Ari Lennox’s Soulful ‘POF’ Features Background Vocals From J. Cole

Ari Lennox’s new album Age/Sex/Location is here, and though her labelmate J. Cole isn’t listed as an official feature, his voice is still present on the track “POF” as a background vocalist. Lennox rejects judgment of those around her in the soulful record, and Cole’s raspy yet emotive vocals are a nice touch.

“POF” arrives as part of Ari Lennox’s new album Age/Sex/Location. Age features Chloe, Lucky Daye, and Summer Walker and was led by the singles “Pressure” and “Hoodie.” The album was preceded by a surprise EP titled Away Message, labeled a truncated offering to tide fans over while Lennox took a social media hiatus until Age‘s release on Friday (September 9).

This is an exciting time for Ari Lennox fans as Age breaks an over three-year hiatus since her debut album Shea Butter Baby was released. In the interim, she appeared on the Dreamville compilation album Revenge Of The Dreamers III, Wale’s Wow…That’s Crazy, Summer Walker’s Still Over It, and the Dreamville and DJ Drama collaborative mixtape D-Day: A Gangsta Grillz Mixtape.

Age/Sex/Location is a meaningful release for the 31-year-old, shown in a long text message she sent to her J. Cole. “Transitional space. Very vulnerable codependent and validation seeking part of my life,” she wrote. “I remember the countless times I was kicked out of dating apps because they didn’t think I was really myself, it reminded me of those age/sex/location days where I actually wasn’t being myself in those chat rooms.”

J. Cole Is As Excited For Ari Lennox’s Upcoming Album As She Is: ‘I Can’t Wait ‘Til This Sh*t Comes Out’

Though J. Cole is a man of few words, one thing he is loud and proud about is the artists on his label. Dreamville presents itself as a family through its constant collaborations and support. As Ari Lennox prepares for her forthcoming album Age/Sex/Location, which will release on September 9, The Off Season artist is making his excitement for the project well known.

In a video posted to Twitter, J. Cole can be found in the studio with the Shea Butter Baby artist giving her praises and also making suggestions. “You can go like a quick, little four bar pre-hook type thing,” he says in the video. In other portions, he can be shown nodding along aggressively, making the mean face many music listeners make when they are enjoying a song.

Cole and Lennox previously collaborated on the Shea Butter Baby title track which also appeared on the Creed II soundtrack. Just this week, Lennox shared the EP Away Message to tide over listeners during her internet hiatus before Age/Sex/Location releases. Away Message is a five-track EP with a feature from Summer Walker on “Queen Space.” Also ahead of Age, Lennox has shared the singles “Pressure” and “Hoodie“.

Ari Lennox Shares A New EP ‘Away Message’ Ahead Of Her Forthcoming Album

Ari Lennox has kept fans waiting for some time since her 2019 debut album Shea Butter Baby. After months of teasing new music, showing off a whiteboard with hundreds of song titles, and officially announcing her follow-up album Age/Sex/Location for September 9, the Dreamville artist has shared an EP to tide fans over until album release day comes.

The 5-song EP Away Message is led by “Queen Space” featuring Summer Walker, which was released early on Wednesday. Later that evening, the 31-year-old announced she would be taking a hiatus from the Internet until September 9, and this EP was her “away message.” Walker, who Lennox previously collaborated with on her November 2021 album Still Over It (“Unloyal”), is the sole feature on the EP.

Other Away Message song titles include “Tatted,” “Gummy,” “No Settling,” and “Bitter.” Her labelmate and Dreamville co-founder J. Cole posted a lengthy screenshot from a text conversation early Wednesday in which Lennox described what this album meant to her. “Transitional space. Very vulnerable and codependent validation seeking part of my life,” the “New Apartment” artist said. “I remember the countless times I was kicked out of dating apps because they didn’t think I was really myself.”

Lennox never shies away from her feelings, so if Away Message is any indication, Age/Sex/Location might let listeners into her world in a deeper way than she ever has before.

J. Cole Shares A Message From Ari Lennox Detailing Her New Album, ‘Age/Sex/Location’

Millennials and Gen-Xers have been reeling over the title of Ari Lennox‘s upcoming album, Age/Sex/Location. Named for an introductory question often used in the chatrooms of the ’90s and early aughts, Age/Sex/Location represents a time in Lennox’s life where she feels she wasn’t being her authentic self.

Ahead of the album’s release next Friday, Lennox’s Dreamville label founder J. Cole shared a message from Lennox explaining the experiences from which she drew for the songs on the album.

“I asked Ari what this new album means to her,” said Cole in the caption of the post. “I needed to know cuz I f*ck with it so heavy. What I hear is the highs, lows, joys and pains of dating life in 2022. But her answer made it even deeper for me. Appreciate you @arilennox Looking forward to the rest of the world hearing it.”

In her message, Lennox said the album represents “Transitional space. Very vulnerable codependent and validation seeking part of my life,” she wrote. “I remember the countless times I was kicked out of dating apps because they didn’t think I was really myself, it reminded me of those age/sex/location days where I actually wasn’t being myself in those chat rooms.”

Elsewhere in her message, Lennox explained that she is at a point in her life, in which she is “Allowing accountability and maturing. Allowing growth to happen. Allowing self worth and self love and inner work to happen. Allowing therapy. Allowing dating me to happen. Doing things I like to do whenever I want.”

Ari Lennox Reveals The Lush Cover Art For Her New Album, ‘Age/Sex/Location’

Ahead of her upcoming, hotly anticipated sophomore album, Age/Sex/Location, Ari Lennox has revealed the album’s cover art. On the cover, Lennox is seen leaning over a body of water, bedecked in jewels, in front of open curtains, revealing a vibrant sunset in the background.

Earlier this month, Lennox released the smooth, sultry “Hoodie” as the latest single from the album. Last year, she gave us the first taste of the album with the Jermaine Dupri-produced, “Pressure.

In a rare interview with Vibe, Lennox says this album will demonstrate her growth since the release of her debut, Shea Butter baby in 2019.

“I think [on] Shea Butter Baby, I romanticize a lot of things in life,” Lennox says.” I feel like I was very naive about a lot of things about romance, about myself, about career, life, whatever, and I feel like I’m just more aware now, more evolved, [and] more, not putting up with certain sh*t I don’t like.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Lennox said the album will comprise of “a lot of attention to detail, and a lot of vulnerability.”

Age/Sex/Location will contain 12 songs, but earlier this year, Lennox revealed she wrote and recorded 80 tracks for the album.
