J. Cole Had Three Points And Two Assists In His Basketball Africa League Debut

It’s been a busy week for J. Cole, as he dropped his latest album, The Off-Season, to rave reviews last Thursday night and on Sunday, he made his debut in the new Basketball Africa League for Patriots Basketball Club in what turned into an 83-60 win for Cole’s squad in their season opener.

Cole has made clear his desire to make it in the basketball world for some time, and not just as a friend to NBA players and someone who name-checks his superstar friends on albums — although, to be clear, he does that too. Cole wants to prove he’s a real hooper and to show his commitment he tried out for and made the Rwandan squad in the new BAL. His debut was rather unspectacular, but he did get on the board with a putback bucket on a follow in transition for his first professional points.

He finished the game with three points, three rebounds, two assists, and three turnovers, doing the little things and not trying to impose his will too much. While he’s the superstar name on the team and in the league, J. Cole seems to understand and embrace being a role player for the Patriots. He’s happy to play defense, set screens, and try to space the floor for his teammates, while creating and taking opportunities when he can. Brandon Costner, former NC State star and a journeyman who’s played in the G League, China, and elsewhere, led the way for the Patriots with 20 points while Rwandan national Dieudonne Ndizeye added 13 points and six rebounds in the win.

Cole looks like another guy out there, which should be taken as a massive compliment. He doesn’t look wildly out of place with some really, really good basketball players, and for a 36-year-old who’s never played professionally otherwise, it’s a credit to him and the work he’s put in that he’s capable of doing that.

Danny Brown Takes It Back To “The Ends”

Detroit’s having a much-deserved moment in the rap game. Much like how cities like Atlanta and Chicago have created a distinct sound that’s true to their city, D-Town is similarly having a rise. However, its diversity is its strength. While many of the city’s most talented acts have been dominating the club, Detroit is still a hub for quality underground hip-hop which Danny Brown has been highlighting through his Bruiser Brigade imprint.

On Friday, Brown returned with a new compilation album from the label which includes four new songs from the rapper himself. Closing out the project is a new solo offering from Brown titled, “The Ends.” Produced by Playa Haze, Danny Brown’s funky flow and nasally voice details the streets of his city. Brown’s penmanship is sharp on this one, giving us hope that a new project is on the way.

Peep the song below.

Quotable Lyrics
I don’t really wanna do this but you left me with no option
I’mma just eat your food, and leave you left on somewhere starvin’
Why you wanna hit me jack like that, you know you push my button
Line, talkin’ ’bout what it is but in reality, it’s nothin’

Russ Has A Lot To Say About Wealth And Fame On “STATUS”

Back in 2017 and 2018, Russ always seemed to be in a battle with the SoundCloud world. His comments on drug use and the business of hip-hop rubbed people the wrong way, although his fans did not seem to care. Russ can travel across the world and attract thousands of people to his shows, which is a talent that is rare for most artists. He has been able to remain consistent throughout this time and in 2021 he plans on keeping up the momentum.

His latest release is yet another example of that as he came through with the track “STATUS.” In terms of production, this song has that smooth feel that most Russ songs possess. As for the lyrics, Russ raps about the wealth and success he has accumulated over the years and how it affects the way he sees people and their intentions. Overall, it’s a solid effort from the rapper and you can check it out, below.

Quotable Lyrics:

Got a home in Atlanta, I’m ’bout to have two
Better than me? Nah, I’m better than you
Got a text, and it said she about to come through
What it is, what it ain’t, what it does, what it do? True

Yung Miami Asks Nicki Minaj To Unblock Her On IG

It’s never a dull moment on Twitter, especially when it involves the City Girls. Yung Miami and JT have continued their dominance in pop culture and hip-hop in the past year as they continue to ride the success of City On Lock. Many of rap’s leading ladies have offered them praise with the exception of one — Nicki Minaj.

Apparently, Nicki Minaj blocked Yung Miami quite some time ago which the City Girl rapper hopes to be reversed. “Can you unblock me on Instagram @NICKIMINAJ?” Miami wrote on Twitter before following it up with a shrug emoji.

“I’m not obsessed, desperate, none of that fr I just asked her to unblock me I ain’t do shit! Tf,” she added in another tweet.

As fans began debating in the replies, one person brought up the potential reason behind the block. Yung Miami’s allegiance to Cardi B at the height of the Cardi vs. Nicki beef may have ruffled a few feathers. Charlamagne asked Miami whether she’d ever work with Nicki, despite her relationship with Cardi. “I just want to stay away from that question, like, I don’t want to get into that but I am team Cardi. City Girls is Team Cardi,” she said in the interview.

However, the City Girls have also expressed their desire to work with Nicki in the past. A TikTok surfaced comparing her comments on the Breakfast Club to a City Girls Q&A where they said they’d love to work with Nicki Minaj.

Others reminded Miami of her own thoughts regarding being blocked. “I hate when I see somebody and they be like unblock me I didn’t do nothing. It’s like no get your hating ass from by me bitch!!!!” she tweeted back in September 2020. She later retweeted that tweet but fans still went in on her.

“The last few weeks my mental has not been so great,” Cori explained in the address to followers. “At one point I tried to end my life but you & my family really give me a purpose to live & helped me realize life is much more than materialistic things & you gotta just keep pushing through the bullsh*t.”

“THANK YOU,” she finished. She received an outpouring of support at her display of vulnerability from numerous individuals in the comments, reaffirming her sentiments expressed in the post.

Denny Hamlin Turns The Air Jordan 1 Into A Racing Shoe

Michael Jordan’s sneaker line has mostly been known for its contributions to the world of basketball. There have been various incredible silhouettes to come out over the years and one of those models is none other than the Air Jordan 1. We have seen numerous iterations of the model, and now, an auto-racing-inspired model is dropping thanks to NASCAR’s first Jumpman athlete, Denny Hamlin.

The Air Jordan 1 Racer PE has been decked out in white, purple, and orange which fits with Hamlin’s Fed-Ex sponsored car. The shoe has special suede materials that are fire-resistant and keep the driver comfortable while in the cockpit of an extremely hot vehicle.

“Nine times out of ten, if you see me on the street, I’m wearing Air Jordan Is,” Hamlin said on the Jumpman website. “This Air Jordan 1 Racer PE is special for a lot of reasons. Jordan Brand actually built the heat shield into the heel of my shoe, so my feet never get too hot. This is also the first time my racing shoe has the Air Jordan wings logo on it, and of course, there’s the Jumpman logo.”

For now, there are no plans to release colorways of this new silhouette, although if you’re interested in auto-racing, these are an immediate grail.

Retch & V Don Unveil New Single “Shiesty” Ft. Maxo Kream

Retch is behind bars right now due to a probation violation but it seems that he’s already preparing for his arrival back home. The rapper hasn’t allowed his current situation to impede on his career trajectory and in the next few weeks, he’ll be unveiling a brand new project alongside V Con. This week, he released a new single off of the project titled, “Shiesty” ft. Maxo Kream. V Don creates a middle ground between the boom-bap inflections of the East Coast and the muddy 808s of the South — a perfect fit for Maxo and Retch to get busy to.

“Me and Retch flew out to Atlanta to knock out the project,” V Don told Complex. “Once we got to the studio he played me a few songs he recently recorded, including a few he did with Maxo. I heard the verses to one record and told him we’re using this one for our project, and I made the ‘Shiesty’ beat from scratch, and the record turned out crazy!”
