Gunna Delivers A Stripped-Down Live Performance In His Moody ‘Life Of Sin’ Video

Gunna’s wave continues to crest. The Atlanta rapper’s latest album DS4EVER edged out The Weeknd’s Dawn FM to become the No.1-selling album this week after dropping the singles “Too Easy,” “Livin Wild,” and “Pushin P.” Today, he keeps the rollout rolling out with the video for “Life Of Sin,” which is presented as a moody, stripped-down live performance in a similar style to his COLORS performance of “Top Off.”

Posted up in a white-walled performance space, Gunna foregoes any fancy adornments and he stands and delivers the motivational lyrics from “Life Of Sin” wearing a vest and a beret. A chilly autumn scene is projected on the walls and ceiling behind him, and a sprinkling of fallen leaves provides a lonely pop of color in the black-and-white photography, supporting the contemplative mood of the song itself.

Part of Gunna’s strategy to get DS4EVER to the top of the albums chart was to release a reshuffled deluxe edition mid-week, adding four new songs amid the original 19. It clearly paid off, buoying him to his second no. 1 with just 2,300 sales difference between Gunna and second-place, The Weeknd.

Gunna’s ‘DS4EVER’ Edges Out The Weeknd For The Top Spot On The ‘Billboard’ 200

Gunna has already been atop the Billboard 200 once before in his career with 2020’s Wunna. But now he’s officially a two-time chart-topper as DS4EVER is the new No. 1 album in on the Billboard 200 chart. The album — which features appearances from Young Thug, 21 Savage, Kodak Black, Drake, Future, Roddy Rich, and more — clocked 150,300 units sold in its first week to top the chart dated January 22, while de-throning the soundtrack to Disney’s Encanto.

It was a close race to the top this week, as The Weeknd’s Dawn FM came in at No. 2 with 148,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending January 13. Dawn FM, with features from Tyler The Creator, Lil Wayne, Quincy Jones, and Jim Carey, might have seemed the clubhouse favorite to most, with its elaborate rollout and The Weeknd’s high-profile appearances, but the runner-up spot will have to suffice for now. The aforementioned Encanto soundtrack dropped down to No. 3, despite boasting its highest weekly tally of units sold with 95,700. Adele’s 30 and Morgan Wallen’s Dangerous: The Double Album round out the rest of the top five.

But for Gunna, this marks a steady history of success on the Billboard 200. Beyond the No. 1 status of DS4EVER and Wunna, in 2018, the Atlanta rapper’s Drip Season 3 mixtape peaked at No. 55, and his collaboration with Lil Baby, Drip Harder, reached No. 4. His 2019 debut studio album, Drip Or Drown 2 topped out at No. 3.

Gunna Says Freddie Gibbs Reached Out For A Collab After Freddie Called Him A Snitch

Of the many noteworthy, viral moments on Gunna‘s new album DS4EVER, one that amused fans was Gunna’s Freddie Gibbs diss, which didn’t quite live up to expectations after he hyped it up the week of the album’s release. Earlier that week, Gunna tweeted, “When my album drop Freddie Gibbs will have the biggest moment of his career.” However, upon hearing “Poochie Gown,” the song containing the diss, fans (and Freddie) were underwhelmed to hear the line in question. “I can’t f*ck with Freddie Gibbs / N****s tellin’ fibs.” Oooh. Burn.

Today, Gunna stopped by The Breakfast Club, where he was grilled about the origins of the line and revealed just how deep his resentment of the Gary, Indiana rapper runs. While fans speculated — and Gunna confirmed — that the line was a response to Gibbs’ 2020 comments suggesting Gunna was a “snitch” after footage of his appearance on a local news clip was mistaken for a scene from Crime Stoppers online, Gibbs revealed that Freddie had reached out to collaborate, even after the misunderstanding.

