The Weeknd’s “Dawn FM”: Breaking Down The Features

If any man has mastered the art of the rollout in the modern music landscape, it’s none other than The Weeknd. At a time where fans’ attention spans are more tenuous than ever and near-impossible to maintain, the otherworldly aura of Abel Tesfaye’s output and the consistency with which he’s delivered spellbinding work has meant that, whenever rumblings of new music begin, the world collectively sits up and takes notice.

From Beauty Behind The Madness onwards, each release from Abel has not just been billed as an album, but a momentous event in music. And after cutting his teeth in the underground with his landmark Trilogy, The Weeknd isn’t shy about using every lavish promotional tool at his disposal to grind the industry to a halt. And in the case of Dawn FM, this is something that he’s done with aplomb.

After proclaiming that “the dawn is coming” in May of last year, speculation immediately began to run roughshod as to whether a new release from the alternative R&B superstar was imminent.

“I’m guilty of wanting to outdo my last album,” the artist later said in a GQ interview in August of 2021. “But it’s never like, ‘I’ve got to do the same type of song.’ I’m so happy I’m not like that. My palette is so wide.”

And with that, the world was in hysterics.

But rather than just envisioning what his first project since the expansive, 80’s synth-pop infused world of After Hours

would sound like, the October 5th edition of his Memento Mori radio show added a new dynamic to proceedings when Abel revealed that album number 5 would be more feature-heavy than previous efforts. Rather than refer to them as guests, he emphasized that they are “characters,” and much like his last album was driven by a central plot that the music provided an original score for, he claimed that their roles would be central to the narrative that drives what we now know to be Dawn FM.

First unveiled in what was an extravagant, cinematically scaled trailer, The Weeknd has revealed that there will be five “characters” who will leave their imprint on his new project. Just days away from its release on January 7th, we’re going to take an in-depth look at the relationship between Abel and each of his collaborators in order to determine what might be in store for us in this bold, new sonic universe of his.

Tyler, The Creator

In a lot of ways, it’s felt like The Weeknd and Tyler, The Creator have been ships in the night for years. Having both exploded onto the scene in 2011 with House Of Balloons and Goblin respectively, both mens’ statuses as visionaries made an eventual team-up seem inevitable. However, in the earlier days of their career, that reputation as geniuses in the making came with an insularity that made collabs from either few and far between.

Despite this, they have expressed mutual admiration during interviews and in a 2015 edition of Puss Puss magazine, Tyler remarked thatI really like The Weeknd’s song, “Tell Your Friends.” That song is so fucking great, I really like it.”

Later down the line, Tyler could be seen rendering Abel’s 2016 smash “Starboy” in his own, sardonic style.

Although it was apparent that the former leader of Odd Future was a fan of The Weeknd, Tesfaye had remained largely silent on his feelings about Tyler until very recently. In his 2021 GQ cover story, he revealed that not only did he marvel at Tyler’s creative evolution, but the two had what seemed like a typically bizarre encounter.

“I got mad love for Tyler, the Creator, and what he’s doing right now,” he relayed. “Tyler is funny, man. I remember he came to one of my performances—I think it was like a festival performance. And he was very vocal about how “Starboy” was his favorite song at the time. You can tell he’s waiting for the song. I could see him. As soon as the song happened, he’s like, “All right, cool. Thanks.” And he just peaced out. It was pretty funny. But he’s somebody that I really admire, because he wears his feelings on his sleeve.”

Strongly rumored to appear together on the track “Here We Go Again”,  it’ll be intriguing to see whether Tyler’s contributions will come solely in a vocal capacity or if his trademark brand of production will have made it into Abel’s catalogue at last.

Lil Wayne

At face value, Lil Wayne and The Weeknd may seem like an odd combination but the past has proven that it works. Back in 2017, the two previously encountered one another on the plaintive “I’m Good” from Dedication 5 in which the Canadian vocalist provided an extended intro to the project that explored the familiar terrain of the perils and perks of fame.

Highly regarded as one of the most versatile and distinctive voices in hip-hop, Tunechi will likely be bringing a more surreal texture to The Weeknd’s new project than the straight-ahead proclamation Abel provided on his. Either way, the two linking up on a major project– seemingly on the track “I Heard You Were Married”– is sure to have both sets of fans in a frenzy. Plus, when you consider that both men were vocal about their anger over being unceremoniously snubbed by The Grammy’s last year, what better way is there to send a middle finger to the recording academy than to turn in a blistering track that won’t even be submitted for their consideration?

Quincy Jones

Inarguably one of the finest record producers and composers that the United States has ever produced, it’s hard to imagine that any true scholar of music wouldn’t leap at the chance to have Quincy Jones provide his deft touch to their records.

