2Pac Producer Sues Over “Dear Mama” Royalties

Master Tee, one of the producers of 2Pac’s 1995 single “Dear Mama”, has filed a lawsuit over unpaid royalties generated by the song. The suit names fellow producer Tony Pizarro as the primary defendant. However, it also names Disney and the Hughes Brothers for their recent 2Pac docuseries of the same name. Master Tee claims that he did not realize he was owed publishing royalties until the series premiered in April.

“Master Tee was never properly and fully credited with his publishing copyright from the writing and creation of the music of ‘Dear Mama’. Instead, a self-serving group, led by an upstart music producer, Tony D. Pizarro, conspired with executives at Interscope Records and Universal Music Group, misappropriated Master Tee’s publishing copyright and Master Recording Copyright and assumed the identity of writer/publisher of ‘Dear Mama’s’ music,” Tee’s attorneys wrote.

Dear Mama Gets Perfect Score, Award Nods

Dear Mama was a cultural phenomenon when it was released on FX earlier this year. Directed by Allen Hughes, the series explored the separate lives of and deep relationship between Pac and his mother, Afeni. It broke a premiere record when it was first released, with over 300,000 tuning in to watch the first episode. Furthermore, it would go on to achieve a perfect rating on Rotten Tomatoes. TIME‘s Judy Berman called the series, “One of the most thorough, sensitive portraits I’ve seen of an artist who has by now been eulogized for longer than he was alive. And of the remarkable woman who created him.”

Now, as the musical awards season rolls around, Dear Mama is once again back in the conversation. 2Pac could win his first-ever Grammy nearly 30 years after his death thanks to the documentary. Pac is nominated for the 2024 Grammy for “Best Must Film Category”. He will compete against David Bowie and Little Richard for the award. Pac had been previously nominated six times for various Grammys but has never won.

Tupac Seeks First Every Grammy Win With His Seventh Nomination

Despite the fact that Tupac passed away nearly 30 years ago, the rapper is still a cultural mainstay. Despite being most well known for his music, he never actually won a Grammy during his lifetime. He was nominated five times during his life in 1996 and 1997 but was never able to secure a victory. Now, over 20 years later, the rapper has secured his second posthumous nomination and seventh over all which could net him his first ever win.

The Grammy Academy just announced the nominations for the 2024 edition of the show. Included among them is the Best Music Film category where Pac finds himself scoring a new nomination. The acknowledgement is for Dear Mama: The Saga Of Afeni And Tupac Shakur, a documentary miniseries about the rapper and his mother. Among the nominees is another major player in hip-hop, Kendrick Lamar with the live performance of his new album Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers. Tupac is also not the only posthumous nominee with the David Bowie film Moonage Daydream also securing a nomination.

Tupac Could Win His First Grammy Next Year

Much of the news recently surrounding Tupac has been about his murder investigation. After repeatedly discussing his role in the murder online for years Keefe D was finally arrested a few months ago. After multiple delays Keefe finally appeared in court earlier this month and made the expected move of pleading guilty.

There’s also been quite a bit of news coming from Jaida Pinkett Smith. She did a series of bombshell interviews promoting her new memoir which included lots of previously unknown details about Pac. She believed that he and Will Smith would have been friends and revealed that he once proposed to her while in jail but she turned him down. What do you think of Tupac potentially winning his first Grammy almost 30 years after his death for a documentary about his life? Let us know in the comment section below.

Allen Hughes Says Snoop Dogg “Dimmed His Light” To Let Tupac “Shine”

Snoop Dogg is going to be the star of an upcoming film helmed by director Allen Hughes. The biopic on Snoop’s life is set to be the first project under Death Row Pictures, and Snoop is also credited as one of the executive producers of the movie. The film follows Snoop’s recent acquirement of Death Row Records in 2022. In a recent conversation on the Rap Radar Podcast, Hughes explains how he has a distinctive insight into Snoop Dogg’s connection with Tupac. He claimed that Snoop Dogg, even though he was one of the prominent figures in hip-hop during his time at Death Row Records, willingly let his labelmate Tupac shine.

