Zoe Saldaña States Gender Equality Fight in Hollywood Is ‘On Us’ And Inspires Women to Open Doors for Other Women

Zoe Saldaña States Gender Equality Fight in Hollywood Is ‘On Us’ And Inspires Women to Open Doors for Other Women

Recently, Zoe Saldaña emphasized the importance of women breaking barriers in the film industry and warned against complacency once they achieve success. Speaking at Kering’s Women in Motion program at the Cannes Film Festival, the “Avatar” star stressed the need for more women in leadership positions. “We need more female CEOs. We need more women sitting on boards. Because those are the gatekeepers,” she said. “Once those women are there, don’t just be happy and feel so lucky that you’re the only woman sitting at the table. Get three men to get up.”

As reported by Variety, Saldaña was reflective on her robust career, from her role in James Cameron’s “Avatar,” the highest grossing film of all time, to her recent performance in Jacques Audiard’s crime drama “Emilia Pérez.” She described her journey from a young girl from Queens, NY to a successful actress and spoke about her ongoing desire for artistic growth. “I opened every door that felt unlocked to me, walked in. But then here I am, like 10 years later, reaping the benefits over and over again of films that were so successful that became franchises, and it’s time-consuming. So it’s not that I don’t appreciate it. It’s just that I still want to grow as an artist.”

In a conversation with Variety’s Angelique Jackson, Saldaña discussed her struggles with anxiety and self-sabotage, noting, “I’m never satisfied. I’m really really hard on myself. Sometimes I can get in my own way.” She shared an example of overcoming her fears when accepting a role in Taylor Sheridan’s “Special Ops: Lioness.” “You have to follow good material wherever good material is. But it’s my fear because I know that [Sheridan] has big monologues with his characters. I’m dyslexic. Spanish is my first language. I saw ‘Sicario’ and ‘Hell or High Water.’ Like, I love his work. So, I couldn’t pass.”

Saldaña was present at the Cannes Film Festival in France for the premiere of the Spanish-language musical “Emilia Pérez,” which received a nine-minute standing ovation. Reflecting on the film’s reception, she said, “To be here and you guys receiving it and people being deeply moved, I’m speechless. I just don’t know what to say because I just I love art so much, and when cinema is that fucking special and that fresh, it just moves you.”

While Saldaña has starred in major big-budget franchises like Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Star Trek,” she credits “Avatar” with transforming her career. “I went from being in small productions to being this princess from this foreign planet that reached the whole world. I was able to get meetings with producers and directors that I had never known, that I never thought I could ever meet. I was being offered roles I always thought I needed to fight for.”

Saldaña rose by calling on men to support gender equality in the industry. “When women are in there, make more room for other women. That’s important. It’s on us to do it,” she said. “And for the men who are doing it right and making room for women, thank you. You’re so sexy!”

Zoe Saldana Says Disney Should Find a Way to Bring Back ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’

Zoe Saldana Says Disney Should Find a Way to Bring Back 'Guardians of the Galaxy'

The Marvel Cinematic Universe seems like it’s done with Guardians of the Galaxy, especially since helmer James Gunn is running the show for DC’s films at Legendary and Warner Bros. But Zoe Saldaña was recently asked on the Playlists’s Discourse Podcast if she was “done” playing Gamora after the trilogy ended.

“I mean, so far, I think that she is [gone for good] for me, but I don’t think Gamora has gone for good,” Saldaña said in response. In addition to losing Gunn to DC, even Dave Bautista, who played Drax the Destroyer, said Guardians Vol. 3 was the last movie in that world. Saldaña suggested she’s not interested in reprising her role as Gamora, at least for now the character is still there and that means there are other stories to be told within the Marvel Cinematic Universe along with the new-ish multiverse.

“I would think it would be a huge loss for Marvel if they didn’t find a way to bring back the Guardians of the Galaxy,” Saldaña said. “It’s just such a fan-favorite group of misfits, you know? And then at the helm, they had a voice like James Gunn’s writing — which is just so marvelous for and very specific for this genre. And it’s so great for this genre as well. So, I would be the first one in the first row to sort of celebrate when the Guardians of the Galaxy come back.”