In Abel’s case, the Canadian superstar holding a candle for Jones is no surprise when you consider that he was so instrumental in the career of Michael Jackson, whose influence on The Weeknd is evident. The Weeknd has also revealed that Jones’ mindset acted as a guide for how to broach the turbulent world of fame and celebrity.

Speaking when he was awarded The Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award, Abel declared that, “I actually first met Quincy Jones in Vegas a long time ago. He pulled up to one of my club shows and when I got off stage, he was waiting on the side and I was so excited to meet him. There were fans on the other side of the stage screaming and trying to get my attention but I was so focused on him, Quincy Jones, the reason why I do this.

He told me to go to the fans, go take pictures and sign autographs, I’ll still be here waiting, they’re more important. And that stuck with me till this day,” he continued, “he was teaching me a lesson in that moment that nothing is more important than the people and giving back is always better than receiving.”

With the ceremony held this past September, it’s likely that the event gave the pair the chance to hatch plans to collaborate. Now, we will see the crossover between one of modern music’s most imaginative minds and one of its most enduring talents in just a few days’ time on “A Tale By Quincy.”

Oneohtrix Point Never

While their levels of celebrity and mainstream applicability may be at two different ends at the spectrum, all reports suggest that in the past few years, Abel Tesfaye and Daniel Lopatin, better known as electronic virtuoso Oneohtrix Point Never, have become kindred spirits.

Brought together by their contributions to the Academy Award nominated Uncut Gemsthe experience of being aligned by the Safdie Brothers’ film seemed to have cosmic implications as the two are now inseparable. Speaking to Variety after the film’s release, Josh Safdie even said that during the club scene in Uncut Gems where Abel performs House Of Balloons-era classic “The Morning”, he was originally intended to perform one of “four or five amazing tracks that he’d recorded with Lopatin.

After The Weeknd reportedly told Lopatin, “I’d heard your music before, but now I understand,” Abel helmed executive producer duties on his 2020 project Oneohtrix Point Never Magic, with the vocalist even taking centre stage on the stunningly ambient track “No Nightmares.”

In an interview with GQ, OHN spoke about the role that the positive yet uncompromising influence of Tesfaye had on the project. “It was obvious that he’s someone I can really rely on when it comes to honest feedback. I love his perspective because it’s so wildly different from how he’s in the world musically, and that means a lot to me.”

A bonafide musical bromance, in February of 2021,Daniel played a pivotal role in the arrangement and execution of The Weeknd’s “Superbowl” halftime show. Afterwards, the two were pictured celebrating their triumph together.

At the moment, the extent of Lopatin’s role is not known, but when you consider that he has three production credits on After Hours and was never billed as a feature, it’d suggest that his role in crafting luscious soundscapes must be a more overarching one this time around.

Jim Carrey

If any of the guest appearances on Dawn FM seemed practically predestined to raise eyebrows, it’s this one. Although he’s played an integral role in no shortage of films, documentaries, television series and even loaned his voice to a video game in 2006, acclaimed comedian and actor Jim Carrey has never crossed over into the realm of music. Now, he’s slated to debut in the medium on The Weeknd’s new project and while this may seem far-fetched, Abel revealed that the two have become close friends in the past few years.

“I texted him the address of my condo in L.A., and he said, ‘I can literally see your place from my balcony,’ and we got out telescopes and were waving to each other,” he told Variety in April 2020. “And when I told him about my mom taking me to see The Mask, he knew the theater! On his balcony he had these giant red balloons, and he picked me up and we went to breakfast. It was surreal. Jim Carrey was my first inspiration to be any kind of performer, and I went to breakfast with him on my first day of being 30.”

Heard in both of the project’s trailers to date, it’s expected that his unmistakable voice will either bookend the project or be heard throughout in a series of interludes. In fact, the last track on the project is even titled “Phantom Regret by Jim.”

As for Jim’s review of the project, it’s safe to say that he’s enthused about it.

“I listened to Dawn FM with my good friend Abel @theweeknd last night,” Carrey tweeted after the trailer dropped. “It was deep and elegant and it danced me around the room. I’m thrilled to play a part in his symphony.”

Mamba Sports Academy Now Suing Helicopter Company For Funeral Costs

The aftermath of a helicopter crash that killed Kobe Bryant and eight others is still causing trouble for the company that owned the doomed chopper. The gym formerly known as Mamba Sports Academy and now named Sports Academy is suing Island Express Helicopter Inc. for over $100K in funeral fees.

At the time of her death, Christina Mauser was employed by the academy as one of the girl’s basketball coaches. The gym paid “death benefits and burial expenses” to the family that exceeded more than $127K. Now the gym is suing Island Express for the hefty bill.

Maxx Wolfson/Getty Images

In reports obtained by TMZ, the plaintiffs argue that Island Express should cover the bill, claiming the crash and resulting death of Mauser were due to the helicopter company’s negligence. The plaintiffs are now asking for a reimbursement and coverage of any potential workers’ comp payments that may arise.

