Carmelo Anthony Calls The Nuggets “Petty” For Giving Nikola Jokic His Number

Carmelo Anthony has sounded off against his former team, the Denver Nuggets, about their decision to give Nikola Jokic his old number. “When you think of 15 in Denver now, to this generation, you thinking Joker. I’m like, ‘F-ck is going on? 15?’” Melo told the 7am in Brooklyn podcast. Furthermore, Melo called the move “petty”.

Melo spent eight years in Denver to begin his NBA career. However, after a string of playoff misses and one-and-done first-round exits, Melo announced that he would be exploring free agency when his contract expired in 2011. However, rather than let him walk, the Nuggets traded Melo to the Knicks. Before coming to the NBA, Jokic also wore No. 15 in Serbia.

However, during a separate appearance on 7am in Brooklyn, Melo got a chance to share some love for a close friend. As Jadakiss gave Usher his flowers for his recently-ended Vegas residency, he also mentioned that he still fondly remembered his time working with Usher. A moment later, Anthony was dropping a perfect cover of Kiss’ verse from that collaboration, “Throwback”. “He killed it!” Jadakiss exclaimed once Anthony had powered through the verse. However, Melo isn’t the only one with hip-hop connections. While walking through the crowd at Madison Square Garden during an It’s All A Blur tour stop, Drake spotted a familiar face. The Toronto rapper bounded over to embrace and greet Kiyan Anthony, Melo’s son. Furthermore, evidence from social media indicated that the pair had grabbed a picture together after the show.

Kiyan is a four-star recruit in the class of 2025. He is ranked #45 by 247 Sports and #52 by ESPN. He currently has a wealth of collegiate offers, including his father’s alma mater Syracuse. The 2023 ESPYS Presented by Capital One took place on Wednesday at The Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, honoring the most remarkable moments in sports. Lil Wayne kicked off the show with a captivating performance of “A Milli,” while H.E.R. also graced the stage. The star-studded event featured appearances by sports icons such as Chris Paul, Dwyane Wade, Mikaela Shiffrin, Patrick Mahomes, and entertainers including Tiffany Haddish and Travis Kelce.

The ESPYS recognized individuals and groups who exhibited exceptional strength and bravery in the face of adversity. The Pat Tillman Award for Service was presented to the Buffalo Bills training staff, lauding their heroic efforts to save the life of player Damar Hamlin. The Arthur Ashe Award for Courage was bestowed upon the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team for their relentless fight for equal pay. Liam Hendriks, pitcher for the Chicago White Sox, received the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance after triumphing over non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.

The V Foundation announced a new collaboration with the American Cancer Society’s Hockey Fights Cancer initiative, amplifying funding for cancer research and sharing inspiring stories within the hockey community. H.E.R. commemorated the 30th anniversary of the V Foundation and Jimmy Valvano’s legendary ESPYS speech with a soulful rendition of “The Journey.”

Jrue and Lauren Holiday were honored with The Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award for their impactful work in underserved communities. LeBron James received Best Record Breaking Performance for surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s NBA career scoring record and reassured fans that retirement was not imminent. The evening also featured a heartfelt tribute to Carmelo Anthony, presented by his former teammates and close friends, Dwyane Wade and Chris Paul.

NBA Draft 2003: Fans Look Back On Loaded Class 20 Years Later

The 2023 NBA Draft just wrapped last week. Fans witnessed Victor Wembanyama hear his name called with the first overall pick. Wembanyama has already been advertised as the next big thing to step on the hardwood this coming season. However, many believe that this class was very top-heavy and filled with talent. But those statements have been said about many draft classes that have come before them. Although one class may stand the test of time.

Monday marks the 20th anniversary of the 2003 NBA Draft. A draft that is now remembered and revered as one of the greatest in NBA history. Of course, the number one overall pick that year was LeBron James. James has gone on to have a stellar career. At least, I think many would agree with that. Also names like Carmelo Anthony, Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh, and David West were also called that night. Throughout the day, fans have been reminiscing on such a stacked draft.

LeBron James Leads 2003 NBA Draft Class

Yes, this anniversary probably doesn’t sit well with Detroit Pistons fans. The franchise selected Darko Milicic with the second overall pick. Milicic’s career never panned out. Leaving fans to daydream over Anthony, Wade, and Bosh potentially playing for Detroit. However, nobody should expect every pick to turn into a Hall of Fame caliber player. But don’t tell that to a Pistons fan. The wound has to be still fresh from such a massive draft night miss.

Since 2003, many have wondered when the next superclass could make its way to the NBA. One has to wonder that if Wembanyama becomes the star he’s destined to be, could the rest of the 2023 class follow his lead? It would be poetic to see a draft class 20 years later become the next great generation of the NBA. However, someone has to take the mantle. Carmelo Anthony Has No Regret About Retiring Without A Ring

Carmelo Anthony officially retired from the NBA on May 22, ending a 19-year career as one of the deadliest shooters to ever play in the league. There were many accolades that came alongside Anthony’s career – 10 all-star appearances, and six All-NBA team nominations. However, the one thing that Anthony ends his career without is an NBA ring.

