Caleborate Shines On “Light Hit My Skin”

On the intro to his last project Hear Me Out, released in 2019, Caleborate rapped, “I’m tryna take it to another level, dawg/If you can’t see the vision then it ain’t no need to get involved/I’m saying, I just want someone to hear me out.” Now, nearly two years later, it’s clear that the Caleborate meant every word. His latest album Light Hit My Skin arrives today, and it is already looking like a major step forward for the Bay Area Hip-Hop artist.

The stacked full-length album boasts eight impressive guest appearances, including one from Kota the Friend on the previously heard single “Contact.” Other artists featured on Light Hit My Skin include Duckwrth, Deante’ Hitchcock, former Mass Appeal artist Cantrell, Cash Campain, RedVeil, Samaria, and Tone Sinatra. However, even with such an impressive line-up of guest artists, Light Hit My Skin still feels like an incredibly personal album, with Caleborate giving an energetic and passionate performance all throughout his latest full-length.

Taylor Swift Supports R&B Legend Anita Baker In Her Fight For Her Masters

In recent weeks, R&B legend Anita Baker has spent some time on Twitter sharing thoughts about her ongoing battle to take back control over her master recordings, which has apparently not gone in her favor so far. Now, Baker has found herself a supporter in Taylor Swift, who herself has famously had some legal drama about her own masters.

On March 9, Baker tweeted, “Miraculously… i have out-lived *ALL, of my Artists Contracts. They no longer ‘Own’, My Name & Likeness. And, by Law…30 yr old, Mstrs are 2B Returned, 2 Me. Unfortunately, They’re gonna make me Fight 4 it. I’m Prepared, 2 do that. Please Dont advertise/buy them ABXO.”

More recently, she gave props to Swift yesterday for how she handled her situation by re-recording her back catalog, writing, “Her creations bought & sold Again & Again, wouldnt even let her do *A Buy Out*…Taylor Swift *re-recording, her Catalog/Taylor’s Version. The GoodFight Go… Gurrrrl.” That got a response out of Swift, who wrote, “I’m cheering you on in your fight to get back your work, and appreciate your support so much!! Thank you.” Baker answered back, “This Solidarity is a Beautiful Thing! Thank You.”

Meanwhile, after Baker’s initial tweet, Chance The Rapper also chimed in with a message of support and a call to all of his fans, writing, “DO NOT LISTEN TO NO ANITA BAKER TIL THEY GIVE HER HER MASTERS BACK. TELL YO MAMA TO TELL A MAMA.”

49ers Divulge Their Intentions For Jimmy Garoppolo

Despite leading the San Francisco 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance just over a year ago, there has been a lot of talk around whether or not Jimmy Garoppolo is good enough to be the starter for the 49ers. Of course, the team mainly made the Super Bowl because of their defense and run-game, although Garoppolo still needed to be competent enough to make sure the team got where they needed to go.

Over these last few months, trade rumors have been circulating in regards to Garoppolo and after the 49ers traded up to the third overall pick today, there were even more rumblings that Jimmy G could be on the move. Now, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the 49ers have said that Garoppolo is their man and they don’t plan on demoting him anytime soon.

These kinds of declarations are typically meaningless especially with the NFL Draft still a month away. Teams love to say one thing and do the complete opposite, so we’re sure Jimmy G is still feeling a bit worried heading into the next few weeks.

After a disappointing season in 2020, the 49ers are looking to improve, and the third overall pick could perhaps bring them what they’ve needed for a while. Whether or not that is a franchise quarterback, remains to be seen.

Serpentwithfeet Delivers On His Long-Awaited Sophomore Album “DEACON”

One of the most innovative and genre-defiant artists currently out, serpentwithfeet has finally returned with his long-awaited and highly-anticipated follow-up to his stellar debut soil. Three years later, the Los Angeles-based artist has unleashed his sophomore album DEACON, which features the previously heard “Same Size Shoe” and “Fellowship.” Similar to soilDEACON features 11 tracks, but apart from that, serpentwithfeet’s latest album finds the artist in a completely different creative place.

Trading in the fantastical and Shakespearian songwriting of soil for a more straightforward style of expression, DEACON expertly displays serpent’s growth as an artist since his 2018 debut. The sonic variation is one of the album’s most impressive aspects upon first listen, as the production transitions from the spacy and dreamy soundscapes that the Los Angeles-based artist is known for to contemporary Hip-Hop beats, traditional church-style production, and hints of flavors from music around the globe.