“Some people just speak on it, like, ‘OH he was on Crime Stoppers’” Gunna complained. “When? I don’t know, I ain’t never sent nobody to jail. I ain’t never talk to a cop on-camera… He tried to do a song with me, through my manager… He thought I forgot.” Unfortunately, his lyrical reply turned out to be a dud, only giving Gibbs new, more legitimate reasons to ridicule him. While that collaboration idea does sound intriguing, it looks like the two rappers now have more in conflict than in common (they’re both technically Warner artists), so don’t hold your breath.

Gunna And Drake’s Long-Awaited ‘P Power’ Collaboration Adds A New Highlight To ‘DS4EVER’

Gunna released his third album DS4EVER this past Friday and fans quickly noticed that a notable collaboration was missing from it. Gunna’s “P Power” track with Drake — which was previously titled “P*ssy Power” — was absent from the project when it was made available on streaming platforms last weekend. A reason for it was not given by Gunna, Drake, or their respective teams, but at long last, the song is finally here.

The track is carried by a sample of Donna Summer’s “Could It Be Magic” thanks to excellent production from Metro Boomin. “P*ssy Power” as a whole is an erotic record dedicated to women and their sexual prowess. Both rappers detail drug-driven moments with the women in their lives and how they cater to them thanks to their lavish and wealthy lifestyles.

With the release of “P Power,” Drake joins a healthy cast of guest acts on DS4EVER which includes Future, Lil Baby, Young Thug, Kodak Black, 21 Savage, Roddy Ricch, Chloe Bailey, G Herbo, Yung Bleu, and more. The release of “P*ssy Power” also comes after Gunna shared a video for “Pushin P” with Future and Young Thug. Gunna also shared a deluxe version of DS4EVER with four additional songs, but it was quickly removed from streaming platforms.

You can listen to “P Power” in the video above.

Gunna And Future Really Sell Their New Slang In The NSFW-Ish ‘Pushin P’ Video With Young Thug

Gunna is really trying to make “fetch” happen with his new single “Pushin P” featuring Future and Young Thug. The three Atlanta rappers sell their newfangled slang term as hard as they can in the NSFW-ish video, even inserting little interludes of them using it in everyday life while they party at a strip club. Whether or not it’ll catch on remains to be seen, but the song itself has proven to be one of the fans’ favorites from Gunna’s new album DS4EVER, which just dropped last Friday and is on track for a No. 2 debut on the Billboard 200 next week.

In addition to “Pushin P,” Gunna’s campaign for the album has included the singles “Too Easy” and “Livin Wild,” as well as a video for the remix of “Too Easy” featuring frequent collaborator Roddy Ricch. Gunna also released a deluxe edition of the new album just days after the original, sprinkling four new songs in amidst a tracklist that featured 21 Savage, G Herbo, Kodak Black, Lil Baby, Nechie, Yung Bleu, and Gunna’s possible girlfriend Chloe Bailey on the Jon B-sampling “You & Me.” And for fans who just can’t get enough of Gunna this week, he’s also listed as a feature on Cordae’s upcoming album, From A Bird’s Eye View.

Gunna Shines When He Branches Out On The Slickly-Executed ‘DS4EVER’

The RX is Uproxx Music’s stamp of approval for the best albums, songs, and music stories throughout the year. Inclusion in this category is the highest distinction we can bestow, and signals the most important music being released throughout the year. The RX is the music you need, right now.

In my review of Gunna’s last album, 2020’s Wunna, I wrote that he does just enough things right to warrant multiple listens and his inclusion in the debate over the best trap rappers. It has nearly been two years since then, but it has felt longer with a global pandemic, an attempted insurrection, and a half dozen natural disasters that have made finding moments of pure joy imperative to get through the slog. Gunna’s new album DS4EVER has become one of those bright spots for many fans, again showing just enough artistic evolution to shine even in comparison to his last effort.

Don’t expect to hear very much topical material, though. While Gunna has expanded the scope of his philanthropy over the past few years, even earning recognition from his hometown for his community-building efforts, his music remains focused on flaunting the trappings of wealth. He shines the most, though, when he stretches outside the boundaries of his comfort zone. On the illuminating “Livin Wild,” he details a harrowing near-death experience which contrasts sharply with the flexes of the album’s first four tracks.

