Lena Waithe Launches A New Label, Hillman Grad Records, With Def Jam

Queen & Slim creator Lena Waithe is making the jump from film and TV into music, announcing the creation of a new label with Def Jam, Hillman Grad Records (named for Waithe’s production company, which itself is named for the fictional HBCU in A Different World). Waithe will be joined by Tebs Maqubela and Albert Cooke to “identify and develop underrepresented artists in hopes of priming them for long-term success,” according to a press release. Maquebela previously helped develop Brockhampton, while Cooke worked in Artist Development at Island Def Jam and Artist Relations at SoundCloud.

Waithe detailed the importance of storytelling in music in a statement, saying, “Music and storytelling have always gone hand in hand. And I think that’s because musicians are the storytellers we love the most. They can take complex emotions and simplify it in four minutes, the same artist can sing about the revolution and falling in love. Music is a part of us. It’s so often connected to our fondest and sometimes our darkest memories. Musicians tell our story. At Hillman Grad Productions we believe in identifying and amplifying new talent, and we want to continue to do that in the music industry. Jeff Harleston and his phenomenal team at Def Jam have given us their trust and their resources to help develop artists that not only have potential but staying power. We look forward to the journey ahead.” Interestingly enough, Waithe isn’t the only film talent getting into the music business.

In 2020, Atlantic Records partnered with television and film creator Issa Rae for Raedio, a new record label that has since been the launching pad for a number of successful emerging artists like Pink Sweats, Teamarr, and Yung Baby Tate, as well as the Insecure soundtrack. If this sort of thing really does become a trend, it’ll go a long way toward reversing a dire lack of Black and female executives in the recording industry, bringing new voices to the fore, which we’re all the way here for. D Smoke Pays Homage To ‘Sade’ And Remixes The Snoop Dogg-Featuring ‘Gaspar Yanga’ For Spotify

Just a day after Chika’s Grammy-week Spotify Singles release found her covering Billie Eilish, Chika’s fellow Best New Artist nominee D Smoke drops his own Spotify Singles package, including a remix of his Snoop Dogg-featuring “Gaspar Yanga” and new song “Sade.” “Sade” is an ode to the music of the British singer, but it’s also an homage to the healing power of music overall, as he addresses the hardships of his upbringing in Inglewood, California, and how music helps to ease his mind.

Meanwhile, on the more aggressive “Gaspar Yanga,” D Smoke does a little chest-beating, boasting of his success and strength. The remix is a rarity in 2021, as it’s an actual “remix” of the beat, utilizing a different sample after the original took its leading looping from the Koutev Bulgarian National Ensemble’s 1991 rendition of “Bre, Petrunko.”

D Smoke discussed his Grammy nominations — he’s also up for Best Rap Album — with Ebro Darden on Apple Music, explaining what the nominations meant for him just a year after his breakout in the wake of winning the first season of Netflix’s Rhythm + Flow. “I appreciate that because a lot of people think popularity is the determinant factor,” he said. “A lot of people determine their success by the numbers. When you got artists on their own dime and their own time that make something happen, that’s worth recognizing. It’s artists that stream more than me. It’s artists that have more radio play than me. But if we’re talking about what I put out and the company that I’m amongst, I’m proud to see that list.”

Big U Shuts Down Quando Rondo: “You Can’t Call Me Now”

The mind behind Hip Hop Uncovered, Eugene “Big U” Henley has been running some press to speak about his latest business endeavors. A legendary man in music and one of the most notorious street presences, former Crips leader Big U linked up with Bimmy Antney at The Breakfast Club to touch on the street influence in hip-hop, documenting the culture, and more. When speaking about why young rappers should be connecting more with OGs, Big U touched on Quando Rondo’s specific situation, revealing that the Georgia-based artist reached out to him a few days ago.

