The first images just dropped for “The Fire Inside”, the upcoming biopic about boxer Claressa Shields, written by Barry Jenkins and starring Ryan Destiny and Brian Tyree Henry. This film, previously titled “Flint Strong”, marks the directorial debut of Rachel Morrison, the Oscar-nominated cinematographer recognized for her work on “Mudbound”, making her the first woman ever nominated for Best Cinematography. Morrison has also worked on notable films like Ryan Coogler’s “Black Panther” and “Fruitvale Station”. So this all sounds like a big deal. Here’s more …

THE FIRE INSIDE is the inspirational true story of Claressa Shields, arguably the greatest female boxer of all time. Claressa, a high school Junior from Flint, Michigan, aided by her tough-love coach, Jason Crutchfield, pushes past all limitations to become the first American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in boxing. But even at the pinnacle of success, Claressa has to reckon with the fact that not all dreams are created equal, and the real fight has only just begun.

Get this, Claressa Shields herself is involved in the project as an executive producer. The film is set to premiere in September at the Toronto International Film Festival and will hit theaters this Christmas.

“The Fire Inside” has been in development for several years, with Jenkins attached to the project since the awards campaign for “Moonlight”, before its Oscar wins. The biopic draws from the 2015 documentary “T-Rex”, which chronicles Shields’ journey. Directed by Drea Cooper and Zackary Canepari, “T-Rex” was a tri-continental effort (North America, Europe, and Asia) that began production in 2012 and successfully raised $64,000 through crowdfunding, supplemented by major funding from Independent Lens.

Universal initially acquired the rights to Shields’ life story and the documentary in 2016 before the project moved to Amazon MGM.

High Profile Launch of Doodles Records Includes Records From Lil Wayne, Coi Leray and Lil Yachty

image

Doodles, are not just a popular crossbreed of dog, it’s also the name of a budding entertainment company that touts Pharrell Williams holding court as chief branding officer. And that company with the interesting choice in branding just announced the creation of Doodles Records is a collaboration with Sony’s Orchard. Kicking things off out the gate, the new label’s inaugural project is for the soundtrack for the upcoming short film “Dullsville and the Doodleverse.” Listen, goldendoodles, bernadoodles and even cavapoos, are all the rage these days, so they got something right with that name. Or maybe they mean when you’re doodling on a sketch board. Either way, pretty cool.

Get this to celebrate its high profile launch, Doodles Records will release a three-song EP for “Dullsville and the Doodleverse.” And they ain’t playing, as reported in Variety, the EP features tracks from notable artists: Coi Leray and Pharrell’s “Not in the Store” is set to drop in early August, Lil Wayne, Lil Yachty, and Kyle Richh’s “Can’t Hold Me Down” will follow in late August, and Swae Lee, Lil Yachty, and Pharrell’s “Doodleverse (Draw Me Closer)” is slated for release in September. Pretty sick lineup in you ask us.

“Music is and will continue to be a core pillar of Doodles, so we’re thrilled to announce the official formation of Doodles Records,” said Julian Holguin, CEO of Doodles. “Releasing music with some of the most legendary and relevant artists in the world on our first project is a dream come true and a massive source of pride. Moving forward, we will fuse music, animation, and technology to create groundbreaking content experiences that will empower artists and their communities.”

To keep the rollout refreshing, each release from Doodles Records will be accompanied by animated videos, creatively directed by Doodles founder Burnt Toast in collaboration with their in-house animation studio, Golden Wolf. The short film “Dullsville and the Doodleverse” will premiere in October. Music and animation promo to invigorate a short film release, is smart marketing if you ask us.

They’re not done, alongside the hot new label announcement, Doodles introduced DoodlesTV, a direct-to-community platform, another trending tech avenue, that provides users, fans and anyone who’s curious with early access to music releases, video premieres, and more. Early adopting fans can purchase a DoodlesTV season one all-access media pass next week, giving them access to view “Dullsville and the Doodleverse” before its official release. Dope moves all around.

Watch: Ryan Leslie Honors Cassie in Performance on Tiny Desk

Screen Shot 2024 07 26 at 5.56.48 PM

Ryan Leslie paid tribute to Cassie Ventura during his Tiny Desk performance, which was released on Friday, July 26.

During his set on the NPR showcase, Leslie honored Cassie by performing their 2006 single “Long Way 2 Go” followed by “Addiction” a hit song that features Cassie on the hook.

Let’s take ya’ll back … Leslie and Cassie’s professional relationship began in 2006 with the release of her debut single, “Me & U,” which Ryan wrote and produced along with most of her debut album.

If you recall, Leslie released his self-titled debut album in 2009, solidifying his career with a series of chart-topping hits, innovative ventures in tech, and collaborations with top artists. His discography includes four albums, notably his acclaimed sophomore album, *Transition*.

What’s crazy is over the years, Leslie openly discussed Cassie leaving him for Diddy. There’s context to that assertion and it may not be that cut and dry but that’s what Leslie as alluded to.

Thankfully for Cassie’s sake, she finally left Diddy and ended their relationship in 2018 after ten years.

As you may know, in 2023, Cassie filed a lawsuit against Diddy, accusing him of sexual assault, sex trafficking, rape, and physical abuse, which was later settled.

Get this, following the lawsuit settlement, Leslie shared plans to collaborate with Cassie again and possibly plan a tour. Speaking to TMZ, he said, “I think that was much further past after our working relationship … The last conversation we had, she’s planning a tour.”

Check out Ryan Leslie’s Tiny Desk below, it’s pretty cool TBH.