“I just left the hospital, might need another liver,” he admits. “Kidney failures, I tell you this sh*t couldn’t be no realer.” Gunna’s occasional substance abuse has been no secret but here he both reveals the inherent struggles and defiantly challenges detractors while referring to specific incidents from the past year. “I been getting high inconsistent, but you tryna show me different,” he raps. “Judging me for trying the whippets, I’m tired of the critics.”

Meanwhile, the vulnerable streak continues on the Jon B-sampling “You & Me” featuring Gunna’s maybe-girlfriend Chloe Bailey. A stark departure from his usual attitude toward romance — even elsewhere on this very album — “You & Me” finds Gunna waxing idealistic about the possibility of finding and keeping love. “I get selfish with you, babe, you mine, all mine,” he gushes. “Keep it solid, don’t tell lies / She one thousand with me and the best of all time.” Wisely, though, he keeps the track short, letting the sweetness have its moment before moving on to more pressing concerns.

With Gunna and the rest of his cohorts, you know it’s all about the money. From the opening track “Private Island,” DS4EVER finds Gunna sticking quite firmly to his guns. “Poochie Gown,” “A Lotta Money,” “25K Jacket,” and “Too Easy” — which features Future as well as a remix with frequent Gunna collaborator Roddy Ricch — are the standouts and the likely fan favorites here, containing effervescent boasts and thrilling production from the usual Atlanta trap rap suspects, Metro Boomin, Southside, and Wheezy. Here is where the album departs from the usual formula, however, with each of these producers taking a harder-edged approach to the usual melodic, fuzzy instrumentation they’ve employed on prior projects.

This gives Gunna the opportunity to play with a fresher delivery style. While fans have probably become accustomed to the singsong delivery Gunna has used on standout projects like Lil Baby joint project Drip Harder, Wunna, and 2021’s YSL Records compilation Slime Language 2, on DS4EVER, he often fires off a more clipped cadence, biting off the ends of words like Red Vines to emphasize the more forceful beats like “Mop” and “IDK That Bitch” with G Herbo. He even tries his hand at cooking up his own slang like mentor Young Thug on “Pushin P,” which finds Gunna, Future, and Young Thug employing a slurred, foggy take on the old-school in-and-out, pass-the-mic flow.

Although Gunna only takes a few steps into new territory, he executes well enough on the familiar material to justify hanging back from making any big artistic leaps. After all, he knows what his fans want, and he’s been clear from day one that he considers his job delivering on those expectations rather than making big statements — he leaves that work to his increasingly elaborate wardrobe and burgeoning philanthropic efforts. It’d be nice to see him branch out more in the future, but even if he doesn’t, his final Drip Season mixtape offers strong evidence that he’ll at least keep creating the music he’s known for at a high level for a while.

Gunna Releases The Deluxe Edition Of ‘DS4EVER’ With Four New Songs

Gunna is only four days away from the release of his new album DS4EVER but he’s already released the deluxe edition of the album with four new songs. Unlike many deluxe editions, rather than throwing the new tracks at the beginning or end of the album, he mixes them in, making for a fun sort of treasure hunt for fans.

“All The Money” has been inserted between “Private Island” and “Pushin P,” while “Push Start” makes an appearance between “Poochie Gown” and “Mop” featuring Young Thug. The remaining new songs are “Banking On Me” and “Occupation,” which features one of Gunna’s fellow YSL artists, Strick. You can check out the revamped tracklist below.

Gunna is clearly going all-in on his latest project after calling it the final entry into his Drip Season mixtape series. In addition to inviting new guest artists such as Chloe Bailey — who Gunna is rumored to be dating after they were recently seen holding hands –, he’s also released videos for the “Too Easy” remix featuring Future and Roddy Ricch and the revelatory “Livin Wild.”