“You got a guy that was the rockstar of that era,” Hughes said in the interview. “And in the same era, he’s on trial for murder … and thank God, [he] beats the case. And then you got all that little window where Snoop dimmed his light for Tupac.” “I never understood that back then,” he continued. “I remember Snoop just dimming his light and letting Tupac shine when Snoop was the guy, ya know?”

Allen Hughes Speaks On Upcoming Snoop Dogg Biopic

Allen Hughes, who’s known for his other films Menace II Society and The Book of Eli, is no stranger to making films for the big screen. His previous credits include telling the stories of other hip-hop moguls, including Tupac. In fact, earlier this year he released the docuseries Dear Mama, which received tons of praise for telling the story of Tupac and his mother Afeni. The docuseries, which premiered on FX and Hulu, earned a 100% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The unscripted series showcased the relationship between Tupac and his mom, but also took a deep dive into Afeni’s profound history as a Black Panther.

Now, Snoop Dogg’s story is one step closer to landing on the big screen. The project is still untitled and in the works, and it’s in collaboration with Death Row Pictures and Universal Pictures. “I waited a long time to put this project together because I wanted to choose the right director, the perfect writer, and the greatest movie company I could partner with that could understand the legacy that I’m trying to portray on screen, and the memory I’m trying to leave behind,” said Snoop Dogg in a previous statement. “It was the perfect marriage. It was holy matrimony, not holy macaroni.” Stay tuned to HNHH for more updates on the biopic.

2Pac’s “Dear Mama” Docuseries Nominated For An Emmy

Recently, it was revealed that the Allen Hughes-directed docuseries on the life of 2Pac has been nominated for an Emmy. Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni and Tupac Shakur was released in April of this year on Hulu. The series’ first episode became the most-viewed premiere of an unscripted series in FX history shortly after its release. The show is nominated for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series. It will go up against with 100 Foot Wave, the U.S. And The Holocaust, 1619 Project, and Secrets Of The Elephants. The 2023 Emmy Awards ceremony is set to take place in September of this year.

The president of FX Entertainment, Nick Grad, previously spoke on the success of the docuseries. “It’s only fitting that Allen Hughes definitive piece on Tupac and Afeni Shakur delivered a record performance for us and it speaks to Tupac’s enduring legacy,” he explained. “Allen’s examination of Tupac viewed through the prism of his mother Afeni is a fascinating take that really gets beneath the education and experience that shaped his life and inspired him to become one of the greatest artists ever.”

Allen Hughes Shares News Of Nomination

Though the show was extremely well-received by fans and critics alike, there was one person who was underwhelmed by Dear Mama. Last month, 2Pac’s biological father Billy Garland weighed in on the series, revealing that he was actually “disappointed” by it. “We did an interview for about two hours,” Garland explained, “After I saw the interview in the documentary, I was slightly disappointed, let’s just say that. I didn’t like it. It was more about something else, than about 2Pac, if you know what I’m saying.”

“If I knew it was about ‘Dear Mama,’ I might’ve still did it, but I probably wouldn’t have,” he continued, “Not for nothing.” He went on to explain that he didn’t like suggestions that his son was bipolar. Garland says that 2Pac’s behavior was only a reaction to the “betrayal” he had faced in his life.

[WATCH] 2Pac’s Father Thinks His Son’s Death was Orchestrated by the Government

2Pac’s Father Says He Was ‘Disappointed’ in ‘Dear Mama’ Documentary

In The Art of Dialogue‘s latest interview with Billy Garland, Tupac’s biological father details what he believes is the U.S. government’s involvement in his son’s death.

Garland believes that the death of his son was arranged by the government, who were following him throughout Las Vegas on the night he was killed, noting the infamous fight with Orlando Anderson should have never happened.

