Grammy Awards 2025: 5 Albums That Deserved A Best Rap Album Nomination

The 2025 Grammy Awards nominations were revealed on November 8th. The Best Rap Album category has, historically, been a source of contention among hip-hop fans for their inconsistency. For every great moment, like Nas finally capturing the award for the unexpectedly fantastic comeback album King’s Disease in 2021 (the award did not even exist when Illmatic released in 1994), there is an equally perplexing moment, like Macklemore’s The Heist beating out Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city in 2014.

J. Cole’s Might Delete Later, Eminem’s The Death of Slim Shady: Coup de Grace, Doechii’s Alligator Bites Never Heal, Future & Metro Boomin’s We Don’t Trust You, and Common & Pete Rock’s The Auditorium, Vol. 1 make up the Best Rap Album category this year. Here are five more albums released in 2024 that I believe could also have been nominated for the divisive, but prestigious, award. The submission eligibility period this year covers albums released between September 16, 2023, and August 30, 2024. Therefore, anything released after that (i.e. LL Cool J & Q-Tip’s The FORCE and Blu & Exile’s Love (the) Ominous World) did not make the list.

ScHoolboy Q – Blue Lips

ScHoolboy Q has received two Best Rap Album nominations in his career. The first came in 2015 for Oxymoron, the album that doubled as Q’s breakthrough into commercial viability (thanks in part to the success of “Studio,” the track with BJ the Chicago Kid that gave Q his first top 40 single as a lead artist). The second came in 2017 for the stunning Blank Face LP, one of the greatest hip-hop albums of the 21st century. Blue Lips, his first album in nearly five years, feels much more like a spiritual successor to Blank Face than a follow-up to 2019’s CrasH Talk.

Blue Lips is enigmatic and uncompromising, much like its creator. ScHoolboy Q deftly moves between booming beats (“THank god 4 me,” “Back n Love”) and jazzy introspection (“Blueslides,” “Germany 86’”). It’s emblematic of a maturity that Q, like many others in his age range, has found in his personal life. Raps about his daughter, mother, lost friends, and continued growth as a man show where he is now. They even offer a bit of insight into where he wants to be in the future.

An album as ambitious in its sound as this one can sometimes come across as varied to the point that it borders on disjointedness. That does not happen here. Q crafts a cohesive listen, delivering a piece of work that never feels overbearing. Blue Lips, in all its eclectic glory, is a work by a master of his craft operating with a new outlook on life and his art. It would have been more than worthy of Best Rap Album consideration at the 2025 Grammy Awards.

Vince Staples – Dark Times

Dark Times is Vince Staples’ final album for Def Jam and a triumphant love letter to the city that raised him. It’s a remarkably mature project and a culmination of over ten years of development both professionally and personally. The more pointed reckonings with the trauma that still influences his decisions today contrast with a younger Staples. Ten years ago, he would have addressed his reality with a sardonic, sarcastic response that masked greater uncertainties.

The vulnerability displayed on Dark Times from the usually very guarded Long Beach rapper leads to some of the sharpest writing of Staples’ career. The nihilism that underscored everything he released from 2011’s Shyne Coldchain, Vol. 1 to 2022’s Ramona Park Broke My Heart gives way to a sense of cautious optimism. “Life hard, but I go harder,” Staples raps on “Little Homies,” a standout cut from the album’s back half. That willingness to go hard resulted in one of 2024’s most award-ready albums. Dark Times would not at all have been out of place among the year’s Best Rap Album nominees, especially since Staples has never been nominated for a Grammy.

Rapsody – Please Don’t Cry

There are few rappers active today who can go bar for bar with Rapsody. Please Don’t Cry, the North Carolina native’s fourth album, is another shining example of this. It’s raw and bold, comfortably her most upfront album to date. And it is also her most diverse, moving from the boom-bap stylings of her mentor 9th Wonder and his fellow Justus League member Khrysis, into a dynamic soundscape, with beats from S1, Hit-Boy, BLK ODYSSY, and a surprising amount of 808s. She embraces the difficulty of life, recalling her younger years. Rapsody rhymes about insecurities that come from her spot in the game, and the several probes by the public into her dating life and sexuality. She brushes it all off, with witty middle fingers to her detractors (“Asteroids,” “Look What You’ve Done”). By the end, she comes to terms with who she is as a woman–despite how messy she may be (“Forget Me Not”). Please Don’t Cry is an excellent album that easily could have netted Rapsody a second Best Rap Album Grammy nomination.