Drake Producer Gordo Proclaims His Friend Has Been ‘Happy as S—’ Since Feud Started

Screen Shot 2024 07 26 at 1.52.56 PM

Let bygones be bygones, sometimes. That said, maybe Drake is ready to move past his feud with Kendrick Lamar. According to his producer and longtime friend, Gordo, he provided an exclusive update to PEOPLE on the “Certified Lover Boy” artist, dishing that Drizzy has been moved on from the rap beef.

“He’s been past it,” said Gordo, a Grammy-nominated producer. “He just finished the longest tour ever [It’s All A Blur Tour – Big As The What?]. I think he’s just chilling now.”

Gordo went on to claim Drake has maintained a positive attitude. “Ever since all this has happened… I’ve seen him happier,” Gordo noted. “It’s really weird. He’s pretty jolly… The internet makes it seem like, ‘Oh, that photo, he’s all sad and stuff.’ That’s just a bad photo from a bad camera. But because it’s him, it’s put under a magnifying glass like, ‘Oh, look at his eyes. He’s looking a little droopy. He hasn’t slept.’ But the guy’s been happy as can be, to be honest. He’s chilling.”

Ya’ll believe him? Drizzy has been winning for so long, it all seems likely to us.

While working on Gordo’s upcoming debut album under his new alias, Diamante, the two have spent more time together. The 15-track house music album, set to release on Friday, July 26, features contributions from Drake, who previously collaborated with Gordo on his 2022 dance album, “Honestly, Nevermind”.

Gordo took PEOPLE back on their long-standing friendship, which began when he snuck into one of Drake’s concerts. “I remember I snuck into his concert one time when I was younger,” Gordo recalled. “I was always friends with people who were his tour managers or something connected to him, so I would see him every once in a while, take a little photo here and there. Then we connected and slowly, over time, we became really close.”

Good for Gordo and Drake for seemingly keeping it all positive despite what other narrative is floating out in these streets.

Beyoncé’s ‘Freedom’ Sees Jump in Streaming After Use by Kamala Harris’ Campaign

Music Beyoncé Kamala Harris

Let us find out the “Kamala Harris effect” is not only a real thing but influencing streaming data. That’s because Beyoncé’s song “Freedom” is experiencing a noticeable increase in streams after the Democratic presidential candidate used the 2016 track during her first campaign appearances this week.

Just check the data from Luminate that reveals that U.S. on-demand streams for “Freedom” skyrocketed by over 1,300 percent from Sunday to Tuesday, climbing from 16,600 streams to 235,400 in just a few days.

“Freedom,” featuring Kendrick Lamar and part of Beyoncé’s sixth album “Lemonade,” was the anthem playing as Harris visited her campaign headquarters in Delaware, shortly after President Joe Biden announced he would not seek reelection. There goes Kendrick again.

As reported by CNN, Beyoncé gave her blessing for Harris to use “Freedom” as her walk-out song just hours before her appearance and has allowed its continued use throughout her campaign.

Get this, the song seems to resonate with Harris, who also featured it in a campaign video released earlier on Thursday. While Beyoncé hasn’t officially endorsed Harris’s presidential bid, she supported Biden and Harris in the 2020 election, urging her fans to vote.

ICYMI, many celebrities and musicians are rallying behind Harris’s candidacy. Charli XCX notably referenced her latest album “Brat” by tweeting, “Kamala IS brat,” which led Harris’s campaign team to adopt the album’s visual identity for their header on X (formerly Twitter). Crossover appeal. That’s how you win elections.

Other musicians, including Ariana Grande, Olivia Rodrigo, Barbra Streisand, and Lizzo, have also shown their support or praised Harris’s policies. We are here for it. All of it.

Anthony Davis Cracks Joke About LeBron’s ‘Age’ Following Latest Team USA Win

image

ICYMI, team USA narrowly defeated Germany with a score of 92-88 in a pre-Olympic showcase on Monday, with LeBron James once again taking center stage. Sheesh, these games are CLOSE! Either Team USA is not quite gelling or the rest of the world has caught up. Thinking it’s the latter TBH.

James dropped 20 points, grabbed six rebounds, and dished out four assists, shooting an impressive 8-of-11 from the field in just 18 minutes of play. Brown is the oldest player in the NBA. Absolutely insane what he can still do.

LeBron’s performance has been a constant in Team USA’s showcase games, earning recognition from everyone, including his Los Angeles Lakers teammate, Anthony Davis.

Davis, who has also been a standout player for Team USA, has embraced his role off the bench, allowing James to shine. In the game against Germany, Davis contributed 10 points, seven rebounds, and one block in 14 minutes.

Get this, as they headed back to the locker room after the win, Davis joked about LeBron’s ability to perform at such a high level even in his mid-40s.

“He’s still doing it at 45” Davis, hilariously said. LeBron is not but you get the sarcasm, right?

Davis humorously acknowledged James’ continued dominance despite being the team’s oldest player by several years. We said it so, it’s only right Davis did too, since he’s so close to the punchline.

Over their five up and down seasons together in Los Angeles, Davis and James have developed one of the NBA’s strongest teammate bonds. While others might hesitate to joke about James’ age, because he can cook just about anyone in the league, Davis has no qualms about playfully ribbing his older teammate, a testament to their close friendship.

James, now 39 and entering his 22nd NBA season, continues to lead and excel for a Team USA squad favored to win gold in Paris. Davis’ jokes, born out of deep admiration, highlight the remarkable longevity and enduring talent of LeBron James. Respect your elders, and don’t forget to crack a joke here and there along the way.