Quando Rondo, who reps Crip, has been making all kinds of headlines for the last few months because of his involvement in King Von’s murder. The rapper reportedly got into an altercation with Von in an Atlanta nightclub’s parking lot before shots were fired, leading to Von’s death. While Quando was not charged with any crimes, he is still facing a lot of heat for the situation, and according to Big U, he tried to get the legend’s help in the last week before he was turned down.

Speaking about how young artists often don’t think to connect with OGs when they’re moving around different hoods, Big U said, “They got your number, they know who you is, but they feel like they bigger than the program. You got a lot of dudes that claim my neighborhood that’s in this music sh*t but they don’t really f*ck with us until it’s a problem, and then they call us. Like Quando Rondo. I just showed Envy, like, you can’t call me now. You can’t call me when the fire hot. You didn’t f*ck with me before that. You had my number, you could have called me, you could have did all that. He was around and about but how does that feel to me and how does that feel to our team?”

Lil Durk & OTF’s First-Week Sales Projections For “Loyal Bros” Revealed

Lil Durk and OTF’s compilation album Loyal Bros has been described as Chicago drill’s response to J. Cole and Dreamville’s Revenge Of The Dreamers 3 by some critics because of the number of artists involved in the creation of the project. The new release, which features solo songs from Lil Durk, collaborations with other Only The Family members Booka600, Memo600, Timo, Doodie Lo, and the late King Von, as well as outside sources like Tee Grizzley and Lil Uzi Vert, was released last week and it’s looking set to have a pretty solid first-week numbers-wise.

While the songs charts will likely be dominated by Drake’s Scary Hours 2 songs, which are on pace to debut at #1, #2, and #3, the albums chart is set to include a couple of new entries in the Top 10, including Only The Family’s Loyal Bros, which will likely slide into the #10 position.

According to Hits Daily Double, the new album is projected to move approximately 27,500 copies, with 700 of those coming from pure sales. Those numbers are not final, but it would mean a likely spot between #8 and #11 for the Chicago squad.

Country singer Morgan Wallen will remain at the top of the chart for a ninth week, while The Weeknd’s The Highlights will score another week at #2. Pop Smoke, Pooh Shiesty, and Lil Durk’s solo album The Voice follow up to close out the projected Top 5 next week.

NBA Youngboy Allegedly No-Shows J. Cole At The Studio

Youngboy Never Broke Again is one of the hottest rappers in the world, taking over YouTube and dominating their music rankings. For over the last two years, the Baton Rouge native has been standing tall at the top of multiple most-viewed lists, often prioritizing content on the video-sharing platform. He’s notched some impressive collaborations in recent times, including with Nicki Minaj, Juice WRLD, Migos, and more, but he seemingly missed out on what could have been one of his biggest link-up to date.

According to DJ Akademiks, the superstar rapper was supposed to attend a studio session with J. Cole, but he ended up leaving the North Carolina native waiting for eight hours before failing to show up

“J. Cole waited in the studio for eight hours for Youngboy to show up,” said DJ Akademiks during a recent stream. “Youngboy didn’t show up. “Facts. These are facts! Your favorite rapper, n***a. J. Cole? He sat in the studio for eight hours for a session with Youngboy. Youngboy never showed up.”

The hip-hop media personality clarified that YB was not feeling well that day, adding, “Let me be fair to Youngboy. No disrespect to J. Cole, J. Cole’s just a rapper. Youngboy be going through sh*t. He’s living life, he’s going through sh*t. Youngboy said, ‘yo, my energy is not fit to be in the studio with that guy.’ It wasn’t about J. Cole. It was just that he, and personally what he was going through, wasn’t fit to be in that environment.”

Ak says that YB isn’t necessarily the most courteous person in the world and he never gave Cole the heads up that he would skip the session.

DJ Akademiks has had a great track record as of late, becoming one of the go-to sources for news about Drake’s upcoming album rollout for Certified Lover Boy. He also has a good relationship with Youngboy Never Broke Again, so it’s possible that he’s telling the truth again on this.