Logic – Ultra 85

In 2018, Logic received two Grammy nominations, one for Best Rap Song and another for Best Music Video. Both of those nominations came from “1-800-273-8255,” the Alessia Cara and Khalid-assisted hit single that inspired thousands of calls to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline upon its release. The song is by far the biggest of Logic’s career. Its impact on the people, particularly those who were struggling at the time, is undeniable. Since that dalliance with the mainstream, Logic has not really come close to another nomination at the awards show. Ultra 85, the vibrant and thoughtful ninth album from the Gaithersburg MC, is one of 2024’s most creative albums. It is a release that could have easily found a spot in the field this year.

The self-assured nature in his lyrics and flow (“Paul Rodriguez”), willingness to dive into some truly uncomfortable territory on a wide range of topics (“Favela,” “Teleport”), and smooth old-school-tinged production primarily handled by longtime collaborator 6ix and Logic himself, come together in the most “Logic”-feeling album to date. It is the direct result of over fifteen years of honing his craft and coming out of his shell. He went from drowning in his influences to using them to shape music that is true to who he is: a man with a very hard upbringing who had his life saved by hip-hop. It is a remarkable release, among the most complete offerings in rap this year, and one worthy of recognition.

Lupe Fiasco – Samurai

Lupe Fiasco has not been nominated for Best Rap Album at the Grammy Awards since 2013. There, Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album received a nod. Since departing from Atlantic Records in 2015, Lupe has released some of the most fully realized work of his career. Samurai stands as arguably his strongest release since embracing life as an independent artist.

Produced entirely by Soundtrakk, Samurai aims to answer the question of “What would Amy Winehouse sound like if she was a battle rapper?” It is a concept lifted from a quote in the 2015 documentary Amy. In the quote, the late singer likens her lyrics to “battle raps” in a conversation with producer Salaam Remi. Based on this Lupe Fiasco album, the answer appears to be “outstanding.” Lupe is in rare form across the project. His already sharp pen has only gotten sharper in middle age. It feels like a direct rebuttal to the notion that hip-hop is a “young man’s game.” Tracks like “Mumble Rap” and “No. 1 Headband” are truly virtuosic. Lupe raps over some of the jazziest, most pristine beats of the year. Perhaps Samurai does not reach the highs of his first two albums. Even with that, Lupe Fiasco is an undeniable force as an MC. He took his place among the genre’s best years ago and not letting go of that spot. It is yet another album worthy of recognition, and one that, like the preceding four albums on the list, could have found a seat among this year’s Grammy nominees.

The Grammys Best New Artist Category Eligibility Has Been Clarified, After Its 2025 Nominees Caused Major Confusion

grammys

Without fail, every year the Grammy Awards cause an uproar across one genre or another. Although fans’ chatter about snub is still at the top of online forum, the 2025 Grammys nomination list sparked another interesting question. What qualifies an artist as “new?”

Yesterday (November 12), the Recording Academy took to its official Instagram page to seemingly clarify the eligibility for the Best New Artist category.

“Every year, the #GRAMMYs Best New Artist category acknowledges rising stars who are shaping the future of music through their own artistry,” read the post (viewable here). “Little does it matter if they have just a few singles or 10 studio albums under their belts. The Best New Artist Category is all about highlighting how an act pushes creative boundaries and challenges a saturated industry with outstanding — and sometimes surprising — music.”

This statement subtly addresses the growing discussion around veteran acts like Khruangbin and Sabrina Carpenter could even found themselves competing against newer stars like Doechii, Raye, Teddy Swims, Benson Boone, and Shaboozey for a coveted gramophone trophy.

Khruangbin’s debut album, The Universe Smiles Upon You, was released nearly a decade ago. The same goes for Sabrina Carpenter’s Eyes Wide Open. But based on the Recording Academy’s post, an artist’s breakthrough is weighed more heavily. Maybe the Recording Academy will reconsider their three submission rule for the category to allow Uproxx cover Tate McRae a chance to compete based on this logic.

Well, the official Best New Artist winner won’t be announced until February 2, 2025, which is bound to cause yet another online teasy.

