New Music Friday: Mozzy’s ‘Survivor’s Guilt,’ Slump6s Drops ‘Genesis,’ Lil Uzi Avalanche, Another Mac Miller Posthumous Gift, And More!

New Music Friday

This week had so much new music that we needed to drop a caveat:  In more ways than one, it is great ensuring there is something for everyone, no matter the mood you’re in. Get that cold drink, chill by that pool, whip out those AirPods, and set it to the right volume to any […]

Lute And Cozz Work Out Their Issues In The Therapeutic ‘Eye To Eye’ Video

Music can be therapy, but sometimes, you just need to talk to somebody about your problems. That’s the theme of Lute’s new video for “Eye To Eye” from his 2021 album Gold Mouf. Featuring fellow Dreamville rapper Cozz, “Eye To Eye” finds Lute and Cozz recalling their various issues, from their traumatic experiences to their relationships with women, determining to do better than they have in the past. Incidentally, the song’s release nearly coincided with both admitting to seeking therapy.

So it fits that the theme of the video reflects the theme of the song, putting both the rappers across from a therapist, who helps them with those problems — Lute individually, Cozz with his partner. The video finds each man reflecting on his respective situation through a variety of scenarios including a studio session, late-night visitations with their respective partners, and meditating in a room full of plants. The end of the video breaks the fourth wall, as the video wraps and they leave their adjacent sets, dapping each other up and hugging it out.

Although both released records in 2021 (Cozz released his Fortunate EP in December), neither sat still for too long, joining their labelmates in contributing to Dreamville’s D-Day: A Gangsta Grillz mixtape.

Bas Releases His New EP ‘[BUMP] Pick Me Up’ Feat. Gunna, Ari Lennox & More

Today, Paris-born Queen’s NYC-raised rapper Bas has released his long-awaited new 4-track EP titled “[BUMP] Pick Me Up” on Dreamville Records via Interscope. The short but sweet release has a feature on every track, with a star-studded lineup of Lil Tjay, J. Cole, Gunna, Ari Lennox, and Galimatias all squeezed into four tracks clocking in total at just 12-minutes. Watch the lead single to the release “[Admire Her]” featuring YSL Records’ Gunna below;

Bas released the track “The Jackie” featuring both J. Cole and Lil Tjay last Summer in July to critical acclaim, meaning that this new EP is more of a teaser to a more extended project in the works. Fans can expect a new album from Bas well in the works, having recently teased the news since his last full-length dropped in August of 2018 in the 14-track “Milky Way” album that charted well both in America and internationally. Revisit the melodic triple threat from last year below.

Cozz Drops Some Bouncy ‘Juice Bars’ On ‘UPROXX Sessions’

Fresh off the release of his new EP Fortunate, Inglewood rapper Cozz drops by UPROXX Sessions for a performance of the EP’s bouncy track “Juice Bars.” Over a funky, bass-driven beat produced by Meez, the Dreamville rapper delivers his take on the label’s lyrical formula, boasting, “Every day of the week, I get to play with the beat.”

Fortunate, released December 2, marks Cozz’s return to the spotlight after taking a three-year break since the release of his Dreamville debut album, Effected. Since then, he had a star turn on the Dreamville compilation Revenge Of The Dreamers III with the eyebrow-raising “Lambo Truck” alongside TDE rapper Reason. Cozz’s comeback proper kicked off in October this year with the release of the EP’s title song, which he quickly followed up with “Addicted,” the project’s second single.

This past weekend, he performed songs from the EP, as well as “Lambo Truck,” at Rolling Loud California in San Bernardino, receiving a warm response from the crowd that suggests anticipation for his next full-length project has increased as a result of his latest release. Watch him perform “Juice Bars” above.

UPROXX Sessions is Uproxx’s performance show featuring the hottest up-and-coming acts you should keep an eye on. Featuring creative direction from LA promotion collective, Ham On Everything, and taking place on our “bathroom” set designed and painted by Julian Gross, UPROXX Sessions is a showcase of some of our favorite performers, who just might soon be yours, too.

