Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, LL Cool J & More Close 2023 VMAs With Hip-Hop 50 Tribute: Watch

Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj held it down at the VMAs on Tuesday night at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. There’s no doubt the two became fixtures at the annual award show throughout its history, delivering memorable moments and sound bites that have lived on in the years that followed. However, on Tuesday night, their presence was surely felt from the moment the show began. Lil Wayne entered the stage to perform a medley of songs including “Uproar” and his latest single, “Kat Food.

As for Nicki Minaj, she served as the host for the evening. However, her appearance certainly wasn’t limited to that. While she did get to guide fans through the evening, she eventually hit the stage where she performed her new single, “Last Time I Saw You,” and debuted an unreleased song from the upcoming Pink Friday 2 titled, “Big Difference.” Still, she hit the stage later on to pay homage to hip-hop’s major milestone.

VMAs Celebrate Hip-Hop’s 50th Anniversary

With Hip Hop 50 celebrations still underway, the VMAs came through with an impeccable way to honor the music that’s shaped its history with appearances from Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj. The tribute closed out Tuesday night’s festivities, dedicating the final moments of the VMAs to the evolution of the culture. Along with Wayne and Nicki, LL Cool J also headlined the performance while DMC, Doug E. Fresh, Slick Rick, and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five accompanied them on stage.

The performance kicked off with Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five delivering a stellar performance of “The Message.” Then, Doug E. Fresh, who hit the original Dougie, and Slick Rick came out to the stage. Nicki Minaj came out to perform “Itty Bitty Piggy” — clearly a fan favorite by the way the crowd finished each bar. Nicki then dove into “Red Ruby Da Sleeze” afterward before the VMAs transitioned to Lil Wayne who performed “A Milli.” LL Cool J leaped into “I’m Bad” and “Mama Said Knock You Out” before sticking around for DMC’s performance.

Scorpio Hypes Up Ice Spice And Scar Lip

Eddie Morris, aka Scorpio, is a music legend. Also known as Mr. Ness, he was an original member of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, one of the most influential groups in music history. Scorpio was recruited to the group by Flash himself. However, Scorpio would leave with Melle Mel after Flash sued their record company for unpaid royalties from “White Lines (Don’t Don’t Do It)”. Scorpio would work closely with Grandmaster Melle Mel, including the release of 1997’s Right Now.

In 2022, Scorpio reflected on “The Message”, arguably the biggest hit of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. “I think one of the important things about that song is it just have us trusting in things that we didn’t trust in sometimes. Like with music, you gotta get out of your own ego. Because realistically, we hated that song. We couldn’t stand that song. We didn’t think that it had no reality to us, but thank God Ms. Robinson had the better vision. Thinking, because we was coming from the Bronx, that it’ll match better versus putting it with somebody else, or whatever the case may be. So just trusting in other people was the biggest lesson. We don’t have all of the answers. No artists have all of the answers.” Now he’s giving his flowers to the next generation of hp-hop.

Scorpio Shouts Out Ice Spice And Scar Lip

“Everybody is doing their thing, females taking over,” Scorpio said in a 4th of July video. “Big up to all the sisters out there in the Bronx—Ice Spice, Scar Lip, all of them—even if it’s not your style of music, they gettin’ up out the mud, so we gotta salute.” Obviously, Spice and Scar are two of the biggest names in the game right now. Spice broke out with “Munch (Feelin’ U)” and “Bikini Bottom” in 2022. She’s followed that up with three top-10 singles this year – “Boy’s A Liar Pt. 2” [#3), “Princess Diana” [#4), and “Barbie World” (#7). Furthermore, she is a must-have on any festival setlist and is most recently coming off a performance at Wireless in London.

Meanwhile, Scar Lip isn’t quite at the same level of hype as Ice Spice but is gaining that popularity fast. Like Spice and “Munch”, Scar saw her song “Glizzy Gobbler” go viral on TikTok. That led to a record deal with Epic Records. She then kicked off 2023 with another breakout single, “This Is New York”. The most recent news out of her camp is that she might have a collab with Cardi B in the works. 2023 has been a huge year for women in rap, but there is still a lot of fierce backlash towards their inclusion. However, messages of support from the likes of legends like Scorpio go a long way to helping rectify that.