Lil Wayne & Drake Put On Blast For Not Defending Nicki Minaj Amid Grammy Snub

The 2025 Grammy Awards nominations arrived last week, and have since earned mixed reactions from social media users. While some are celebrating the impressive number of nominations for artists like Beyonce and Kendrick Lamar, others are calling attention to the lack of recognition for other favorites like Nicki Minaj. The “FTCU” rapper didn’t receive a single nomination despite the success of her album Pink Friday 2, which has the Barbz up in arms.

While this is nothing new for Nicki, countless supporters are coming to her defense online, and arguing that she deserved better. Some are even calling out her celebrity peers for not bringing more attention to the issue. After the nominations were announced, for example, Capella Grey took to X to seemingly call out Lil Wayne and Drake.

Capella Grey Appears To Question Lil Wayne & Drake’s Loyalty

“Drake and Wayne cant act so clueless when it come to loyalty all the time. now i pree y shorty b so tight ngl. she risking her whole reputation on rants to defend em, & theyre response really be ‘lol im neutral chill’ when its on the [reverse]. Mayb NY’ers just move diff? .. yea idk,” the performer wrote. Unsurprisingly, Grey’s post has sparked a major debate. Several fans in his replies are accusing Nicki herself of being disloyal, and arguing that Lil Wayne and Drake have no obligation to defend her.

This prompted Grey to walk back his comments. “Ma fault. I aint know the disloyalty was so both ways,” he wrote in a follow-up tweet. “Lemme just stay outta ppl business on twitter.” What do you think of Capella Grey calling out Lil Wayne and Drake for not defending Nicki Minaj after she wasn’t nominated for a Grammy? What about him changing his stance later? Share your thoughts in the comments section down below and keep an eye on HNHH for more updates.

André 3000 Is ‘Surprised’ That He Secured An Album Of The Year Grammy Nomination For ‘New Blue Sun’

Yesterday (November 8), the 2025 Grammy Awards full nomination list was revealed. While many of the nominations came as no surprise, the Album Of The Year category shocked many music lovers. The biggest jaw-dropper came from Andre 3000’s long-awaited debut album (which happens to be an instrumental project), New Blue Sun nod.

During an interview with Variety, André 3000 shared his reaction to the nominations. “I felt that we tried to campaign to see if we could get into the alternative jazz or ambient category,” he said. “So this morning, when the album of the year category popped up, I was really, really surprised because I didn’t think that that many people even knew about it. So I’m just happy that the votes came in that way and that people were paying attention, more than anything.”

The nomination certainly shocked fans. While Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter, Chappell Roan’s The Rise And Fall Of A Midwest Princess, Charli XCX’s Brat, Sabrina Carpenter’s Short N’ Sweet, Billie Eilish’s Hit Me Hard And Soft, Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department were considered shoo-ins; André 3000’s New Blue Sun and Jacob Collier’s Djesse Vol. 4 are this year’s dark horses.

The 2025 Grammy Awards are scheduled to take place on February 2, 2025. Only then will viewers learn which musician takes home the coveted gramophone trophy.

Andre 3000, GloRilla, Run-DMC, & More React To Their Grammy Nominations

About 24 hours ago, The Recording Academy unveiled the GRAMMY nominees for 2025. There are some major headlines, especially in hip-hop, thanks to two names in particular. Kendrick Lamar is being rewarded with seven nominations thanks to his several diss tracks aimed at Drake. Then, there’s Beyonce, who’s putting up never-before-seen numbers for women. She is up for 11 categories, which breaks her own previous record of 10 back in 2010.

But there are many others making noise for their recent releases too. Their excitement has carried over to social media, according to AllHipHop, and they are thanking their fans and the Academy for their support. GloRilla, who’s been on a tear with two LPs and hit after hit, hopped on X (Twitter) to shout out her fanbase and herself. “S/O to God my team & y’all not to be cocky but shiiidddd S/O to MEEEE!! 3x Grammy nominated artist thank yall so much.”