Back in January 2020, Mauser and eight others – including Kobe and Gigi Bryant, were killed when their helicopter struck the side of a mountain. At the time of the crash, it was unclear who was at fault for the tragic incident. After a lengthy investigation, NTSB concluded the crash happened for various reasons but noted Island Express Helicopter Inc.’s negligent review of its safety processes.

Since the crash, Christina’s Tijuana Dogs’ husband, Matt Mauser has gone on to share their heart-wrenching love story and the ultimate loss their family has experienced since she’s been gone. Christina Mauser was 38 at the time of her death.

Ukrainian Rapper Was Alive When His Wife Began To Dismember His Body: Report

A Ukrainian rapper living in Russia is dead at 30-years-old in what’s being described in national media as a “perfect murder.” According to The Sun, law enforcement is accusing rapper Andy Cartwright’s 37-year-old wife, Marina Kokhal, of murdering and dismembering Cartwright’s body before feeding the remains to rats.

Larry W. Smith/Getty Images

Kokhal admitted to dismembering her husband, though she insisted that she didn’t murder him. She said that he died from an overdose, explaining that she chopped up his body so his fans wouldn’t know that he died of an “inglorious death.” She told prosecutors that she intended to file a missing person report.

Cartwright’s death came after Kokhal discovered that he was having an affair with a fan but police stated they haven’t found any evidence suggesting that she was responsible for his death. However, the latest reports from forensic investigations state that Cartwright may have been alive at the time he was dismembered, contrary to Kokhal’s claims, and died from oxygen starvation. The report states that Cartwright’s body was dismembered “shortly – a few minutes, dozens of minutes – before death.” Sources said Cartwright was in a “pronounced hypoxia” at the time of his death.

Police said that Cartwright’s dismembered body parts were scattered nearby. It’s reported that some were found in the fridge, bin liners outside, while Cartwright’s fingertips were allegedly fed to rats in the yard. Forensic experts said that eight key body parts weren’t made available to them, including his stomach and intestines. The eight body parts were reported either missing or were put in a washing machine. Police also said that there wasn’t a “drop of blood” found in the remaining body parts that were discovered.

Kokhal remains under investigation as officials continue the investigation.

Klay Thompson’s Role In Warriors Return Revealed By Steve Kerr

This Sunday, Klay Thompson is expected to return to the Golden State Warriors after being away from the lineup for two years. The shooting guard has had numerous injuries including tears to his Achilles, as well as his ACL. Having said that, Klay is eager to get back on the court, especially since the Warriors are one of the best teams in the entire NBA right now. They could really use Thompson’s energy, and the fans are ecstatic to see him back in a Dubs jersey.

Heading into this Sunday’s game against the Cavaliers, there are questions surrounding what Thompson’s role will be. Of course, he hasn’t played in a long time, which means they can’t just make him play 35 minutes right out of the gate.

While speaking to Warriors head coach Steve Kerr today, reporter Anthony Slater asked about Thompson’s role and what fans can expect. As Kerr explained, Thompson will only get 15 to 20 minutes in his first game back, and when it comes to back-to-back games, Thompson will likely be given time to rest. Simply put, the Warriors are making sure Thompson’s return is a sustainable one.

It has yet to be confirmed whether or not Thompson will play this Sunday, however, the team is very optimistic about this possibility. The Splash Brother is a joy to watch, and it will be surreal to see him checking into a game for the first time since 2019.

Steve Nash Explains Kyrie Irving’s Role Ahead Of Season Debut

Brooklyn Nets fans are extremely excited as tonight marks the long-awaited return of Kyrie Irving to the lineup. Due to his vaccination status, Kyrie will only be able to play away games throughout the second half of the season, however, the Nets are perfectly fine with this predicament. They understand that COVID has ravaged their roster and they would rather have as many bodies available as possible, just in case anything dramatic happens.

With Irving playing his first game of the season against the Indiana Pacers, many are curious as to what Irving’s role will be tonight. There have been questions as to whether or not he will get to start tonight’s game, and there are others who aren’t so sure he’ll actually get a lot of minutes.

According to reporter Alex Schiffer, Nets head coach Steve Nash addressed the media today where he spoke about Kyrie’s status. For now, the team is unsure whether or not he’ll start, however, they can safely say that he won’t come close to 38 minutes. At this juncture, the team is confident in giving him significant minutes down the stretch, but they are still easing him back into the game.

Regardless of what Kyrie’s role will be, his inclusion in the lineup will certainly stir up headlines and debate. The point guard is a controversial figure, and the expectations will be high even if he hasn’t played since the playoffs of last year.

