Things have certainly changed over the years. Jim Jones once declined to sign Drake but now, he’s claiming the Canadian child star is hip-hop’s GOAT. During a recent interview on The RapCaviar podcast, the Dipset member was asked about his recent statements about the rapper. Some might be surprised but Jones said Drake boasts a catalog that really speaks for itself. “I mean, why not?” he asked rhetorically. “Drake is the only person that gets played on any place in this earth and they gonna know it in English.”
Bootleg Kev said that Drizzy certainly stands among the top but not necessarily at #1. He explained that Drake is second to Jay-Z, which Jones refuted. “He has broke every single statistic, period,” Jones said. “Like, seriously. Jay-Z has done some shit for hip-hop that will never, ever be duplicated. He is HOV, and he meant that shit.” Calling Jay-Z the #1 rapper of all time is truly as safe as a rap take can get. Still, Jones feels as though the Brooklyn legend built a legacy that means much more than music.
Jim Jones Puts Drake Above Jay-Z
When Bootleg Kev tried to make everyone agree that Jay-Z is still the greatest of all time, Jones pushed back even further. “I can’t agree on that,” he said. “[Jay is] at the top of the barrel when it comes to what he’s done. He’s a billionaire, he has done some shit for dope boys that people never even thought could be. He’s put himself in rooms that you couldn’t imagine.”
“I haven’t heard too much Jay-Z music in the last six to seven years that was really hitting out here in these streets on the lit side of things,” Jones continued. “In the past 12 years everything that Drake has put out has hit like 2Pac was hitting. No matter if you like it, no matter if n****s don’t like it cause he’s light-skinned, no matter if n****s don’t like it cause he’s singing, no matter what n****s like, he always seems to be in these n****s’ playlists.”
Jones said Jay and Drake are in “the same category as far as them being the GOATs of this shit.” However, he doesn’t feel like Drake necessarily requires the same amount of social or political commentary to reach that level of greatness as Jay’s done in the past. “So rappers have to give their opinion on social views to make them the No. 1 rapper?” Check the clip above.