However, despite how legendary Andre 3000 is, he had a time fathoming that his controversial flute album, New Blue Sun, would be up for Album of the Year. In speaking with Variety, the OutKast member said, “I felt that we tried to campaign to see if we could get into the alternative jazz or ambient category. So, this morning, when the album of the year category popped up, I was really, really surprised because I didn’t think that that many people even knew about it. Nicki Minaj Fans Are Livid Over Her Lack Of 2025 Grammys Nominations For “Pink Friday 2”

The 2025 Grammy Awards nominations are finally here, and it was a big day for women in the music industry. Beyoncé led the whole pack of nominees – any gender – with 11 nominations, the most for any woman in a single year and the most total career nominations (now 99) for any artist. However, there were still some big snubs to talk about concerning these nominations, including a big gap that many Barbz understandably noticed. Despite its submission in multiple categories, Nicki Minaj and her late 2023 album Pink Friday 2 did not receive any nods, including tracks like “Everybody” and “FTCU.” As you can see in the Instagram post down below and its comments, a lot of fans felt like this was a poor decision on behalf of the Recording Academy.

After all, Nicki Minaj found a lot of success with Pink Friday 2 as one of the biggest albums of the past year or so, especially in the commercial realm. Still, other Barbz instead focused on other amazing achievements from this year and the last (a record-breaking tour, other awards, etc.) instead of lamenting the lack of recognition from just one institution. Also, it’s not like the Grammys are the end-all, be-all of the recognition of quality, impactful, and significant music.

The Barbz React To Nicki Minaj’s Grammy Snubs

Some artists get a lot of love from the Grammys, others don’t, and a few massive stars just don’t submit their work at all. With all this in mind, we wonder if the Recording Academy will address these snubs, whether it’s Nicki Minaj or other artists. As for other hip-hop happenings with the Grammy Awards, Kendrick Lamar led the rap world with seven total nominations split across two of his Drake diss tracks. Certainly not the best look for any Recording Academy members looking to combat the narrative of a Young Money bias…

Jokes aside, Nicki Minaj doesn’t need Grammys to acknowledge her magnanimous presence in the game, her untouchable status, and the blessings that continue to come her way. For example, she recently penned a cute anniversary post for her husband, Kenneth Petty. Still, we can’t lie that some more flowers for the Trinidadian femcee wouldn’t hurt.

Cardi B Drops New Song Snippet To Celebrate Grammy Nomination

The 2025 Grammy Awards are coming soon, and we finally got the list of nominees in all its categories. This obviously sparked a lot of discussion, but fortunately, it also led some artists with upcoming projects to fuel their rollout and teases a little more. Chief among these examples is Cardi B, who recently took to social media to celebrate her nomination in the Best Rap Performance category for “Enough (Miami)” and express her gratitude by sharing a new, dramatic, ominous snippet from her highly anticipated (and long-delayed) sophomore album. “Ahhhh so grateful..” she posted over a short audio of the snippet in question. “and the fact that this song is my light work. Whew!!! This album honey… anyways thank you guys. Enjoy your day!!”

Apart from Cardi B, other Best Rap Performance nominees this year include two Kendrick Lamar appearances with “Not Like Us” and the Future and Metro Boomin collab “Like That’ – one of seven K.Dot nods – plus nominations for Common and Pete Rock’s “When The Sun Shines Again” with De La Soul’s Posdnuos, Doechii’s “NISSAN ALTIMA,” Eminem’s “Houdini,” and GloRilla’s “Yeah Glo!”

Cardi B Teases New Music

As far as the wider Grammys nominations for 2025, Cardi B was not the only female superstar to land some nods with no 2024 album. SZA also picked up some nominations for her track “Saturn,” and Beyoncé made Grammy history with a leading 11 nominations this year, the most ever for a female artist in a single year. In addition, she’s now the most nominated artist in Recording Academy history. In the hip-hop categories, though, Doechii got a Best New Artist nod plus a Rap Album of the Year nomination, whereas other nominees in the latter category include J. Cole and Common and Pete Rock.

Back to Cardi B, the headlines around her these days center more around her extracurriculars than her musical career moves. For example, fans continue to try to guess her and Offset’s recent child’s name, and the election also brought about many strong statements from her. We’ll see if this Grammy nomination will lead to the reveal that the sophomore album is right around the corner.

Kendrick Lamar’s Five “Not Like Us” Grammy Nominations Leave Social Media Users Impressed

It’s no secret that it’s been a wildly successful year for Kendrick Lamar so far. The Compton-born rapper came out victorious in his viral feud with Drake, and broke records with his hit diss track “Not Like Us.” Now, it looks like he could be preparing for even more wins. Recently, it was also announced that he’s been nominated for seven awards at the 2025 Grammys.