Saldaña played Gamora in three highly successful unless you were under a rock. Guardians films, not to mention other Marvel movies, including Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Gunn ended “Vol. 3” with the creation of a new Guardians team that included the likes of Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper), Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel), Kraglin (Sean Gunn), Cosmo (voiced by Maria Bakalova) and Adam Warlock (Will Poulter).

Even though Gunn left the story open-ended, Marvel has yet to announce any new Guardians films.

Fingers crossed for Guardians of the Galaxy, with or without Saldaña, but at least she’s down for the story to continue one way or another.

The 2002 Britney Spears Movie ‘Crossroads’ (Which Has A Much Wilder Cast Than You Remember) Is Heading Back To Theaters

Long before Shonda Rhimes was out here creating her own empire with Grey’s Anatomy and its adjacent properties, she penned a movie for a world-renowned pop star back before Shondaland was even on the map. Crossroads was Britney Spears‘ first (and only) starring role, and it became a teen road trip with the most random cast and musical numbers to ever exist.

The movie starred Spears as Lucy, a small-town girl, and her best friends, played by Taryn Manning and then-unknown Zoe Saldana who go on a road trip right before graduating from high school. They laugh, they cry, and they hang out with a suspected murderer. It’s all about the journey, right? Well, if you didn’t get a chance to check it out in theaters over 20 years ago, now is the time! This way, you’ll be able to really appreciate the stacked cast, which also includes Justin Long as a love interest(!), as well as Kim Cattrall (!), and Dan Aykroyd (!) as Britney’s parents (?!?!). It also sounds like a great Sex and the City episode concept.

Crossroads will get a limited release this October in order to tie in with Spears’ upcoming memoir The Woman In Me. The movie will be shown at 875 locations across the country and will include a bonus sing-along of two Spears songs for your own little movie theater concert. Those are huge these days! The movie will hit theaters on October 23rd and 25th… so you can do an Eras Tour/Crossroads event if you choose to do so.

“Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3” Trailer Revealed: Watch

In the sea of highly-anticipated film trailers that aired during the Super Bowl, Marvel released the trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The first Guardians of the Galaxy movie since 2017 will reunite the Guardians with Gamora, played by Zoe Saldaña. The Super Bowl trailer showed audiences that Gamora will return, despite the fact that she was killed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. A new Gamora returned in Avengers: Endgame, but she had no memory of Star-Lord. Now, Peter Quill must get her memories back while the Guardians fight one last mission against Chukwudi Iwuji’s villain, the High Evolutionary.

Marvel revealed the first official trailer to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in December 2022. The initial trailer showed the Guardians teaming up for a mission “one last time,” as Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) tells Star-Lord. Returning cast members include Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Saldaña as Gamora, and Cooper as Rocket. With them, Dave Bautista will return as Drax the Destroyer. Vin Diesel will return as Groot, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Karen Gillian as Nebula, Sean Gunn as Kraglin, Sylvester Stallone as Stakar Ogord, and Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha. There will also be newcomers to the franchise, including Will Poulter as Adam Warlock, Iwuji as the High Evolutionary, and Maria Bakalova as Cosmo the Spacedog. Bakalova’s character was introduced in the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.

“Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3” Trailer

James Gunn directed all three films in the Guardians of the Galaxy series. He was recently chosen to lead DC Studios for Warner Brothers Discovery in October. While starting his new position as co-chairman and CEO, Gunn is seeing the Guardians of the Galaxy saga through. He is overseeing post-production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. He confirmed to fans at 2022’s San Diego Comic Con that this is the final film for the fan-favorite crew of superheroes. He said, “This is the end of that story. I’m sorry. Some stories have an end. It doesn’t mean everybody dies.”

Bautista visited The Tonight Show on January 31. He announced to fans that the upcoming third Guardians of the Galaxy movie would definitely be his last performance as Drax the Destroyer. He said, “With Drax, I just got to end the perfect way. And I would never sign up for another job as Drax just to get a paycheck. I would tarnish that [perfect ending], and I won’t do it.” Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will release in theaters on May 5.
