Coi Leray Had “No Clue” About Latto’s “Blick Blick” Bars

A massive song leak that caused Latto to trend across social media has received an official response from Coi Leray. In November, Latto was yet another artist who suffered a setback after a reported 130 songs leaked online. Nestled within was a reference track where Latto spit bars over Coi Leray and Nicki Minaj’s collaboration, “Blick Blick.”

Quickly, fans speculated on whether Latto was responsible for penning bars on the released version. In a new interview with Billboard, Leray addressed the controversy. “I had no clue that she cut that record,” she said.

After the songs leaked, Leray said that creating songs was a team effort. She emphasized the point with Billboard.

“I kinda look at it like a collab. It’s like if Gucci or Moncler wanted me on the cover wearing their stuff, and I like the stuff, then if I don’t like it, I don’t have to wear it. It’s the same thing with that song,” Coi added.

“If you play me a song and I think I could kill that s–t. I’ma businesswoman — not only am I talented, I’m also about my business. If that s–t’s a smash and I’m like, ‘All right cool, let’s do it,’ I have the option to change whatever I want in the song. I have the options to tweak or do whatever.”

Further, “Once you give me the song, you can’t tell me what to do. You could give me advice and I’ma cut it.”

The “No More Parties” rapper also addressed why the reference track had similar lyrics to the finalized version.

“Even when we did ‘Blick Blick,’ the hook was already cut and we did the verse together. That’s why the verses sound different,” said Leray. “I heard Latto’s version and the verses sound different but the hook was there.”

“A lot of great music hooks are written and I don’t know — it’s a formula. I’ve only been in the industry for four years, and now I’m at point where I feel like I’m breaking superstar status and I’m learning that formula. I’m gonna be at a point where I’m making those f–king songs for the biggest of the biggest just off the simple fact I learned the formula.”

Additionally, Leray adknowledged she learned this formula through collaborating with others. However, she made sure to add, “But if you put me in the studio with any one of these b–ches I swear they’re not seeing me in any way. They’re not coming out with no hit.”

“And I say that in the most humblest, friendliest, loving, and friendly competition way.”

Nicki Minaj Had To Explain Some ‘Blick Blick’ Slang To James Corden During ‘Carpool Karaoke’

The long-awaited return of James Corden’s bonafide hit segment, Carpool Karaoke, is finally here — and Nicki Minaj brought the show back with a bang. Finally getting around to returning the favor for Adele’s epic impression of her “Monster” verse from years ago, Nicki did a spot on Adele impression too, and the show even managed to splice them both rapping the verse side by side. This is as full circle as it gets with internet memes, people.

But because it’s Nicki and James, don’t worry, the hilarious moments didn’t stop there. While rapping along to her new collaboration with Coi Leray, “Blick Blick,” Nicki suddenly realized that James had no idea what “opps” meant. “James, if you’re going to hang out with me, you have to at least understand the lingo,” Nicki asserted, when James offered “opportunities?” as a weak guess for the slang phrase around the 5:30 minute mark. She followed up by getting him to name an opposition in his life (his neighbor’s dog ended up being the example), and explaining how they would roll up on Graeme and Brenda to let them know when it’s time to put that dog inside.

It’s a pretty hilarious moment, and a great example of how applying rap lingo to IRL, mundane situations is… never not funny. Watch up top starting around 5:30.

Coi Leray Performs A Colorful Medley Of ‘Trendsetter’ Hits On ‘The Tonight Show’

With Coi Leray’s debut album Trendsetter dropping this Friday, the New Jersey rapper stopped by The Tonight Show to show off a bit of what the album has to offer. Rather than focusing on any individual songs from the album, she chose to go with a medley of some of her hits from the past year that will appear on it, including “No More Parties,” “Twinnem,” and her new single with Nicki Minaj, “Blick Blick.”

Rocking a pair of distressed skinny jeans, a crop top, a trucker hat, and furry boots, Coi performed the songs on an airbrushed stage backed by a graffiti wall and surrounded by denim-clad dancers. She only played a snippet of “No More Parties” — understandable, considering she played the song during her previous appearance on The Tonight Show — then followed up with a chorus from “Twinnem” before going all-in on “Blick Blick.” While Nicki didn’t appear to perform her verse, Coi and her dancers ran through some choreography to allow the moment to shine.

Trendsetter will feature 20 songs, with guest appearances from Nicki, Yung Bleu, Young MA, HER, G Herbo, Lil Durk, Lil Tecca, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, and Pooh Shiesty.

Coi Leray Says She Recorded Her Video For ‘Blick Blick’ With Nicki Minaj While Dealing With A Knee Injury

For her latest move in 2022, Coi Leray called one of rap’s most popular acts to stand beside her for a new song. She and Nicki Minaj joined forces for their “Blick Blick” track and it came complete with a new video. The colorful visual displayed the two rappers armed with some heavy artillery as they laid off rap that fired shots at their competition. The track could line up to be the biggest release of Leray’s career and it’s one she deserves as she’s spent the last few years working her way up to having one of today’s most promising rap careers.