6ix9ine Sued For Copyright Infringment On “GOOBA”: Report

Perhaps more so than his music, Tekashi 6ix9ine is known for his neverending antics. In the past week alone, he has cruelly mocked people who have passed away, including Nipsey Hussle, King Von, and Pooh Shiesty’s recently deceased brother. Yet despite his morally questionable antics and his inexpungible label as a snitch, 6ix9ine has enjoyed plenty of commercial success.

After recently bragging about all the money that he had made upon his release from prison in 2020, Tekashi’s wallet actually may be in for a major deduction. TMZ reports that BEATDEMONS, a TX-based producer group, has decided to sue 6ix9ine for copyright infringement, claiming “GOOBA” is a rip-off of the group’s song, “Regular.”

Having released the “6ix9ine x Cardi B Type Beat” back in January 2018 and garnered over 150,000 views, BEATDEMONS allegedly attests that “GOOBA” steals the melody, form, structure, and function of their publicly accessible beat. As a result of the alleged copyright infringement, BEATDEMONS is reportedly seeking profits from “GOOBA,” which has amassed nearly 700 million views and peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100.

Considering that 6ix9ine has also recently been accused of not properly paying his attorneys, the Tattle Tales rapper may not be fully prepared for this new legal dispute.

Take a listen to both BEATDEMONS’s 6ix9ine and Cardi B-inspired beat “Regular” and 6ix9ine’s “GOOBA” below and let us know if you think that BEATDEMONS has a case for claiming that the infamous New York artist stole their beat.

Johnny Depp Investigates Biggie’s Murder In “City Of Lies” Trailer

Johnny Depp has been having a rough go lately, having been embroiled in a public divorce and legal battle with Amber Heard. With allegations of domestic abuse on both sides, it seems as if Depp has taken the brunt of the damage, having been dismissed from his roles in both the Pirates Of The Caribbean and Fantastic Beasts franchises.

While things haven’t exactly been looking up for Depp, the first trailer from his long-delayed City Of Lies was officially released, providing a thorough look at the upcoming true-crime flick. Co-starring Forrest Whitaker, City Of Lies follows LAPD detective Russell Poole and journalist Jack Jackson on their search to solve the murder of rap legend Christopher Wallace — aka The Notorious B.I.G.

From the look of it, the mid-nineties hip-hop landscape will play a prominent role in the film, highlighting a news report speculating that Biggie’s murder was retaliation for the death of 2Pac Shakur. It would appear that such theories will be touched upon, as Forest Whitaker’s character flatly denies the possibility that Biggie had Pac killed. “It’s a riddle,” speculates Depp’s character, and given that the murder currently remains unsolved, the riddle has yet to be solved. It should be interesting to see how City Of Lies tackles the unresolved nature of Biggie’s death — look for further clarification when the film hits theaters on March 19th.

In the meantime, check out the trailer below, released one day after the twenty-fourth anniversary of The Notorious B.I.G’s tragic death.

Pink Sweats And Kehlani Give A Harmonious Performance Of ‘At My Worst’ On ‘The Tonight Show’

Pink Sweats and Kehlani’s performance on their Pink Planet duet “At My Worst” is already gently harmonious, but the duo kicked it up a notch on The Tonight Show with a gorgeous visual component that perfectly accented the duality of the soul-stirring ballad.

Performing in a room split down the middle, each artist’s side is the perfect complement to the other’s. On Pink Sweats’ side, he wears his customary color, which contrasts nicely with the canary yellow decor. He’s backed by a female guitarist, while on the other side, Kehlani wears a yellow dress in a pink room, backed by a male guitarist. The yin-and-yang effect mirrors the complementary quality of their voices as they sing both to each other and to their respective loves (Pink Sweats recently proposed to his longtime girlfriend JL Bunny, who is a performer in her own right).

Sweats is fresh off the release of his debut album Pink Planet, which dropped last month backed by the loving single “Heaven.” Meanwhile, Kehlani has been leading the R&B resurgence with a slew of features in 2020 supporting her musical peers and her last album, It Was Good Until It Wasn’t.