Also, in the conversation, Garland acknowledges Keefe D’s admitting to Anderson being the trigger man but wonders if that was a part of his deal.

“The government gave him the deal,” Garland said. “He [2Pac} was being tailed by the government the night of his assassination. He was being tailed by the government at Quad Studio. That’s a known fact. So I don’t know this guy Keefe. Maybe he had to say that to get out of some issue, I don’t know. I just know it looked like a setup to me. Somebody told this guy to stand there with the Death Row thing and it pursued to what we had, but I don’t think he had anything to do with the death of my son.”

Dear Mama, the docuseries on Tupac and Afeni Shakur, has received rave reviews online, but not everyone is fond of the story. In a conversation with The Art of Dialogue, Tupac’s biological father, Billy Garland, stated he was disappointed in the final product and would not have taken part if he had known the true direction.

“After I saw the interview in the documentary, I was slightly disappointed, let’s just say that,” Garland said. “I didn’t like it. It was more about something else, than about 2Pac, if you know what I’m saying. If I knew it was about ‘Dear Mama,’ I might’ve still did it, but I probably wouldn’t have. Not for nothing.”

Garland revealed Allen Hughes was invited to be in the documentary but didn’t know what it was exactly for. He also stated he was hesitant to do interviews because his answers always are pulled out of context. Later in the conversation, Garland would combat the thought that Tupac was bipolar, stating he “resented” the idea.

2Pac’s Father Admits He Was “Upset” Over “Dear Mama”

2Pac’s father, Billy Garland, says he was “upset” about being labeled a “coward” on the late rapper’s song “Dear Mama,” when it released back in 1995. Garland discussed the Me Against the World single during a recent interview on The Art of Dialogue. In the song, 2Pac raps, “No love for my daddy ’cause the coward wasn’t there,” before remarking that his father is dead.

“At first, I was upset ’cause I’m trying to see you,” he said. “But then it hit me! One, I ain’t dead and so you really didn’t know ’cause if you would’ve known me then you would’ve known that I wasn’t dead. So I knew there that someone had lied to him from that point.”

Garland continued: “And so later on when I found that out that someone did lie to him, that song made perfectly good sense. I understood it totally. When I hear it now, I laugh. I still love the fucking record. I love it, I do. I think it’s beautiful. I love all his music, though. I listen to his music daily — every freaking day, and I like it.”

He also reflected on his relationship with his son and how 2Pac’s fame prevented him from living a normal life. “I look in the videos and where he goes and I see him with the autographs, and I said, ‘That’s a different world,’” he said. “He could never be an individual that could relax in society, like he said he wanted to. He said, ‘Pops, I want to go home and watch TV but I know I can’t.’ He would tell me these things.”

2Pac’s Father On “Dear Mama”

Elsewhere in the interview, Garland criticized Hulu’s Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni & Tupac Shakur docuseries. He complained that Director Allen Hughes misled him during their interview. Garland also wasn’t happy with the implication that his son was bipolar, noting that it “broke my heart.”

Tupac’s Father Disappointed With Hulu’s “Dear Mama” Docuseries

In a recent interview, Tupac’s biological father, Billy Garland, shared his thoughts on Hulu’s docuseries on his son. Garland told The Art Of Dialogue that he initially denied an interview for the documentary, but was later convinced by director Allen Hughes. He stated that he didn’t know the footage itself would be used in Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni & Tupac Shakur, and was disappointed when he saw it in the series.

“We did an interview for about two hours,” he explained. Garland went on to say, “After I saw the interview in the documentary, I was slightly disappointed, let’s just say that. I didn’t like it. Garland’s Interview

It was also recently announced that Tupac will be receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Producer of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Ana Martinez, shared a statement with LA Times about the star. “Tupac Shakur was a rapper, actor, activist, poet, and revolutionary,” she said. Martinez added, “This iconic artist has continued to be part of the zeitgeist for decades after his passing and will continue to be an important cultural figure for many years to come. Surely, as one of L.A.’s own, Tupac’s star will be added to the list of most visited stars.”