In a tweet that reflected on the release of “Blick Blick,” Leray shared a surprising tidbit about the song’s video. “I did all that Dancing on a fracture knee,” she wrote in the post. “I gotta get a minor surgery on it but I do physical therapy to maintain it for now. I wanted to go 10x harder with the choreo but it looks so good for a fractured patella.”

To celebrate the new single and her first-ever collaboration with Minaj, Leray got a tattoo of a pink Barbie doll head — which is in reference to Minaj’s Barbz fanbase — and the date “3.18.22.” ” I wish that I can have this moment for life,” Leray wrote on Instagram. “This moment is stuck with me 4EVER !”

Coi Leray And Nicki Minaj Are Armed To The Teeth In The Colorful ‘Blick Blick’ Video

Did anyone else mix their G.I. Joes with their siblings’ Barbies as a kid? For the longest time, I thought I was alone in this, but judging from Coi Leray‘s video for her new collaboration with Nicki Minaj, “Blick Blick,” she never saw a problem making the beauty dolls run around with the soldier toys’ guns, either. The colorful video is heavy on Nicki’s well-established Pinkprint aesthetic, but rather than getting pampered, the two rappers get armed to the teeth like Neo and Trinity from The Matrix to take on their foes. Of course, the guns are also on-theme.

“Blick Blick” is the latest sign that Coi’s star is rising after some skeptical fans wrote her off in the wake of her breakout with “No More Parties” toward the end of 2020. Thanks to her goofy, Playboi Carti-esque delivery, some thought she was just a gimmick, especially after her baffling performance during the XXL Freshman Cypher. However, since then, she’s kept up a steady stream of solid singles such as “Twinnem” and “Anxiety,” building her credibility and showcasing her versatility. Securing a feature from Queen Minaj herself — especially after her dad Benzino nearly ruined the chance for her — only solidifies her ascent, proving she has belonged at the top all along, just as she (and Uproxx) predicted.

Coi Leray And Nicki Minaj Fire Off Shots With No Regard On The Taunting ‘Blick Blick’

Coi Leray had a huge 2021 year. She kicked things off with her single “No More Parties” which went Platinum and peaked at No. 25 on the albums chart. She followed that up with “Big Purr (Prrdd)” alongside Pooh Shiesty, another record that entered the Billboard singles chart, this time peaking at No. 69. Additionally, she landed a spot on the 2021 XXL Freshman list alongside names like Blxst, 42 Dugg, Flo Milli, Rubi Rose, and more. The 2021 year came and went without a new album from Leray, but it looks like it could arrive this year. Until then, she’s back with a new single and features a very notable guest act.

Nicki Minaj stands beside Leray for their new song “Blick Blick.” It’s a record that the pair spent most of the last week teasing, and rightfully so. On the track, Leray and Minaj are a taunting duo that flexes their status and fires some shots at the competition, all without fear of being defeated at any point.

While “Blick Blick” arrived without delay, the song was almost released without Minaj’s verse. It came after Leray’s father Benzino leaked the news last month during a Clubhouse conversation. “I just felt bad that she was robbed of telling the world in her own way @ her own time,” Minaj said during a Twitter Q&A with fans. “But that’s water under the bridge now. Good vibes all 2022.” Prior to Minaj’s comments, Benzino apologized for his actions, saying, “I feel horrible and sad. I am 100 percent in the wrong and it will never happen again.”

You can listen to “Blick Blick” in the video above.

Pooh Shiesty is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Nicki Minaj Almost Removed Her Verse From Her Upcoming Coi Leray Collab, ‘Blick Blick’

Nicki Minaj and Coi Leray‘s upcoming collaboration “Blick Blick” is already one of the most anticipated singles of the year. But the collab, due later this week, almost didn’t happen.

After Leray’s father Benzino leaked the news of the collab in a Clubhouse last month, Minaj removed her verse. She took to her Instagram story to deny rumors of the collab, noting she’s solely in “Onika mode.” Minaj ultimately changed her mind after speaking with Leray privately.

“I just felt bad that she was robbed of telling the world in her own way @ her own time,” Minaj said in a Twitter Q&A with fans on Monday. “But that’s water under the bridge now. Good vibes all 2022.”

Before Minaj and Leroy revealed the collab was, in fact, real, Benzino apologized to the two rappers via Twitter, saying “I feel horrible and sad. I am 100 percent in the wrong and it will never happen again.”

Ahead of the song’s release, Minaj promised to deliver the “verse of the year,” warning the Barbz that they won’t be able to immediately learn it upon first listen. “Breath control. Breathe. Meditate. Diction exercises. Do that for the next 4 days. Then maybe.”

“Blick Blick” is out 3/18 via Republic. Pre-save it here.
