Usher Is A Multigenerational Once-In-A-Generation Talent

The word “legend” gets thrown around too loosely these days — as do the epithets “G.O.A.T.” (“greatest of all time”), “icon,” and “generational talent.” All too often, they get applied to artists or athletes in the midst of a great, maybe even mind-blowing run. But they are also applied too quickly, before the true test of iconic status can really be weathered or overcome: Time. Runs end; even some of the most paradigm-shifting talents can come and go in the matter of months or just years. Perhaps they set the foundation for true greatness to stand on after them, and that should be noted, but they probably shouldn’t be remembered as pillars or exemplars of their craft.

Wednesday night at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California, Usher Raymond earned — or rather, proved that he long ago already earned — all-time status with the Los Angeles stop of his aptly-titled Past Present Future Tour.

Here’s a thought exercise: Think of Usher’s contemporaries in R&B or pop music — the Justin Timberlakes, the Tevin Campbells, the myriad of quartets, trios, and boy bands to have come and gone since Usher’s debut in 1994 with his self-titled album. Stars have fallen; controversies, both fabricated and substantiated, have stalled ascensions; many have reached dizzying heights but become untethered from the craftsmanship that made them. Even beyond just smooth vocalists, Usher stands more or less alone.

Sure, Snoop Dogg has become a titan of pop culture, but his last RIAA-certified album was 2008’s Ego Trippin’. He’s better known for sports commentary than music at this point. Jay-Z? Hasn’t made a new album since 2017’s 4:44 (critically hailed though it was). And a handful of Usher’s contemporaries are so much worse off at this point — especially this year — that it’s better not to mention them at all.

But Usher, who garnered his first Hot 100 No. 1 in 1997 with “Nice & Slow,” and whose string of Hot 100 hits continues to this day with his independent album Coming Home and its lead single “Good Good,” has nearly outlasted them all. He’s retained his radio relevance while becoming the sort of towering titan of pop culture capable of headlining the Super Bowl Halftime Show, which he did this year to tremendous acclaim, reminding doubters that he’s got almost 30 years worth of hits to draw from. He did just that at BET Awards in June as he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

And he does it again on the Remy Martin-backed Past Present Future Tour, with a setlist reaching all the way back to his fresh-faced debut and running through R&B touchstones like “Burn,” “Lovers And Friends,” “My Way,” “Superstar,” “U Remind Me,” and “You Make Me Wanna…”; club classics like ““DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love” and “Yeah!”; and the sports stadium staple “OMG.”

Wednesday night, Usher also showcased the depth of his Rolodex, employing comedic chops alongside a bare-chested Kevin Hart, who teased the audience with his own rendition of “Nice & Slow” before being given the tongue-in-cheek boot by his host. Breakout star Tommy Richman put in an appearance to chirp his way through his smash “Million Dollar Baby” before Usher’s spiritual ancestor Stevie Wonder took to his piano at center stage, with the star of the evening doing duets to “Ribbon In The Sky” and more. Who else has that kind of pull, plus the generosity to cede the spotlight to his inspirations?

What impressed me the most is that I saw Usher do nearly the same setlist — albeit with a shuffled song order — at his Las Vegas residency not a full year ago. His stage at Intuit Dome struck me as being far less elaborate than the stage at Dolby Live at Park MGM — it certainly never transformed into a scale replica of his hometown’s Magic City, opting for a more (ahem) stripped-down approach — yet his performance was no less engaging. I didn’t think he’d have the room to pull off his roller skating tricks, and yet, he did. The crowd was inarguably larger than the capacity at his theater show, yet even the rafters were rollicking to “There Goes My Baby” and “Climax.”

The new venue undoubtedly helped; at some point during the show, I texted my editor to request that I only cover concerts at Intuit Dome for the rest of my tenure at Uproxx. Yes, there’s a little homerism from a lifelong Clippers fan, but the building’s design, intended to highlight the partisanship of a basketball home game, also lends itself toward amazing acoustics that complement its state-of-the-art, brand-new sound system, and terrific sight lines, as even sitting at a right angle to the stage, budged up against The Wall (inspired by college arenas), allowed a fantastic view of the stage and its recesses.

But, honestly, Usher doesn’t really need the help. Even without the massive, cutting-edge production on display, without the fleet of rigorously conditioned dancers, without the laser lights, and without the double-digit costume changes he effected throughout the night, Usher would be the consummate performer. He’s not just a once-in-a-generation talent, he’s a multigenerational one. He’s got a massive past catalog to draw from, but he’s also a modern hitmaker and superstar — and like his hero Stevie, he’s likely to remain one for generations to come.

Usher’s travel plans have been temporarily been paused. Yesterday (August 14) “Superstar” singer postponed the opening night of his Past Present Future Tour in Atlanta, Georgia. Unfortunately, for ticket holders, the show was pushed back. Sadly, it didn’t stop there.

Today (August 15), Usher took to X (formerly Twitter) to reveal that all of his Atlanta performances at State Farm Arena have been rescheduled due to an injury he sustained.

“Earlier this week, I suffered an injury to my neck while rehearsing to provide my fans with the greatest USHER show of all time,” he wrote. “My hope was that with physical therapy and medical treatment, I would be to overcome the injury and be ready for opening night. Unfortunately, the injury has not healed yet, and my doctors have instructed me not to perform any shows this week.”