The fact that the icon is only now receiving a star confused various social media users and artists. “It took them 25 years + to give Tupac a star on Hollywood Blvd? Y’all got him f****ed all the way up,” YG wrote on Twitter. Boosie Badazz also shared his thoughts, writing, “Tupac ain’t ON THE HOLLYWOOD WALK OF FAME?” He added, “WTF THE DISRESPECT. Don’t worry he saying F**K YALL from the Grave.”

Chance The Rapper Praises FX’s Tupac Documentary As The ‘Best’ He’s Seen ‘Without Exaggeration’

After FX aired its recent documentary, Dear Mama: The Saga Of Afeni & Tupac Shakur, other musicians are chiming in with their thoughts about the portrayal of the late musician. One of which is Chance The Rapper, who took to Twitter to express his love for the series.

“Did y’all watch the Tupac & Afeni Shakur documentary series yet?” Chance said. “What’s y’all honest thoughts? Cause I would say without exaggeration or hyperbole it’s probably the best documentary I’ve ever seen.”

And many seemed to agree with his assessment, as the show held a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes earlier this month, according to HipHopDX. The series has five parts and kicked off on April 21, exploring the relationship between Tupac and his mother. It also became the channel’s most-watched unscripted program in its history.

“I was glad to see a documentary that included Afeni’s story,” one fan replied to Chance’s post. “I’ve always felt that Tupac can be difficult to understand unless you know about the person that raised him. And to see how the struggle within the Black Panthers mirrored the struggle within 90s hip hop was incredible.”

“In the final episode they insinuated things about Death Row scheming on Tupac without elaborating which was disingenuous I feel,” another added. “But in whole it was the best Tupac documentary ever made.”

Chance The Rapper Praises 2Pac “Dear Mama” Documentary

Tupac’s story has been explored in various facets. Of course, much of his music was auto-biographical but he never penned an autobiography himself. Instead, we’ve trusted authors and filmmakers to take the information of his life available and transform it into a masterpiece, whether in the form of books or film. However, FX’s Dear Mama documentary is without a doubt an incredible glimpse into the relationship between 2Pac and his mother, Afeni Shakur. According to Chance The Rapper, it could take the cake for the best documentary he’s seen.

The Chicago-born rapper took to Twitter to share his thoughts on the documentary and it came with high praise. “Did y’all watch the Tupac & Afeni Shakur documentary series yet?” he wrote on Twitter. “What’s y’all honest thoughts? Cause I would say without exaggeration or hyperbole it’s probably the best documentary I’ve ever seen.” Like many fans of ‘Pac around the world, Chance The Rapper undoubtedly appreciates the in-depth look into the late rapper’s relationship with his mother and how it inevitably influenced his outlook of the world.

FX’s “Dear Mama” Docuseries Gains Praise

Chance certainly isn’t the only person who fell in love with the five-part docuseries on Tupac and Afeni Shakur. The show’s gained plenty of praise since the first episode dropped. Rotten Tomatoes revealed that the show had a 100% rating on their website. Ahead of the show’s debut, 2Pac’s manager, Leila Steinberg, described Dear Mama as “incredible.” “Part of [Alan] wanting to really do this piece was about healing, was about honesty, was about all of us looking at what happened. And, so I’m just saying this to say, he’s done an incredible piece,” Steinberg said.

Nick Grad, president of FX Entertainment, explained the importance of the show. Describing the show as a “definitive piece,” he detailed how Allen’s point-of-view helped take a deeper look into ‘Pac’s upbringing. “Allen’s examination of Tupac viewed through the prism of his mother Afeni is a fascinating take that really gets beneath the education and experience that shaped his life and inspired him to become one of the greatest artists ever,” he said.
