Eric Eiswert, the principal at Pikesville High School in Maryland, is currently under investigation by the Baltimore school district for racist and antisemitic statements attributed to him in a private chat. The allegations stem from a secret recording that recently surfaced, leading to widespread concern and calls for accountability.
The recording, posted on Instagram on January 17, features a male voice making disparaging remarks about Black students and teachers. In the recording, the voice expresses frustration, stating, “I seriously don’t understand why I have to put up with these dumbasses here every day… Between these ungrateful Black kids who can’t test their way out of a paper bag or these teachers who don’t get it. How hard is it to get these students to meet their grade-level expectations?”
Not only did the voice target Black students and teachers, but it also made derogatory comments about the Jewish community in Pikesville, which has a sizable Jewish population. The recording quickly went viral, sparking outrage and demands for swift action.
Billy Burke, executive director of the union representing Baltimore County administrators, addressed the allegations, claiming that the recording was created using artificial intelligence (AI). Burke stated that Eiswert “denounces [the racist comments], and he did not make those statements.” The use of AI in creating such recordings raises questions about the potential manipulation of audio to falsely implicate individuals.
BCPS Superintendent Myriam Rogers is actively working to verify the authenticity of the recording. In response to the controversy, Rogers emphasized the school district’s commitment to maintaining a respectful and inclusive environment, stating, “We will not tolerate disparaging remarks about any member of the Team BCPS community.”
The investigation into Eric Eiswert’s alleged comments highlights the challenges schools face in addressing issues of racism and discrimination within their leadership.
