes over Barbie Land and turns Barbie’s Dreamhouse into Ken’s Mojo Dojo Casa House, Barbie (Margot Robbie) hatches a plan with her fellow Barbies to return things to the way they were. (It’s impossible to discuss this movie and not say the word “Barbie” 7,000 times.) The scheme involves having all the Kens serenade their Barbies with an acoustic version of “Push” by Matchbox Twenty.

It may have seemed that Gerwig and co-writer Noah Baumbach were making fun of Rob Thomas & Co. for their post-grunge angsty anthem, which was released when they were still “Matchbox 20” (this is important to me, a guy whose first email address referenced “Back 2 Good”). But that’s not the case.

“I will say there were many notes, many notes sessions on all fronts, but the thing is that anything that have in a movie, any reference — and we reference The Godfather, Matchbox Twenty, Dave Matthews Band — I love all of it,” Gerwig told IndieWire. “I never put anything in a movie I don’t love, and that’s true. I don’t really have use for things that I don’t have affection for, within a movie. That was the core of it.”

What ’90s song will Gerwig deconstruct next? My money’s on Everclear’s “Santa Monica.”

Margot Robbie’s Begging Helped Bring Nicki Minaj And Ice Spice’s ‘Barbie’ Movie Song To Life

Last week saw the release of Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice’sBarbie World,” a new take on Aqua’s classic “Barbie Girl” recorded for the Barbie movie. It turns out that fans have star Margot Robbie to thank in part for the song’s existence.

In a new feature about the music of the Barbie movie, Rolling Stone notes how outraged fans were when Aqua said last year that their song wouldn’t be in the movie. The publication continued, “Even though it wasn’t in the script, Gerwig’s plan all along was to find a place for it, especially since Robbie and others were begging for it.”

Margot Robbie said, “I was like, ‘Greta, how are we going to incorporate this song? We can’t do a Barbie movie and not have a nod to Aqua’s ‘Barbie Girl.’ It has to be in there.’ And [Greta] was like, ‘Don’t worry, we’re going to find a cool way to incorporate it.’ And then, when she was like, ‘Guess who’s going to do the remix of Aqua’s “Barbie Girl”? Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice.’ I was like, ‘Together? Are you joking?!’ I just knew immediately that all my girlfriends were going to lose their minds.”

Mark Ronson also made note how how natural a fit Minaj was for the song, saying, “I feel like people have been asking Nicki to rhyme over some version of ‘Barbie Girl’ for 15 years now.”