Five of these awards are for “Not Like Us,” which is in the running for Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Music Video, and more. Future and Metro Boomin’s song “Like That,” which features Kendrick’s fiery guest verse which ignited the beef, is also up for two awards.

As expected, X is currently flooded with social media users’ reactions to the news. For the most part, it appears as though the public thinks Kendrick’s nominations are well-deserved, and expect him to take home at least a few awards. Of course, plenty of fans are also quoting Drake’s “Family Matters,” in which he appeared to predict this. “Kendrick just opened his mouth, someone go hand him a Grammy right now,” he rapped.

Obviously, this line has come back to haunt him, and Kendrick fans will not let him forget it any time soon. Kendrick has yet to address the nominations. Potentially winning more Grammys isn’t the only thing Kendrick Lamar has to look forward to, however. In February of next year, he’s also set the headline the 2025 Super Bowl halftime show, which will take place in New Orleans.

Beyonce Breaks Her Own Record With 2025 Grammy Nominations

It’s already been a huge year for Beyonce. The hitmaker unleashed her eighth studio album in March, COWBOY CARTER, just a few months after closing her record-breaking “Renaissance” tour. She also launched her own whiskey brand, SirDavis, which has already been a massive success. Now, she’s set a new record with her 2025 Grammy nominations.

According to Billboard, she’s in the running for 11 awards, the most ever in a year for a woman artist. She beat her own record, 10, which she previously shared with Lauryn Hill. Hill received 10 nods at the 1999 Grammys ceremony, and Beyonce at the 2010 ceremony. She’s competing for Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance, and more.

Other nominees include Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar, Billie Eilish, and more. News of Beyonce’s nominations arrives amid claims that she was snubbed at both the People’s Choice Country Awards and the Country Music Awards. She wasn’t nominated in a single category at the CMAs despite the success of COWBOY CARTER. She also left the PCCAs empty-handed despite being nominated for a whopping 17 awards.

Veteran of the genre Dolly Parton even weighed in on the snubs during an interview with Variety earlier this year. “There’s so many wonderful country artists that, I guess probably the country music field, they probably thought, well, we can’t really leave out some of the ones that spend their whole life doing that,” she said in part. What do you think of setting a new record for most Grammy nominations as a solo woman artist in one year? Kendrick Lamar Secures Seven Nominations For 2025 Grammys After Drake Beef

Kendrick Lamar just opened his mouth… and got seven nominations for the 2025 Grammy Awards, the ceremony for which will take place early next year. Of course, all these nods relate to the explosive battle with Drake from earlier this year, so let’s break them down. Starting with his gasoline over a dimly lit fire, the Future and Metro Boomin collab “Like That” was nominated for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song. As for the West Coast banger “Not Like Us,” this got a Best Music Video nomination, as well as nods in the following categories: Record of the Year (production), Song of the Year (songwriting), Best Rap Performance, and Best Rap Song.

Furthermore, we’re sure that a whole lot of pgLang riders and OVO Stans alike are debating all this online as we speak. Of course, it’s not much of a surprise: Drake himself predicted as such on “Family Matters,” and no one can deny the critical, commercial, and cultural impact of these diss tracks. Nevertheless, it now officially joins other Kendrick Lamar debates brought about by his greatness, such as the conversation around his upcoming Super Bowl halftime show next February.

Kendrick Lamar’s 2025 Grammy Nominations

In addition, all this news comes as we’re witnessing how the Kendrick Lamar and Drake beef bled over into other areas beyond hip-hop. Now, the question is whether it will result in an on-court NBA rivalry, as Drizzy attended a Toronto Raptors game against the Sacramento Kings to mean-mug and talk smack about Kings player (and former Raptor) DeMar DeRozan. The Compton native appeared in the now Grammy-nominated music video for “Not Like Us” and popped out onstage at K.Dot’s Juneteenth concert.

With all this in mind, it will be very exciting to see if Kendrick Lamar walks away with anything at the 2025 Grammy Awards, although it would just be small additions to much more important victories. Regardless of what you think of the Drake beef, “Not Like Us” in particular transcended its hip-hop environment and the other tracks he released this year rank among the biggest rap moments of not just the year, but the decade.