Coi Leray & David Guetta Collide On “Players (Remix)”

Coi Leray isn’t letting her foot off the gas when it comes to her hit record, “Players” and this week, she unloaded the remix with David Guetta. As the song continues to bubble on TikTok and the radio, Coi’s continued to deliver a slew of remixes to keep the record’s momentum high. She tapped into the buzzing Jersey Club sound when she linked up with DJ Smallz 732, who breathed new life into the song. Then, she linked up with DJ Saige for another remix of the record.

Over the weekend, Coi Leray joined the roster of artists who’ve had the opportunity to have David Guetta remix the song. Guetta’s remix of the record falls in line with his signature strain of club EDM by flipping the sample of “The Message” by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. While Coi doesn’t necessarily add any new vocals, the remix could very well be the anecdote to propel the single to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Either way, Coi continues to make a strong case for her staying power.

David Guetta Electrifies Coi Leray’s “Players” On The Official Remix

The success of “Players” certainly caught many people off-guard. In the past year, the New Jersey-based rapper made a 180 in her career following the release of her debut album, Trendsetter. Despite the number of high-profile features, the album was considered a flop commercially and critically, though she evidently didn’t prevent her from returning with new heat.

“I’m 25, and sometimes you don’t know everything,” Leray told Billboard of the song’s success. “I look at constructive criticism, even in a negative way. I try to figure out how to learn from it — just taking it and bringing it back even better. You don’t know everything. I learned the power of listening is key.” Evidently, Coi Leray is evolving and taking cues from the criticism she’s faced since she came out. Check out the David Guetta remix above and sound off with your thoughts in the comments.

Lil’ titties showin’ through the white tee
You can see the thong bussin’ out my tight jeans
Rocks on my fingers like a n***a wifed me
Got another shorty? She ain’t nothin’ like me

Melle Mel Praises Pusha T’s “White Lines” Remix

Melle Mel’s had a whole lot to say about some of hip-hop’s most cherished MCs in recent times. The Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five member’s interview with the Art Of Dialogue led to hot takes. Artists like Eminem and Kendrick Lamar felt the wrath of his criticism the most. Despite Em’s high ranking in Billboard and Vibe’s top 50 greatest rappers list, Mel said the Detroit rapper wouldn’t have been as big if he wasn’t white – a comment that earned a response from 50 Cent.

Shortly after, he said that Kendrick Lamar wasn’t an influential rapper – another take that many disagreed with. Chuck D later came to his defense. He explained Mel’s been critical of the rappers that came after him, it seems as though the rap pioneer has a few artists he appreciates in modern rap. Pusha T, who recently remixed Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five’s “The Message,” is apparently one of the few rappers in the game who’ve earned Mel’s respect.

Melle Mel & Scorpio Applaud Pusha T

Pusha T debuted his remix of “The Message,” titled “White Lines,” for the Cocaine Bear soundtrack. Though Push is an embodiment of the antithesis to the iconic 1982 anthem, Melle Mel praised the Clipse member for flipping the song. “I think it’s just a great testament to the legacy of the group and myself to make a record that’s 40 years old that can still be relevant,” he told All Hip Hop. “Mobb Deep used it, too. Even up to right now with it being in Cocaine Bear and Pusha T doing the remake, it’s a testament to how powerful our music was and the imprint that it left and is still leaving within the music business.”

Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five member Scorpio echoed a similar sentiment. He explained that it’s “an honor” to see so many artists take influence from them forty years later. “To see this after all of the years is just incredible,” Scorpio added. “We’re talking 40 years. For it to stand the test of time and to see all the artists like Duran Duran, Mobb Deep, and Pusha T who keep recycling it is just an honor.” What are your thoughts on Pusha T’s record?