The shows previously scheduled for August 14, 16 and 17, have been move to December 9, 10, and 12. According to Usher’s post, he should be cleared to hit the stage by his Washington, DC on August 20.

Did Usher Visit Russell Simmons In Bali?

From the beloved My Way The Vegas Residency to his record-setting Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show performance, Usher has had quite an impressive few years. But before the “Good Good” singer hits the road for his Past Present Future tour, Usher is using the downtime to enjoy some family time.

Based on Usher’s latest post online, it appears atop his list was celebrating his nuptials with his longtime partner, Jennifer Goicoechea. During Super Bowl LVIII weekend, the pair snuck away to officially tie the knot. Shortly after, Usher began a hectic promotional run to discuss his latest studio album, Coming Home.

After wrapping up his press tour, it appears the Raymonds jet set off on their official honeymoon. However, fans aren’t happy about the destination the couple chose.

Did Usher Visit Russell Simmons In Bali?

On February 25, Usher shared a video and photo from a tropical location with his wife. Neither upload onto his official Instagram page revealed the exact country. However, according to Russell Simmon’s latest post, it might’ve been his new stomping grounds, Bali, Indonesia.

In a vlog shared on March 3, Simmons revealed that Usher visited him in his new residence. Simmons went on to pen a sentimental message about the encounter. “When I was at the lowest point in my life, I woke up, and this man was sitting by my bed,” he wrote. “I had known Usher since he was a kid, but we really bonded because of our mutual love for self-discovery and our belief in Yogic science as a direct route to realizing God’s consciousness in ourselves.”

He closed the post by thanking Usher for his ongoing support. “People remember to remember this: a friend walks in when others walk out,” he wrote. “I will never forget the generosity of spirit I witnessed in this man. God bless you, baby bro Usher. [I] love you!”

Fans of Usher slammed the recording artist for being spotted with Simmons, given the sexual assault allegation the former mogul is facing. View their remarks below.

Usher hasn’t issued a response to the blowback for users online.

Usher Releases Brand New Album “Coming Home” Ahead Of Super Bowl Halftime Performance

Usher is gearing up for a big weekend. He’s preparing to take center stage at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas for the Super Bowl LVIII halftime show. However, he not only is getting ready to grace the audience with a spectacular performance but also unveils his latest musical masterpiece, Coming Home. This marks Usher’s ninth studio album and a significant milestone in his illustrious career, as it is his first release since 2016’s Hard II Love.

The timing of Coming Home couldn’t be more timely for Usher, aligning with a full-circle moment in his journey. Having concluded two residencies with a total of 100 shows in Las Vegas in late 2023, Usher’s Super Bowl halftime show in Sin City feels like a triumphant homecoming. This moment is further amplified by the fact that Usher is celebrating an impressive 30 years in the music industry this year, adding an extra layer of significance to this phase in his career. Throughout his three-decade-long career since his self-titled debut album, Usher has consistently demonstrated his talents. Ranging from soulful R&B to infectious club anthems and chart-topping pop hits.

Furthermore, Coming Home stands as a testament to his versatility as an artist today. Showcasing a blend of contemporary sounds and collaborative efforts with newer artists such as Summer Walker, Latto, and BTS’ Jung Kook. For example, “Good Good,” which features Summer Walker and 21 Savage is a post-breakup anthem. This song was released as a single prior to the album dropping. However, the album serves as the perfect backdrop for Usher’s just-announced Past Present Future Tour, set to take him on a journey across North America later this year. With a huge catalogue of music spanning his entire career, the tour promises to be a celebration of Usher’s evolution as an artist.

Coming Home not only marks a musical odyssey for Usher but also encapsulates the essence of his enduring artistry. As the album resonates with themes of love and romance, Usher invites listeners to join him on a nostalgic yet forward-looking exploration of his musical legacy, making Coming Home a pivotal chapter in his illustrious career. On September 24, 2023 (better known in some circles as the date of the Taylor Swift-Travis Kelce hard launch), Usher was revealed as the Apple Music Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show performer. He simultaneously announced his next album, Coming Home, and sat down with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe to unpack the album’s message. It was initially due out during Super Bowl LVIII at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas (Usher’s home away from home) on Sunday, February 11, but Usher must have realized competing for eyeballs with the Super Bowl was unwise, so he changed the release date to Friday, February 9.

Usher Speaks on State of R&B: ‘Whoever said R&B is Dead Sounds Crazy’

DSC09297Usher

Usher isn’t here for all that R&B is dead talk. In an interview with Billboard, Usher flexes on those who attempted to bury the genre, highlighting the new class of artists.

“I’m very happy that there’s a new installation of R&B artists who care to be authentic to what they are creating, inspired by artists of the past,” Usher said. “Everybody who has ever said to me that R&B is dead sounds crazy. Especially when I know the origins of R&B are in all other genres of music. It’s about creating commerce in other spaces.”

Later he added, “I never felt like R&B was dying. I think it just needs expansion. We’re moving toward a standard where people are looking at snippets — TikTok, Instagram and other things — and when fans get it, they take it and do something with it. But if we start to think of it that way and create from that place, the standards for R&B will change.”

Multi-platinum artist Usher is hitting the road to celebrate his illustrious 30-year career and the release of his upcoming album Coming Home. Following the success of his Las Vegas residency, the global icon will embark on the Usher: Past Present Future tour, produced by Live Nation.
