spacerace

The trailer just premiered for The Space Race, a new documentary based on the history of Black astronauts. From director Diego Hurtado de Mendoza and Lisa Cortés with writing from Mark Monroe, the documentary includes notable trailblazers such as Guion Bluford, Charles Bolden, Ed Dwight, Victor Glover, Frederick Gregory, Bernard Harris, Leland Melvin, Arnaldo Tamayo Méndez and Jessica Watkins. The Space Race will released on National Geographic on Feb. 12 and then can be streamed on both Disney+ and Hulu on Feb. 13.

The documentary’s slew of producers includes Alexandra Bowen, Aly Parker, Mark Monroe, Keero Birla, Lisa Cortés, and Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, includes executive producers Frank Marshall, Tony Rosenthal, Carolyn Bernstein, and Leland Melvin.

The official synopsis reads:

The Space Race weaves together the stories of Black astronauts seeking to break the bonds of social injustice to reach for the stars, including Guion Bluford, Ed Dwight and Charles Bolden among many others. In THE SPACE RACE, directors Lisa Cortés and Diego Hurtado de Mendoza profile the pioneering Black pilots, scientists, and engineers who joined NASA to serve their country in space, even as their country failed to achieve equality for them back on Earth. From 1963, when the assassination of JFK thwarted Captain Ed Dwight’s quest to reach the moon, to 2020, when the echoes of the civil unrest sparked by the killing of George Floyd reached the International Space Station, the story of African Americans at NASA is a tale of world events colliding with the aspirations of uncommon men. The bright dreams of Afrofuturism become reality in The Space Race, turning science fiction into science fact, and forever redefining what “the right stuff” looks like, giving us new heroes to celebrate, and a fresh history to explore.

Renowned Civil Rights Attorney Ben Crump Produces Documentary ‘How to Sue the Klan’

Ben Crump to Announce Lawsuit Against FL Gov. Ron DeSantis Over AP African American Studies Course

Highly acclaimed civil rights attorney Ben Crump takes on a new role as a producer for the impactful documentary How to Sue the Klan. Set to be screened during Black History Month, the film highlights the courageous endeavors of five Black women who confronted the Ku Klux Klan in a groundbreaking 1982 civil trial, ultimately emerging victorious.

Following a racially motivated mass shooting in Chattanooga, the women utilized the little-known Civil War-era Ku Klux Klan Act, securing a triumph that remains a model in the battle against racial violence today. How to Sue the Klan explores the use of legal strategies to combat such violence, focusing on a landmark trial that set a precedent, hitting the Klan where it hurt the most: in their bank accounts.

“‘How to Sue the Klan tells the grueling story of the brave women of the Chattanooga Five in their fight against injustice,” said Crump. “The film’s plot mirrors our modern times, as we still battle the ugly face of racism in our country with civil action. I am honored to be part of the outstanding team that made this film come to life and look forward to sharing it with the world.”

The documentary delves into the aftermath of the trial, the enduring legacy of the women who fought for justice, and the ongoing relevance of the Ku Klux Klan Act in today’s fight against organized hate. Crump’s involvement adds significance to the project, following his impactful work in the Netflix documentary “Civil,” where he fought for justice for the families of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Black farmers. How to Sue the Klan serves as a powerful call to action for attorneys and advocates to utilize civil rights tools, emphasizing the continued importance of the Ku Klux Klan Act in pursuing justice. The film is directed by Emmy®-nominated filmmaker John Beder, who is also a resident of Chattanooga.

Marvel’s ‘Thunderbolts’ Film Loses Ayo Edebiri’s Due To Scheduling

Marvel’s ‘Thunderbolts’ Film Loses Ayo Edebiri’s Due To Scheduling

Marvel’s upcoming film, Thunderbolts, just lost a star, Ayo Edebiri, who is leaving the project due to scheduling conflicts.

As reported by Deadline, Geraldine Viswanathan (Miracle Workers, Blockers) is sliding into the role for Edebiri. The production was delayed due to the writer’s and actor’s strikes last year, like many projects in the Hollywood production pipeline.

Gotta applaud Marvel for sticking with the diversity packaging for Thunderbolts by bringing in Viswanathan to replace Edebiri. Still, the latter actress is the second time an actor who is a POC has left the project. Walking Dead actor Steven Yeun, who recently won a primetime Emmy for Beef, was cast in Thunderbolts but exited production weeks ago. Lewis Pullman replaced him.

Adding Pullman is a bit of a diversity takeaway as he joins Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Wyatt Russell, and Olga Kurylenko. Hannah John-Kamen is the only POC alongside Viswanathan. That aside, hopefully, it’s just a good film.

From Director Jake Schreier, Thunderbolts is a fresh addition to the Marvel world, bringing “various villains/antiheroes together to become a shadow organization created by the government to complete missions around the world.”

Thunderbolts hit theaters in the Summer of 2025.

New Lego Movie Based on Pharrell Williams’s Life From Focus Features Set To Hit Theaters

New Lego Movie Based on Pharrell Williams's Life From Focus Features Set To Hit Theaters

The next LEGO movie is thinking outside the box. Piece By Piece is coming to theaters and will be inspired by Pharrell Williams’s life. Sounds interesting …

The film is a Focus Features piece, no pun intended, and will be helmed by Director Morgan Neville, an Academy Award winner. Neville and Caitrin Rogers produce the new animated LEGO installment via Tremolo Productions. Williams, Mimi Valdés, and Shani Saxon are producing under Williams’ i am OTHER banner alongside LEGO Group’s Jill Wilfert and Keith Malone, executive producing Piece By Piece. Expect the film to feel like a biopic, albeit through the LEGO art form.

Focus Features say the film is described as “Pharrell set out to tell his story in a way that would set audience’s imaginations free. Developed from his singular vision, PIECE BY PIECE defies genres and expectations to transport audiences into a LEGO world where anything is possible.”

This is a long time coming as Neville said Williams pitched his story as a LEGO film five years ago. “It was one of those rare moments where I knew in a second that this was a journey I wanted to go on,” he said. “I’m so grateful to our partners at Focus Features and at the LEGO Group for their belief in our crazy mission. We assembled an incredible team of creative collaborators to help make a new type of film. I can’t wait for people to see it.”

Williams said, “When I had this crazy vision to tell this story through LEGO bricks, I couldn’t have imagined a better partner than Morgan. He is a legend. Grateful that Focus wanted to collaborate with us and I’m honored to share this with the world and bring people into my universe. Building with LEGO bricks encourages us to follow our imagination…who would’ve thought that playing with these toys as a kid would evolve into a movie about my life. It’s proof that anyone else can do it too.”

Piece By Piece is expected to hit theaters on Oct 11.
