Beyonce Will Be The Focus Of A New Class At Yale

Beyonce will be the focus of a new class at Yale University taught by professor Daphne Brooks. Brooks recently spoke about the offering during an interview with the school’s Daily News, revealing it will “examine Beyoncé’s artistic work from 2013 to 2024 as a lens to study Black history, intellectual thought and performance.” The title of the course is: “Beyonce Makes History: Black Radical Tradition History, Culture, Theory & Politics Through Music.”

“[This class] seemed good to teach because [Beyoncé] is just so ripe for teaching at this moment in time,” she told the outlet. “The number of breakthroughs and innovations she’s executed and the way she’s interwoven history and politics and really granular engagements with Black cultural life into her performance aesthetics and her utilization of her voice as a portal to think about history and politics — there’s just no one like her.” Brooks previously taught a class on Beyonce at Princeton University, but that course focused on her cultural impact.

Beyonce isn’t the first singer to become the focus of a university course. In recent years Kendrick Lamar and his album, good kid, m.A.A.d city, were the subject of a class at Georgia Regents University a few years ago, while other colleges have hosted courses on JAY-Z, Bruce Springsteen, Drake, The Weeknd, and 2Pac, among other artists.

The Yale course comes just months after the release of Beyonce’s eighth studio album, Cowboy Carter, on which she ventured into country music. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, with 407,000 album-equivalent units. It’s the second project in a trilogy, following 2022’s Renaissance. Details on her third project in the group have yet to be announced. Be on the lookout for further updates on Beyonce on HotNewHipHop.

Lupe Fiasco Brings It Back To His Childhood Home On “Channel No3”

Lupe Fiasco fans have been eating in recent times. Although there was a point in the past decade when he threatened to retire, these past few years have seen Lupe deliver some quality music. In 2022, he dropped off his latest body of work, Drill Music In Zion, a 10-song body of work that he referred to as his Illmatic. However, he’s remained active with a slew of singles and guest features including a verse on Aesop Rock and Blockhead’s “Pumpkin Seeds.”

Fortunately, he’s keeping his foot on the gas. In April, he released “SentRock” and followed up with “Checkin’” shortly after. Then, he came through with “Outside” a week later. It appears that he still has more heat in the arsenal, indicating that Lupe still has more music ready to unload on his fans. This morning, he came through with his latest offering, “Channel No 3.” The self-produced single brings a warm sense of nostalgia as he reflects on his love for video games.

Lupe Fiasco Named Fellow At Yale University

Lupe Fiasco is no stranger to academic honors. Last May, he was honored as an MLK Visiting Professor at MIT. Today, Lu was named a Saybrook Fellow at Yale University. This marks yet another position of prestige at one of the top schools in the world. The announcement of his new position came straight from the Saybrook Dean’s Twitter. “Prof. @LupeFiasco welcome to the Saybrook family!” he tweeted. Lu responded directly to the tweet to say how honored he was by the announcement. What this new position will entail in the day-to-day for the professor and rapper is unknown. Still, the announcement alone speaks volumes about Lu’s intellectual acumen.

Lupe Fiasco is a Chicago-born rapper, songwriter, and record producer. His debut album, Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor featured his socially conscious lyrics and creative production technique. It propelled him to fame in the mid-2000s. Frequently, Lu’s music explores political issues, social justice, and personal conflict. He is known by many for his razor-sharp lyricism and complicated rhyme schemes. Throughout his career, he has continued to release critically acclaimed albums. He also makes a habit of collaborating with a wide range of artists from different genres. He has had a long and storied tenure. His academic positions serve as further proof of his mastery of rap as an art form.

Learning With Lu

Last year, Lu took to Twitter to announce his MIT course. Anyone who has followed his career should not be surprised by his intellectual endeavors. Still, teaching a course at MIT is nothing to scoff at. About the announcement, Lu tweeted, “I been holding this for a while. I’ll put together something more sophisticated later that really captures the nuance and gravity but for now I’ll just say it straight and raw: I’m going to teach Rap at MIT.”

Last December, Professor Lu did just that. The rapper taught his first course at MIT, entitled “Rap, Theory, & Practice: An Introduction”. The class is an investigation of the basic purposes, structures, and principles of rap. Surprisingly, and to the delight of many up-and-coming artists, the class was made available to everyone via Youtube. This allows those who would not otherwise have access to his teachings a way to learn from the master himself. It is yet another philanthropic move from Lu that proves he is for the people, no matter how many prestigious titles he is given.
