Mathew Knowles Says Beyoncé & Chloe Bailey Comparisons Are “Insulting”

Dr. Mathew Knowles, father of Beyoncé and Solange, was the guest of Leah A. Henry’s podcast Leah’s Lemonade where he spoke about his latest moves, including his Mathew Knowles IMPACT show. The interview was going well until the very end when Mathew was asked about social media comparisons between Beyoncé and Chloe Bailey of Chloe x Halle. Given Beyoncé’s close connection to the sister duo, many have been comparing Chloe to a young Bey, pitching the singer to potentially play the legendary Queen Bey in any upcoming movies about her.

When the interviewer asked about the comparisons between Chloe and Bey, Mathew was instantly offended by the question. “You’ve got to be kidding me, right? You’re asking me that question?” said Dr. Knowles. “Are you actually serious that you are comparing that young lady to Beyoncé?” When Leah specified that the question was geared more about a potential biopic, Knowles opened up. “Okay, if you’re talking about a movie– not talent-wise. Talent-wise? Are you telling me talent-wise, somebody is an idiot enough to compare her to Beyoncé talent-wise? Are there people saying her talent is equal to Beyonce? They’re idiots. That’s actually insulting to Beyoncé.”

The question derailed the entire hour-long interview, and it forced Mathew to walk out and chastise the interviewer by saying that she never should have asked the question, also correcting her when she referred to him as his first name, asking to be referred to by “Mr. Knowles”. He read some of the live comments coming in, called out the fans who were upset by his Chloe Bailey comments, and abruptly left.

People are upset about Mathew Knowles’ comments, saying that he should not have been so harsh and that it was inappropriate to bash the young artist. While Beyoncé may be his daughter, and he certainly has a right to think that Bey is more talented than Chloe Bailey, his shade toward Chloe was a little uncalled for.

Gucci Mane Reads Classic Literature In MSCHF’s “Project Gucciberg” Deepfake

Just as news surfaced about the eerily realistic Tom Cruise deepfake going viral on TikTok, another public figure has fallen victim to artificial intelligence. MSCHF, the experimental creative brand behind Future’s $46,000 sandals made from deconstructed Hermès Birkin bags, has used deep learning technology to create an incredibly accurate AI version of Gucci Mane‘s voice. And the first thing that they use it for? To read classic literature.

Coined Project Gucciberg, MSCHF’s peculiar new creative endeavor features the AI version of Gucci Mane reading classic literature, from Pride & Prejudice and A Tale of Two Cities to The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Beowulf. In addition to the sonic appeal of combining old English with Gucci Mane’s signature southern drawl, each of the new audiobooks features classic Gucci cover art, remixed to fit the respective book.

MSCHF explains the project by saying, “Gucci Mane is an iconic voice. Project Gutenberg is an archive of famous works of Western literature that have entered the public domain. A great voice plus a great book creates a killer audiobook!”

“We didn’t write the books, and we deepfaked the voice. Is this copyright infringement? Is it identity theft?” The brand continues while touching on the legality of its Gucci Mane-inspired endeavor. “All of the training data (recordings) used to make Project Gucciberg were publicly available on the web. Gucciberg lives in that lovely grey area where everything’s new and anything goes.”

It’s yet to be seen if Gucci Mane is a fan of Project Gucciberg or not, so we’ll have to wait and see whether he finds it humorous or takes any legal action. In the meantime, will you finally be giving some of these classics a shot now that Gucci Mane is reading them?

In fact, a complete list reveals that many hip-hop heavyweights are looking to get back into the game this coming weekend, a judgment call that may raise some eyebrows.

Tiger Woods Crash: Police Receive Warrant To Search Car’s Black Box

Just a couple of weeks ago, legendary golfer Tiger Woods ended up in a horrific car crash that left him with devastating injuries that will keep him out of the sport for a very long time. These injuries include a shattered ankle and even a compound fracture that forced the golfer to go get surgery. Since the accident, many have wondered what truly happened and how Woods’ car could end up in such a bad state.

According to TMZ, the L.A. County Sheriff now has a search warrant for the car’s black box. For those who don’t know, the black box contains a whole slew of data that will tell you the speeds of the car prior to the crash. Essentially, the cops want to know if Tiger was breaking any laws at the time of the incident.

There is only one offense that Tiger could be guilty of and it would be misdemeanor reckless driving. Because of the severity of the crash, the Sheriff was able to obtain the warrant with ease, as these types of violent accidents are more often than not caused by high speeds.

As it stands, Tiger is on the mend and has been transferred to a new hospital where he will have to undergo rigorous physical therapy. We wish the golfing superstar a speedy recovery, and hopefully, he can get back to the course sooner rather than later.