DEACON arrives on Secretly Canadian, and it features songwriting and production contributions from NAO, Lil Silva, Sampha, Batu, Justus West, Brandon Juhans, and production duo Take A Daytrip. With a runtime of right under 30 minutes, serpentwithfeet’s sophomore outing practically begs for back-to-back listens, so stream the new eleven-track album below.

Tracklist:

1. Hyacinth
2. Same Size Shoe
3. Malik
4. Amir
5. Dawn
6. Sailors’ Superstition
7. Heart Storm (with NAO)
8. Wood Boy
9. Derrick’s Beard
10. Old & Fine
11. Fellowship

Anthony Davis Injury Receives Update From Frank Vogel

Anthony Davis is one of the best players in the NBA when he is healthy. Last season, Davis was a top-five player in the league and he was a massive reason for why the Los Angeles Lakers were able to win an NBA championship inside of the Orlando bubble. This season, Davis had a bit of a slow start but he eventually found his rhythm. Unfortunately, an injury to his calf has kept him out of the lineup and it still seems to be giving him some trouble.

The team was optimistic that he would be back by early March, although at this point, he still needs to undergo frequent evaluations. In fact, Lakers head coach Frank Vogel recently spoke to reporters about Davis and had a concerning message. Basically, there is no real timeline for AD at this point.

“I really don’t want to get into every little detail on what he’s doing on each day. But he’s still a ways away,” Vogel said. This is not good news for the Lakeshow especially when you think about LeBron’s injury and how the team is currently shorthanded.

If you’re a Lakers fan, this is a nerve-wracking time although once they are full strength again, they will most certainly be among the best teams in the entire NBA.

Halle Bailey Stuns Everyone With A Flawless Cover of SWV’s “Rain”

Whenever a Verzuz is announced, it seems like artists in the music industry are just excited for the showdowns as fans and consumers are. Right around the time when City Girls’ Yung Miami was expressing interest and taking sides in a rumored Verzuz featuring legendary female rappers Lil Kim and TrinaHalle Bailey of Chloe x Halle appeared to have the upcoming “SWV V. Xscape” Verzuz on her mind, as she dropped off a flawless cover to one of SWV’s biggest hits.

At the start of the year, Halle Bailey and her sister, Chloe, finally created their own solo Instagram and Twitter accounts, and ever since then, the two singer-songwriters have been turning heads left and right with their captivating social media presence. Chloe Bailey recently left some great impressions on listeners with soulful covers of Yung Bleu’s “You’re Mine’s Still” and Silk Sonic’s “Leave The Door Open,” and now Halle is showing off her incredible vocal talents with a cover of SWV’s classic record “Rain.”

Having left the caption, “when you can’t sleep you sing,” it’s safe to say that Halle put a productive spin on her insomnia because her cover of “Rain” has left several artists, public figures, and fans impressed with her impeccable vocal performance. Starting off at the song’s second verse before diving into the song’s iconic hook, Halle’s TikTok cover of “Rain” further illustrates the sheer amount of talent shared between her and her sister’s group Chloe x Halle.

Which sister do you think has shared the best cover so far?

Shelley Is ‘Cooking With Grease’ In His Latest ‘Shelley Show’ Video

The rapper and singer formerly known as DRAM is turning up the heat on his release rollout, sharing the video for “Cooking With Grease.” Continuing the “Shelley Show” conceit from his last single release, “Exposure,” Shelley once again frames the video as a live performance on a fictional late-night talk show. Backed by his band, Shelley shows off his falsetto on a seductive, R&B throwback that portends more midnight storm-style jams to come.

Ever since officially changing his performance name on DSPs and social media, Shelley has leaned more than ever into his R&B side, which he previously teased on his debut album, Big Baby DRAM, his 2018 EP, That’s A Girl’s Name, and on singles like “The Lay Down” featuring H.E.R. and Watt. The “Shelley Show” rollout has cleverly addressed the musical shift as well, letting Shelley “interview” DRAM for more insight into the reasoning behind it.

“Cooking With Grease” also has a clever double meaning thanks to Shelley’s new quarantine hobby. He’s turned that hobby into a self-shot food show on YouTube called “Cooking With Grease,” in which he demonstrates his favorite healthy recipes, which helped him lose weight during the pandemic and emerge as a whole new man, figuratively and — well, also figuratively.

Watch the “Cooking With Grease” video above.

Shelley is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.