Despite Anthony’s talent, the various teams in his career were never quite in title contention. The closest Melo came was in the 2008-09 season, when the Denver Nuggets reached the Western Conference Finals. However, the Nuggets fell to the eventual champion Lakers in six games.

No Rings, No Regrets for Melo

However, Melo has no regrets about retiring without a ring. “I’m at peace,” Melo said to Sports Illustrated, “That doesn’t bother me no more; that idea that you’re a loser if you don’t win a championship. For me, I’ve won. I won back in 2003, the night I shook David Stern’s hand on that [draft] stage,” Anthony said. “I made it out of Red Hook. I’ve won at life. The ring is the only thing I didn’t get. It would’ve been a great accomplishment, but I don’t regret it, because I feel like I did everything I could to get it.”

Now, Anthony turns his attention to his son. Sixteen-year-old Kiyan Anthony currently has 11 collegiate offers, including from Melo’s alma mater Syracuse as well as the likes of Tennessee, Memphis, UMass, and Illinois. However, Melo also revealed that his one season with the Lakers, his last season in the NBA, was because of Kiyan. Despite vowing to retire when Kiyan started high school, his son pushed him for one last season. “Then [as he started high school] the Lakers called, and he told me, ‘Dad, I’ll be O.K., you should go.’ Even with LeBron there, I wouldn’t have done it without Kiyan pushing me. So to be able to spend time with him in the gym, on his work ethic? With school? I can be a father to him every day. It’s perfect timing.”

Carmelo Anthony formally announced his retirement from the NBA after beginning his career as the No. 3 overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft for the Denver Nuggets — the same draft that saw LeBron James go No. 1.

Melo’s impact was celebrated throughout the music world upon his announcement. Melo’s comments section was predictably full of love from the likes of Juicy J (“Congrats mane!”), Lloyd Banks (“Thanks for everything you’ve done for basketball,” and Rapsody (five rose emojis).

“We’ll done [sic] brother we’ll done [sic] @carmeloanthony Congratulations you deserve all the glory,” Fat Joe wrote to caption an Instagram photo of Anthony during his New York Knicks years.

Nas narrated and reposted an Instagram reel made alongside Jumpman — Fabolous reposted the same reel to his Instagram Story alongside, “Congrats on a hell of a career” — and Metro Boomin simply posted a throwback photo of Nuggets-era Melo posting up the late Kobe Bryant:

King James might be joining Anthony in retirement sooner than previously assumed after the Los Angeles Lakers were swept out of the 2023 NBA Playoffs by the Nuggets last night, May 22. But for now, it’s about Melo, who ironically last appeared on an NBA court as a Laker during the 2021-22 season.

“I remember the days when I had nothin’ — just a ball on the court and a dream of something more — but basketball was my outlet,” the 10-time All-Star and future Hall Of Famer said in a video posted to Instagram on May 22. “My purpose was strong, my communities, the cities I represented the pride, and the fans that supported me along the way. I am forever grateful for those people and places because they made me Carmelo Anthony.”

He continued, “But now the time has come for me to say goodbye. To the court where I made my name, to the game that gave me purpose and pride. With this bittersweet goodbye to the NBA, I’m excited about what the future holds for me.”

Anthony also explained that he believes his legacy is “more than basketball” and will live on through his son. The video was soundtracked by “All That I Got Is You” by Ghostface Killah featuring Mary J. Blige.

Carmelo Anthony announced his retirement from the NBA on May 22. While the 38-year-old had not played since the 2021-22 season, the news still came as something of a shock to many. In his prime, Anthony was one of the best shooters in the NBA. Furthermore, he finishes his career as the 9th all-time scorer in the league.

However, the final years of his career were defined by bouncing from team to team. He played what would become his last season with the Lakers in 2021-22.

In the wake of the announcement, many big-name stars in the sports world and beyond have shared their thoughts on Melo. First, there was Nas, who narrated an Air Jordans video about Melo’s career. “He didn’t do it for the accolades or the Hall of Fame votes,” Nas said over footage of Melo’s many jerseys. “Boy did it for the kids from Red Hook, the crew from the block, Murphy Homes projects, San Juan, those with hoops dreams, dreams of hope and beyond. So when they look up, they see the sky for what it is: just another place for them to fly.”

Carmelo Anthony is calling it a career. In a video uploaded to social media, Melo announced his retirement from the NBA.

Anthony made 10 NBA All-Star teams and a six-time All-NBA selection for his career. Melo retires after 19 seasons in the NBA, drafted at No. 3 in 2003, and is the No. 9 scorer in league history.

Carmelo Anthony is a player that NBA fans have always loved. Overall, he was known as a guy who could score like no one else. Although he never won an NBA title, he had a lot of success at the Olympics. Moreover, he always had praise from his peers, who knew just how good his game was. He will certainly be headed to the Basketball Hall of Fame, where he will take his place among the best to ever play the game. When it comes to the game’s best scorers, Carmelo certainly has to be near the top of your list.

That said, Melo struggled to find playing time in his last few years in the league. Although he found his stride with the Portland Trail Blazers, he ended up with the Los Angeles Lakers for a season. After last year’s failures, Carmelo Anthony was unable to find an NBA team. There weren’t many spots for him around the league, and in the end, he was never able to get another chance.