D Smoke Helps Fireboy DML Plant His Flag In The Inspiring ‘Champion’ Video

In the video for Fireboy DML’s “Champion,” the 25-year-old Abeokuta, Ogun, Nigeria native recruits burgeoning Inglewood-born superstar D Smoke as the two recite defiant, self-confident lyrics over an uptempo Afropop beat. The two indie labelmates stage an international link-up to deliver a fist-pumping anthem amid sweeping backdrops, declaring themselves legends in the making as a choir sings the refrain.

Fireboy DML is half a year removed from his latest full-length release, the Headie-winning Apollo. The project obtained Best R&B Album honors earlier this year, while Fireboy himself earned a Viewer’s Choice award. The album single “Tattoo” also won Best R&B Single. Last month, Fireboy told DJ Booth of “Champion,” “I want to go down a legend. I want my music to live forever and continue to change people’s lives long after I’m gone. I also want to be remembered not just as a good musician but as a good person.”

D Smoke will seek to follow-up on his collaborator’s success at this year’s Grammy Awards later this month. His album Black Habits is up for Best Rap Album while the Netflix Rhythm + Flow winner also contends for Best New Artist.

‘Biggie: I Got A Story To Tell’ Shows How The Notorious B.I.G. Epitomized Hip-Hop

To be perfectly honest — following the example set by the late, great Christopher Wallace himself — the world didn’t need another Biggie Smalls documentary. The details of The Notorious B.I.G’s life and death have been thoroughly picked over by now, nearly 23 years later, with dozens of works from books and films to podcasts and television series providing reams of conjecture, speculation, and solemn reflection on the gritty self-styled King Of New York who rose from the streets of Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn to become the epitome of the “ashy to classy” archetype established by hip-hop in the decades since.

That didn’t stop Netflix from releasing yet another entry to the growing canon of works about the Brooklyn big man this week, the hyperfocused and touchingly graceful Biggie: I Got A Story To Tell. But where this more down-to-earth production differs from those that came before it is its intent attention to Christopher, the person at the center of the mythos, rather than on the lurid details of his beef with Tupac or his violent, unsolved death in Los Angeles on March 9, 1997.

Nearly an hour of the film’s 90-minute runtime is devoted to Wallace’s life before he released his game-changing debut album, Ready To Die, in 1994. Through interviews with his mother, Voletta Wallace, and unseen archival footage provided by Big’s right-hand man, Damion “D-Roc” Butler, a clearer picture of Christopher Wallace is developed throughout. From his trips to visit his mother’s family in her native Jamaica to the early musical education he received from a neighbor, jazz musician Donald Harrison, we can see the foundation of his unique, seismic flow and outsized stage persona.

In one particularly engaging scene, Harrison breaks down how Big’s flow imitated the rat-a-tat tapping of a bebop drummer, his percussive delivery playing invisible notes as he freestyled on corners. Scenes like this one offer new lenses through which to view iconic moments like Big’s sidewalk battle with Supreme; while familiarity can breed contempt, Harrison’s quick jazz lesson gives viewers new context and deeper understanding of not just the battle, but Big’s songwriting approach as a whole.

The film also touches on Big’s time spent dealing drugs around the corner from the apartment he shared with his mother, this time with the added texture of commentary from the men who stood out there with him. One, an elder ex-hustler named Chico Del Vec, spends much of his intro fussing at the cameraman that he doesn’t want to get into details of “the game” before crisply detailing the mentality that drove young boys like Big and his friends into it with a veteran’s well-weathered perspective. “If you wasn’t into hustling, good in sports, or going to school, you was a nobody,” he summarizes.

But Big’s cohort is also clear-eyed about their bad decisions as well. Here, just 30 minutes in, the film crystallizes the core concepts of hip-hop, its artifice and artfulness, its originality and creativity, and its universality. These 14-year-old kids had no clue of the world beyond their borough; as Big explains in an interview clip of his breakout hit “Juicy,” he didn’t know that there was money in rap. He only knew what he saw on the covers of magazines, that his favorite rappers wore gold chains and posed with flashy new cars. It never occurred to him that his hazy childhood vision of becoming an art dealer could be every bit as lucrative (and, in truth, probably more so, the way contracts were structured in those days).

It’s what makes Big — and his story — the perfect avatar of hip-hop, from its artists to its fans. He could have been any one of them. By focusing on his humble beginnings, I Got A Story To Tell finally humanizes him in a way few of the biopics or mini-series ever could because the focus shifts away from the big, pivotal moments of a hip-hop legend’s life to tell a simpler story about a boy with a dream, who hung out with his friends, got into trouble, got scared straight by a tragic loss, and persevered through normal, relatable doubts to remain as close to still being the person he always was when fame finally found him.

