Boot Camp Clik Issues Statement About Vicious Assault On Crew Co-Founder Buckshot Shorty

Last week, several reports confirmed that Boot Camp Clik co-founder Buckshot Shorty was the victim of a vicious attack in his home borough of Brooklyn, resulting in the “Who Got The Props” rapper being hospitalized with serious injuries.

Today, the Boot Camp Clik put out a collective statement via social media with an update on Buck’s condition as well as a notice to have all videos of the unprovoked assault to be taken down.

There are still no suspects nor a motive for this attack. The assault occurred in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, where Buckshot, whose real name is Kenyatta Blake, is known to reside.

Buckshot Shorty’s acclaim comes with over three decades of history in Hip Hop since the launch of Black Moon’s 1993 debut album Enta Da Stage. This album spawned the career of several legendary notables in the culture including Smif N’ Wessun and Heltah Skeltah, one of whose members is the late Sean Price.

Brooklyn Rapper Buckshot Has Been Released From The Hospital After A Recent Assault

Rap pioneer Buckshot, best known as a member of Black Moon and Boot Camp Clik, has been released from the hospital and is recovering after recently being attacked in his native Flatbush, Brooklyn, according to a statement released by his label, Duck Down Music, on Twitter this afternoon. In a video that went viral on social media over the weekend, the 49-year-old rapper was seen in the aftermath of an attack by multiple assailants who left him reeling and bloodied.

Buckshot responded to fans’ concern in a statement to AllHipHop.

To all my friends, fans, and supporters—thank you for reaching out during this difficult time. Recently, I was the victim of a violent assault involving multiple individuals armed with weapons, including handguns. This attack stems from ongoing disputes over my property, where I am the rightful owner but have faced issues with unauthorized occupants who escalated the situation to violence.

As someone who’s been an entertainer and part of this community for over 30 years, I am deeply disturbed that such an incident could happen in New York—a city I love and call home. Violence like this has no place here, and I’m calling on everyone to come together to make New York safer and better for all of us.

I am currently recovering from my injuries and am working closely with my legal team and law enforcement to ensure this matter is handled properly. We are committed to seeing justice served, and I ask for your patience and support as the legal process unfolds. Again, thank you for all the well wishes. Let’s put an end to violence and help rebuild a stronger, safer New York.

Buckshot first debuted in 1992 as a member of the underground rap group Black Moon. Their debut album Enta Da Stage is considered a classic of the East Coast backpacker scene, with its single “Who Got da Props” peaking at No. 86 on the Hot 100. The group’s most recent release was 2019’s Rise Of Da Moon. Buckshot achieved much of his solo success through a run of collaborative albums, including Chemistry and The Solution with famed North Carolina beatmaker 9th Wonder, in the 2000s and 2010s.

On this day in 1972, the late legend Sean Price of the Boot Camp Clik was born.  His first appearance was on Smif-N-Wessun’s 1995 album Dah Shinnin’, and his next major appearance was in 1996 as part of the duo Heltah Skeltah, who released the album Nocturnal on Duck Down Records. They would release two more albums as a duo, Magnum Force in 1998 and D.I.R.T. in 2008.

During the 2000s, Price made a name for himself as a heavyweight in the underground Hip Hop community. His first solo album, Monkey Barz, was released in 2005 and received critical acclaim, peaking at #70 on the Billboard Hip Hop chart. To this day, the album is held in ridiculously high esteem among commercial and independent artists, and after that, he went on to release two more albums, Jesus Price Supastar and Mic Tyson, both of which made debuts on the Billboard 200 chart (Jesus Price Supastar hitting #196 and Mic Tyson hitting #59).

Sean Price passed away in his sleep on August 8, 2015, and the details surrounding the death are still unknown. Within four days of his passing, his fans were able to help raise $72,883 to help his family with funeral costs. Two years later, the posthumous Imperius Rex was released, with some of Price’s songs classed among some of BCC’s greatest hits.

On today’s date in 2007, Sean Price of the legendary Boot Camp Clik released his second solo album entitled Jesus Price Supastar on Duck Down Records.

Jesus Price Supastar features production from 9th Wonder and Khrysis, as well as Illmind, Tommy Tee, Moss, and P.F. Cuttin. Album guests include Boot Camp Clik members Buckshot, Steele and Rock, Rustee Juxx, Sadat X, Block McCloud, Phonte, Chaundon, and The Loudmouf Choir. The album was met with a positive reception from music critics.

Jesus Price Supastar debuted on the Billboard Hot 200 chart at #196, making it the first Boot Camp Clik album since 1999 to crack the chart.

This album was a superb follow up to Monkey Barz, Price’s solo debut, but not even the BCC expected Sean’s solo ventures to be received so well by an entirely different generation of Hip Hoppers than he was used to that celebrated his Helton Skeltah success.

After four successful solo albums, Price’s life was cut short in August 2015 by what has still been ruled undetermined.

The Hip Hop community will never forget the feeling that permeated the atmosphere the morning that everyone woke up to find out that Sean Price aka Hussain Sayyid aka Ruck of the famed Boot Camp Clik duo Heltah Skeltah passed away in his sleep on this date eight years ago. He was 43 years old.

His death sent shock waves throughout Hip Hop, especially in NYC and Brooklyn to be specific. The native Brownsvillian was loved and respected in his community, whether it was for his penchant for spitting fire verses, his Comedy Central-esque shenanigans or just being one of the few examples of a responsible family man in the hood.

P left behind a myriad of solo studio work, including Mic Tyson and the critically acclaimed, yet posthumous release, Songs In The Key Of Price, in which his scheduled album release party at NYC’s SOBs ironically was turned into a memorial show.

Rest In Peace to Sean P. and condolences to his wife Bernadette and their children from the entire Mind Squad. Supreme salute to the entire Boot Camp Clik for holding down their comrade and his legacy.

Today In Hip Hop History: Smif N Wessun Dropped Their Debut Album ‘Dah Shinin’ 28 Years Ago

On this date in 1995, Steele and Tek aka Smif N Wessun of the legendary Boot Camp Clik released their debut album Dah Shinin’ on the ultra-indie imprint, Wreck Records.

This was also the sophomore effort of the Boot Camp Clik, which exposed the skills of more of the artists that were heard on Black Moon’s debut project, Enta Da Stage. Tracks such as “Cession at da Doghillee” and “Sound Bwoy Bureill” introduced members of Heltah Skeltah, the duo that included the late Sean Price, as well as the Originoo Gunn Clappaz(O.G.C.), which completed the epic Brooklyn rap collective.

With in-house production courtesy of Da Beatminerz, the Roy Ayers’ Ubiquity-Esque feel that was captured on the album’s cover can definitely be felt through the verses over the haunting tracks. Even though the album never reached gold status in terms of sales, Dah Shinin’ is undoubtedly one of the albums that define its era.