And while the rollout for the album seems far from finished, it appears we’ll be seeing more of Gunna throughout 2022, with an appearance planned for Cordae’s upcoming album and an episode of the HBO Max wilderness show Chillin Island.

Gunna Recounts A Harrowing Trip To The ICU In His ‘Livin Wild’ Video

In Gunna’s new video for “Livin Wild,” the rapper ends up with the ICU, from which his friends abruptly remove him against the advice of the attending physician. The video declares that it’s “based on a true story” — which is eerily close to that of Gunna’s rap game mentor Young Thug, who was hospitalized for liver and kidney failure and recounted the harrowing experience in April of 2020.

“Livin Wild” is the second video from Gunna’s new album, DS4EVER, after the “Too Easy” remix featuring Future and Roddy Ricch. Gunna released the album this past Friday after announcing its arrival on New Year’s Day. The project was the buzz of social media after two of its standout songs drew attention for different reasons. While “Pushin P” intrigued fans with its newfangled slang, “Thought I Was Playing” sparked a mini-debate about the trigger for Kanye West and Kim Kardashian’s recent divorce thanks to 21 Savage’s insistence that he dumped her.

Speaking of romantic entanglements, Gunna himself is at the center of speculation after he was seen holding hands with Beyonce protege Chloe — just after denying that the two were ever dating in the first place.

Gunna Finds A Variety Of Tasks ‘Too Easy’ In His New Video With Future And Roddy Ricch

Gunna, Future, and Roddy Ricch try their hands at numerous careers in their tongue-in-cheek “Too Easy” remix video, finding them all, well, too easy. The video is the latest from Gunna’s new mixtape DS4EVER, the fourth and final installment in his long-running Drip Season, which dropped today. While the song itself preceded the release, the video just arrived this morning to pull more eyeballs toward the highly anticipated project.

Among the tasks the three rappers try out, Gunna becomes a wilderness explorer, an expert mountaineer, and a touchdown-grabbing wide receiver. Meanwhile, Future joins Gunna as a pair of news anchors/weathermen who judge a beauty pageant and gets into some Scottish games, including tug-o-war, rock-throwing, and bagpiping. Roddy, meanwhile, becomes a lounge pianist — not far off from his real-life skillset — and gets his Wu-Tang Clan on at a Shaolin temple.

In addition to Future and Roddy, Gunna’s new project has also gotten attention for a number of its other guests including Young Thug, who raps with his protege Gunna on “Pushin P,” Chloe Bailey, who once again sparked dating rumors with Gunna after they were seen holding hands, and 21 Savage, whose punchline comparing Ye and Kim’s divorce to a dropped murder weapon sparked a mini-debate on Twitter about who actually did the dumping.

21 Savage Insists Kanye Dumped Kim (And Not The Other Way Around) On Gunna’s New Album

It’s often said that there are two sides to every story and in the case of Kanye West’s ongoing divorce from Kim Kardashian, it looks like he’s sharing his side with friends and collaborators. Although the initial reports had Kim filing for divorce, citing many “little things” that made their differences more apparent, at least one of Kanye’s rapper homies believes it went the other way around.

On “Thought I Was Playing” from Gunna’s new mixtape DS4EVER, fellow Atlanta rapper 21 Savage uses the celebrity split as the subject for a twisted punchline: “SF90 cost a M, dumped his Glock like Ye did Kim.” Fans on Twitter who caught the line sparked a lighthearted but spirited debate about just who dumped whom.

Of course, both stars have since seemingly moved on. Kim has apparently been dating comedian Pete Davidson after remarking that she had no intention of reconciling with Kanye, and while Kanye has made repeated public overtures, even going so far as declaring that God would reunite the couple, he has since also been seen out with a new romantic interest. Actress Julia Fox, with whom Kanye had dinner in New York City, described their date in glowing terms, prompting some fans to give their skeptical impressions of the pairing, drawing comparisons with Fox’s character’s relationship in Uncut Gems.