Kevin Durant Reacts To Kyrie Irving’s Return To The Nets

Kyrie Irving is making his return to the Brooklyn Nets lineup tonight as they take on the Indiana Pacers. Of course, Irving has missed the entire first half of the season due to his position on the COVID-19 vaccine. Now, however, the Nets are allowing him to play away games, and fans are excited to finally see him on the court doing what he does best.

This is an exciting time for his teammates, especially Kevin Durant, who will now get to play alongside a highly skilled point guard. During an episode of his podcast called “The ETCs,” Durant spoke about the team’s decision to bring Kyrie back and why they did it in the end. As you will come to find out, the team felt like it was a necessary move given the uptick in COVID cases.

Kyrie Irving & Kevin Durant

“With us getting ravaged by COVID, and us down so many bodies, it felt like the perfect time to add a fresh body back into the equation,” Durant said. “Adding Kyrie to the equation just makes us so much better as a team. He was down, we were down, it was pretty simple, to be honest.”

It remains to be seen whether or Kyrie will be his old self tonight, especially given the fact that he has been off for so long. Either way, the Nets will have him back for away games, which is certainly enough reason to celebrate.

Joey Bada$$ Confirms New Album Dropping In 2022

It’s been roughly five years since Joey Bada$$ unveiled his sophomore album, ALL AMERIKKKAN BADA$$ but he has seemingly withdrawn himself from hip-hop’s limelight. He’s expanded his artistic ventures to include television and fashion while his songwriting contributions have helped mark milestones on the Billboard charts. Needless to say, he’s been working without being fixated on rushing a new project out the door.

Arturo Holmes/Getty Images

Thankfully, it appears that Joey Bada$$ is readying a brand new album for 2022. Joey was on Instagram Live this week when he responded to a few fan questions including updates on his forthcoming project. He said that it’ll be dropping this year, though he didn’t provide any other information. “When the album droppin’? The album dropping this year, fasho. Fasho, fasho,” he said. “I ain’t gonna say exactly when, you know because there’s certain rappers who be on my heels but I’mma just — it’s comin’, though.”

The rapper accomplished a lot outside of music in the past year alone. He won an Oscar for his role in Two Distant Strangers. Meanwhile, he’s also played the role of Inspectah Deck during the first season of Wu-Tang: An American Saga before landing a role in the Power universe as the character Unique.

We’ll keep you posted on anymore updates regarding Joey Bada$$ next project. Peep the IG Live clip below.

Beer Company Pabst Blue Ribbon Apologizes For “Try Eating Ass” Tweet

The start of a New Year typically means the beginning of some sort of health change, whether that’s changing dietary habits or cutting alcohol out. For Pabst Blue Ribbon, that meant urging consumers to leap into their own vices in spite of the “Dry January” — a campaign created to encourage people to stay alcohol-free for the first month of the year.

Justin Sullivan/Getty Images

PBR launched the “Wet January” campaign in response. A problematic marketing scheme already, a social media manager likely found themselves in hot water over aggressive and offensive tweets aimed to spread awareness.

On Monday morning, a tweet from the company’s official page encouraged people who are participating in Dry January to perform what Desus & Mero would describe as anilingus. “Not drinking this January? Try eating ass,” the tweet read.

People were shocked and humored by the tweet, which the company ultimately took down. Though they continue to promote the tone-deaf “Wet January” slogan, the vice president of marketing PBR explained in a statement to Ad Age how the tweets were written in “poor judgment.”

“We apologize about the language and content of our recent tweets… the tweets in question were written in poor judgment by one of our associates… In no way does the content of these tweets reflect the values of Pabst and our Associates. We’re handling the matter internally and have removed the tweets from our social platforms,” the response reads.

While there was much backlash against “Wet January,” Twitter continued to flame the company over the social media mishap.

Check out a few reactions below.

Stephen A. Smith Breaks Recent Silence To Defend Mina Kimes

Just a few weeks ago, Stephen A. Smith announced to the world that he had COVID-19. This revelation was made just before Christmas, and since that time, fans had not heard from him. He has been largely absent from First Take and it is quite clear that the virus has had a strong effect on his physical and mental well-being.

With that being said, fans have been worried about Smith as his silence is certainly a rarity. Today, however, Stephen A. broke that silence as there was a very important matter at hand. In fact, it had to do with one of his colleagues at ESPN.

Mina Kimes has become a beloved NFL analyst on the network. Ever since transitioning from business writing to sports commentary, Kimes has proven herself to be one of the most knowledgeable football minds at the network, although her presence doesn’t always make everyone happy. For instance, Kimes received a pretty hurtful fan letter, to which she posted a sarcastic reply to.

Smith saw the slander being dished out by the hater and decided to make his thoughts known, saying “Ditto! @minakimes makes us all better. She’s phenomenal. Proud to have her on my team any day. Boy, that clown is lucky I’m still out with Covid!”

It remains to be seen when Stephen A. will return from his illness, however, it’s clear he still has a combative attitude, which is great to see.