Cozz Takes Stock Of His Life And The Lessons He’s Learned On The Introspective ‘Fortunate’ EP

It just might be Dreamville season again. Only two months after North Carolina Dreamville rapper Lute released his long-awaited second studio album, Gold Mouf, another member of the throwback rap-centric crew has returned with his own comeback project. Inglewood native Cozz, who featured on Gold Mouf alongside Lute, has released his own EP, Fortunate, marking the end of a three-year wait for the follow-up to his 2018 debut album, Effected.

The EP consists of seven songs, including the previously released singles “Fortunate” and “Addicted.” It features production by longtime Dreamville beatmaker Elite, frequent crew colalborator T-Minus, and the group’s team captain J. Cole, as well as a guest appearance by fellow West Coast veteran YG, who appears on “Control Problems.”

Unfortunately, the release had a technical hiccup, resulting in the track order getting mixed up on DSPs. Cozz addressed the issue on Twitter, writing, “No lie I’m frustrated cuz I had an idea of how I want people to hear this ep but technical difficulties ddnt allow that to happen. What’s below is the order so if u care enough, listen as is but if not f*ck it the music is the same. This will be fixed by Friday enjoy. In other words the order is completely wrong on every listening platform.”

Fortunate is out now via Dreamville/Interscope Records. You can stream it here.

Cozz Is Grateful To Be Alive In His Moody ‘Fortunate’ Video

Inglewood-bred Dreamville rapper Cozz returns with a moody video for his new single, “Fortunate,” after having a relatively quiet couple of years since his last album. The video finds Cozz sitting in a wrecked car, having apparently survived a harrowing front-end collision. Throughout the video, Cozz expresses his gratitude and grapples with his vices, a struggle represented by haunting religious imagery and his pained crooning on the song’s confessional chorus.

When we last heard from Cozz, he was cutting up on the Dreamville compilation Revenge Of The Dreamers III, threatening to rob his own label boss alongside fellow West Coaster Reason on “Lambo Truck” and dismissing pushy groupies on “Don’t Hit Me Right Now” alongside Bas, Buddy, Guapdad 4000, and Yung Baby Tate. Before that, he established himself as a lyrical force with his debut album, Effected which featured both his Dreamville boss J. Cole and King of LA, Kendrick Lamar.

More recently, Cozz could be heard assisting his Dreamville compatriot Lute on his new album Gold Mouf and Uproxx regulars may recognize him making a few appearances in our music video show React Like You Know, joining our panel of 20-somethings to give his impressions on videos like Fabolous’ “So Into You.”

Dreamville Brings A Mini-Festival To Red Rocks Amphitheatre In Colorado

Although the pandemic forced the cancelation of numerous concerts, festivals, and tours, as live entertainment returns, fans who missed out on last year’s festivities are getting some consolation. One of the festivals that was canceled, the Dreamville Festival, is sort of coming back in a smaller capacity as Dreamville On The Rocks, a one-day mini-fest featuring nearly the entire roster at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado. The label’s social accounts posted a motion flyer providing the details and revealing the lineup and date: October 23, 2021.

Although team captain J. Cole is notably absent — perhaps he’ll be participating in some NBA team’s fall training camp, hoping to continue his professional basketball career — all of the label’s other roster mainstays are accounted for. Ari Lennox, Bas, Cozz, Earthgang, JID, Lute, and Omen are all listed, which could also be a good sign for expected releases from each after a year of relative inactivity (although Earthgang and JID both participated in the Spillage Village album Spilligion in 2020).

Dreamville On The Rocks doesn’t appear to be as big of an event as the original Dreamville Festival was planned to be with no announced guests from outside the label and only one day, but perhaps the crew is using it as a dry-run to shake off the rust before announcing a larger event down the line. Tickets go on sale Friday at 10 am. You can find more information at Dreamville.com.