Of course, staying away from the more familiar notes of his greater life story allows the film to polish his rough edges, such as his alleged abuse of his romantic partners — which again, reflects a broader tendency in hip-hop and pop culture of flattening and simplifying complicated people. At one point early on, Sean Combs — you know he had to make an appearance here, although the film wisely minimizes his presence — notes, “You always were able to hear some remnants of previous rap artists. This guy, I don’t know where he came from with his cadence, with his rhythms, with his sound…” From Compton rapper King Tee, Puff.

But, then again, those rough edges are plain to see in other places. The point of Netflix’s documentary is to add another layer of context and humanity to the legend. It explains a little more of the hows and whys surrounding Big. When the film ends — as the 2009 biopic Notorious did — just after Big’s celebratory 1997 memorial in his hometown, it does so with a better understanding of the person who actually died, beyond the loss of his musical potential. So, did the world need another Biggie Smalls documentary? The answer is still “no,” but we’re all better for this one’s existence.

Lil Durk Gets New King Von Memory Chain

A few weeks ago, there was a false alarm when a jeweler seemingly tried to pass off an enamel chain that he made as a commissioned piece for Lil Durk. After the Chicago rapper claimed that he had no involvement in the creation of the “weak ass chain”, it was clear that the piece was not actually his. However, that doesn’t mean that he didn’t have immediate plans to commemorate his partner King Von, who was tragically killed in a shooting incident last year, with some iced-out jewelry.

We’ve already seen Asian Doll’s expensive chain purchase to remember her “soulmate” King Von, but his frequent collaborator Lil Durk also wanted to pick up something to show his respect to his the fallen OTF rapper. Durkio teamed up with Izzy Luxury, a New York-based jeweler that specializes in high-end custom pieces, to get a new diamond pendant with two memory tags for Von.

The double emerald piece features two pictures of Durk and Von together, complete with a 30-pointer tennis chain and all VVS stones. “Not your average jewelry,” said Izzy on Instagram.

In the video posted by the jeweler, Lil Durk shows off the new pick-up, flipping around the tags and revealing the stunning details. It has not been shared how much the chain cost, but it looks like a pretty hefty acquisition that easily could have run him over a hundred thousand dollars.

NBA YoungBoy Is Still The King Of Youtube In Latest Top Artist Chart

Love him or hate him, NBA YoungBoy is one of the most beloved acts in Hip-Hop right now. The unconventional rap upstart has quickly built a cult following and proven himself to be an unstoppable force in the music industry. In 2020 alone, the rapper had two projects peak at number one on the Billboard 200, and he consistently dominated YouTube as one of the platform’s most-streamed artists. With the release of YouTube’s latest Top US Artists Chart, it appears that NBA YoungBoy is once again on top.

As seen in this recent post by DJ Akademiks, NBA YoungBoy earned 43.9 million streams to lead the latest YouTube Top US Artists Chart for the week of February 19 – February 25. Surprisingly, Kevin Gates sits right below his fellow Louisianna rapper with a total of 41.3 million views. Juice WRLD follows at number three with 35.4 million hits while Bad Bunny and Lil Durk round out the rest of the top five, with 32.6 million and 31.6 million, respectively.

In the remaining spots within the top 10 artists, Lil Baby, Pooh Shiesty, Future are also doing huge numbers, with each of the artists boasting streams ranging from 27.2 million to 29.2 million.

Although NBA YoungBoy’s position atop the chart may not come as a surprise to anyone, it’s still an incredible feat considering that the Baton Rouge rapper has maintained the peak position on YouTube’s Top Artist Chart since last year’s chart for the week of December 4-December 11, making him YouTube’s top artist for 12 weeks straight.

Bobby Shmurda Won’t Let Curfew Stop His Grind

Following a six-year prison bid, Bobby Shmurda has wasted little time in bouncing back to reclaim the momentum he may have lost. And with many predicting that he’ll pick up exactly where he left off, the anticipation for Bobby’s inevitable comeback release is at an all-time high. Clearly understanding of that fact, it’s no surprise to see Shmurda once again embracing the grind of a purposeful musician.

With footage recently surfacing of him, Zaytoven, and Mike WiLL Made-It cooking up in the studio, it seems likely that Shmurda is already working on a project of unknown length. And as evidenced by a recent Instagram story from Shmurda’s page, he’s not about to let a curfew impede his workflow. In fact, Shmurda confirmed that the show must go on, sharing a picture of himself putting in work at an endearingly makeshift home studio setup.

“On curfew, still trapping,” he declares, a promising indication that he remains dedicated to staying focused on bouncing back in the rap game. Given his unrelenting pace, not to mention a setup that allows flexibility to record as he so chooses, perhaps we’ll be looking at the first post-prison Bobby Shmurda mixtape sooner than later. And given how many artists will be looking to ride that wave, expect no shortage of high-profile guests when the time does come. Are you excited to hear Shmurda’s comeback manifest?
