Shannon Sharpe believes Jalen Hurts’ contract is more than earned. Hurts signed a 5-year $255 million contract extension with the Philadelphia Eagles. The contract makes Hurts the highest-paid player in the NFL. However, Sharpe sees this as more than a player getting their money. But the contract should be seen as a celebration for black athletes. Also, not just a celebration for black athletes. But for every black quarterback who was told they couldn’t play the position. Something we all know has been proven wrong time and time again.
“It’s good to see a Black man whether for a week or a month be the highest-paid player in the NFL,” Sharpe declared when discussing Hurts’ contract. The league has seen a lot of success recently with black quarterbacks in the league. Sharpe even mentioned some of the highlights. Including this past Super Bowl being the first time in league history that both starting quarterbacks were black. Also, Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes being MVPs of the league are major milestones.

From his agent and marketing campaign to his communication team. Hurts’ brand is ran entirely by women. Another huge milestone in the movement for equality in the NFL. Now the pressure could be on for Hurts to deliver a lot for the Eagles with his new contract. However, Hurts has always understood the pressure.
Hurts has been through so much adversity in his playing career already. So, playing with the weight of a franchise on his shoulders should be no issue. Hurts could even take a few notes from Shannon Sharpe. Sharpe is a Hall-of-Famer, and deservedly so.
