Tupac’s story has been explored in various facets. Of course, much of his music was auto-biographical but he never penned an autobiography himself. Instead, we’ve trusted authors and filmmakers to take the information of his life available and transform it into a masterpiece, whether in the form of books or film. However, FX’s Dear Mama documentary is without a doubt an incredible glimpse into the relationship between 2Pac and his mother, Afeni Shakur. According to Chance The Rapper, it could take the cake for the best documentary he’s seen.
The Chicago-born rapper took to Twitter to share his thoughts on the documentary and it came with high praise. “Did y’all watch the Tupac & Afeni Shakur documentary series yet?” he wrote on Twitter. “What’s y’all honest thoughts? Cause I would say without exaggeration or hyperbole it’s probably the best documentary I’ve ever seen.” Like many fans of ‘Pac around the world, Chance The Rapper undoubtedly appreciates the in-depth look into the late rapper’s relationship with his mother and how it inevitably influenced his outlook of the world.
FX’s “Dear Mama” Docuseries Gains Praise
Chance certainly isn’t the only person who fell in love with the five-part docuseries on Tupac and Afeni Shakur. The show’s gained plenty of praise since the first episode dropped. Rotten Tomatoes revealed that the show had a 100% rating on their website. Ahead of the show’s debut, 2Pac’s manager, Leila Steinberg, described Dear Mama as “incredible.” “Part of [Alan] wanting to really do this piece was about healing, was about honesty, was about all of us looking at what happened. And, so I’m just saying this to say, he’s done an incredible piece,” Steinberg said.
Nick Grad, president of FX Entertainment, explained the importance of the show. Describing the show as a “definitive piece,” he detailed how Allen’s point-of-view helped take a deeper look into ‘Pac’s upbringing. “Allen’s examination of Tupac viewed through the prism of his mother Afeni is a fascinating take that really gets beneath the education and experience that shaped his life and inspired him to become one of the greatest artists ever,” he said.
