Donald Glover’s New Childish Gambino Album ‘Atavista’ Is Here, Along With A Quinta Brunson-Starring Video

Yesterday (May 12), fans uncovered some info about Atavista, an upcoming Childish Gambino project from Donald Glover, and it turned out to be true: Glover released the album at midnight today.

He wrote on social media, “this album is the finished version of ‘3.15.20’, the album i put out 4 years ago. there’s a special vinyl coming soon w/ visuals for each song. the all new childish gambino album comes out in the summer.”

There’s also a new video for the Young Nudy collab “Little Foot Big Foot.” The visual itself is a collaboration between two TV comedy icons: Glover (of Community and Atlanta) and Quinta Brunson (of Abbott Elementary), the latter of whom plays the role of a club manager. The black-and-white visual takes place in the swing music era and sees Glover as part of a band playing at a club to unimpressed patrons. Partway through, though, things take an unexpected twist.

Glover has been teasing a lot lately. He announced a tour in April, but just the existence of it and nothing specific like dates or cities. Also that month, he explained, “We’re releasing Atavista, but after that, there’s the final Childish Gambino album — a soundtrack for the fans.”

Childish Gambino & His Politically Charged “This Is America” Video Receive Harsh Retrospective Reviews On Its Sixth Anniversary

Childish Gambino is an artist who has certainly been polarizing for hip-hop fans. Overall, there are some fans who believe that he is one of the best artists out. Meanwhile, there are others who call him “corny” and have always thought that to be the case. His early output is certainly questionable, but over the years, he has delivered some big hits, and that is undeniable. One of those big hits is “This Is America.” The track dropped back in 2018 alongside a powerful music video that became the talk of the music world for months following its release.

On Saturday, the song celebrated its sixth anniversary. This was highlighted on Twitter, although, the reactions were anything but positive. At the time of the song’s release, Donald Trump was in office, and there was a strong artistic reaction against that, understandably so. However, even progressives and liberals feel as though the criticism levied in this song are a product of its time, and don’t hold up to scrutiny. This sentiment was made abundantly clear in the quote tweets of the post below. Although beware, you will see plenty of Conservatives voicing their disdain for hip-hop as a whole. A disdain that would still be there regardless of this song’s existence.

Childish Gambino “This Is America”

There was certainly some pushback to the retrospective analysis of this song. Many questioned where the hate was coming from. Others simply noted that Twitter loves to pretend it didn’t like something that was popular a few years ago. This is certainly true, and if you’ve ever been on Twitter, you know that most people are incredibly cynical over there. Regardless, “This Is America” has already made a significant impact on popular culture, and nothing can take that away from it.

Some Believe The Song Was Simply A Product Of Its Time

Let us know what you think about the retrospective analysis of this song, in the comments section down below. Do you believe that people are being way too harsh on this song? What do you think of “This Is America” all of these years later? Does it hold up? Additionally, stay tuned to HNHH for the latest news and updates from around the music world. We will continue to keep you informed on all of your favorite artists and their upcoming projects.

Donald Glover Teases A Childish Gambino Tour And Reveals A Couple Things About The Run

With Donald Glover devoting much of his energy to acting in recent years, the future of his music as Childish Gambino has remained uncertain. There has been some clarity lately, though: Earlier this month, Glover broke down his plan for his final two albums as Childish Gambino. Now he has shared even more about what his upcoming Gambino goings-on will entail.

During a recent GILGA Radio broadcast, an advertisement-style announcement said, “Childish Gambino New World Tour this summer. Coming to an arena near you. Are you ready?” Glover later shared an Instagram post about it, featuring a simple graphic for The New World Tour and a link to a website, thenewworldtour.com. There, there’s an email sign-up form to be updated with more information when it becomes available.

So, to summarize: What we know about the tour right now is that it’s called The New World Tour, it will take place in arenas, and it’s set to kick off this summer. Dates and information about tickets have yet to be revealed.

Elsewhere during that same broadcast, Glover teased two new songs, one featuring Kanye West and the other featuring Kid Cudi. As NME notes, the Kudi collab is called “Warlords” and previously leaked in 2021.

Why Does Kid Cudi Have Beef With Childish Gambino?

2024 has been beef season in the rap world but while everyone from Ice Spice to The Weeknd is embroiled in some type of feud or another (and Drake is somehow embroiled in at least five at the same time) at least one artist out there doesn’t want smoke with anybody, least of all the guy who seems to have it out for him the worst. During a recent live stream, Donald Glover invited Kid Cudi to have a conversation with him to hash out their issues, saying “I’m not here for the beef.” But why does Kid Cudi have beef with Childish Gambino in the first place?

The origin of their issues is unclear; in an interview last year, Glover recalled being booed while opening for Cudi on tour back when they were both still relatively new artists. However, neither had ever publicly intimated any discord existed between them until a fan suggested the two collaborate on a project on Twitter in February, or at least release their song “Warlords,” which leaked online but hadn’t received an official release date. In response, Cudi quoted back, “Im cool.”

Fans immediately thought that the pair had some sort of friction, but in reality, it could be as simple as Cudi being focused on his own projects — which do technically compete with Glover’s. Cudi has a full slate of work coming up, from his Insano tour to a new album along with a bunch of film and television projects still in the works. It could be just a predilection for pugilism, as some fans think; just this past January, Cudi had a heated back-and-forth with Lupe Fiasco.

Kid Cudi Seemingly Has Beef With Donald Glover, But Glover Just Isn’t Interested

Back in February, an X (formerly Twitter) user tweeted, “@KiDCuDi You and Gambino gotta work on something whether it’s TV, movies, or music we’d love to see/hear it! Your guys’ song Warlords needs an official release!” Kid Cudi shared the tweet and replied, “Im cool.”

This seemingly indicated Cudi has some sort of issue with Donald Glover/Childish Gambino, although based on publicly available information, it’s not clear why. Whatever the case, Glover has addressed it.

As HotNewHipHop notes, during a recent Instagram Live broadcast, a fan asked Glover for his thoughts on Cudi. Glover said, “Kid Cudi, if you got a problem, like, I’m not here for the beef. Just, like, talk to me. […] ‘Cause it’s like, we don’t have to agree on everything, but we also don’t have to be like, ‘Yeah, when I see you, we have to want to kill each other.’ I don’t… man, life is too short.”

Back in the day, early in Glover’s music career, he opened for Cudi and didn’t have an awesome time. He reminisced about that last year, saying, “At the time, I had a full band and a violinist. I just kept turning to the band and telling them, ‘Next song! Next song!’ I put on a really intense show through the boos.”
